The Land Before Time: Chester girl, 11, cast in remake of classic

BBC News07-04-2025

An 11-year-old girl from Chester has been cast in the lead role of a remake of the 1980s classic, The Land Before Time.Summer-Joules Saunders will play the character Littlefoot in the reboot of Steven Spielberg's 1988 animated film series.Saunders was given the role after a successful second audition, in which she put pencils in her mouth to sound like she was "eating like a dinosaur".The new movie, Littlefoot, will be directed by British filmmaker Joey Lever, who is best known for creating fan film, Spiderman: Lost Cause in 2014.
Speaking about the audition process, Saunders said: "There weren't many actors in [the studio] because the actor I was with was from America, on a little computer."For some parts I had to put pencils in my mouth because I'd be eating like a dinosaur and there was lots of moving around."
Summer-Joules is the daughter of talent agent Joanne Saunders, who founded the Chester-based Majestic Academy of Performing Arts."I grew up in this and as I grew up with my mum's talent agency so I joined that.", Summer-Joules told BBC Radio Merseyside."When I'm older I still want to be an actress and a performer, but also a barrister."I'd like to use my acting to be a barrister because it's like you're on a stage and having to push your case to the judges."Her mum added: "I'm really, really proud. I just open doors and let [Summer-Joules] decide whether she wants to keep them open."This kind of environment helps raise confidence and self-esteem, all issues children are going though at the moment."

Queen Camilla has leading role in her favourite author's latest murder mystery

Both Queen Camilla and King Charles are featured in the new royal whodunnit, written by Peter James, whom Her Majesty has openly named as her favourite crime author Queen Camilla is to star in her favourite author's latest murder mystery - and has even helped with the plot. Her Majesty, 77, has a central role in The Hawk Is Dead: A Killer In The Palace, which sees a detective investigate a murder at Buckingham Palace. Camilla has openly named the author, Peter James, as her top crime writer and forged a friendship with him in the past 10 years. ‌ It is said Camilla is "thrilled" to have a leading role in the book, due for release in October, written some time after the Queen Consort had suggested her friend set his legendary Brighton-based detective's latest case in London. His books have been made into an ITV drama series Grace, staring John Simm as the eponymous detective superintendent. ‌ "Fortunately, no one is likely to be more thrilled to find themselves taking a leading role in their own royal whodunnit than Her Majesty," writes Daily Mail's royal editor, Rebecca English, in today's publication. King Charles also features in the book, which tells the tale of a detective exploring what they believe to be a assassination attempt at Buckingham Palace. Publishers Pan Macmillan said: "Opening with a cinematic derailment of the Royal Train, The Hawk Is Dead takes Roy Grace deep into the heart of Buckingham Palace, where he is called upon to solve a murder and what looks to be a royal assassination attempt." "Queen Camilla, a well-known book lover and reading champion through her charity The Queen's Reading Room, has always been one of the first people to receive each Grace novel and is excited to have a starring role, alongside King Charles, in Peter's latest thriller." Her Majesty has already had a sneak peakat the novel, it is understood. Peter, 76 and who has several Sunday Times No 1 bestsellers to his name, was "moved to tears" by Camilla's recent nomination of Grace as her favourite detective. Speaking in a recent interview, Peter, who was raised in East Sussex, said: "I came up with an idea, which I ran by Her Majesty and she loved it. Throughout writing, during which I've done extensive behind-the-scenes research at the Palace, I have received invaluable insights from the Royal Household, including Her Majesty." The pair have developed a firm but unlikely friendship and, in 2021, Her Majesty visited the set of Grace, the fifth series of which has just aired on ITV. A sixth series of the drama is already in production. Insiders told the Daily Mail "any resemblance to persons living or dead is purely coincidental" when asked about Peter's new book. Buckingham Palace declined to comment to the publication.

National Lottery funding blow for Edinburgh Filmhouse revamp

However the planned refurbishment will not be complete when the doors of the Filmhouse reopen for the first time in almost three years later this month. Read more: A new fourth screen cinema is not due to open until later in the summer, when the new-look Filmhouse is expected to host Edinburgh International Film Festival screenings. It is understood around £100,000 is still needed for other key elements of the project, to ensure the new-look Filmhouse is as accessible and energy efficient as possible. The bid to the National Lottery Heritage Fund was also intended to help for improvements to the façade of the former church building, which is part of Edinburgh's city centre culture quarter, along with the Usher Hall, and the Lyceum and Traverse theatres. The Filmhouse cinema in Edinburgh is due to reopen by the end of this month. (Image: Rod White) However it was turned down a bid for up to £250,000 in April – months after multi-million pound pledges were made over two other major cultural projects in the city. Up to £5 million has been pledged for plans to turn the former Royal High School on Calton Hill into a new National Centre for Music, while a further £4.5m has been pledged towards efforts to reopen the Leith Theatre building on a permanent basis for the first time in more than 40 years. New seating has been installed in the Filmhouse cinema ahead of its reopening. (Image: Alastair McCrum) The UK Government, the Scottish Government agency Screen Scotland and Edinburgh City Council have all supported the rescue bid for the Filmhouse, which had been running for more than 40 years until its operating company went into administration in October 2022. The Filmhouse and the Edinburgh International Film Festival, which were both run by the Centre for Moving Image, were forced to cease trading with immediate effect. The Filmhouse crowdfunder, which has raised more than £325,000 to date, has been backed by stars including the Jack Lowden, Brian Cox, Alan Cumming, Emma Thompson, Dougray Scott, Kate Dickie and Timothy Spall. The rescue of the cinema has been led by a group of former staff who led an unsuccessful bid to buy the building, but managed to persuade Caledonian Heritable, the Edinburgh-based bar and restaurant operator, to agree to negotiations over a potential lease agreement after it snapped up the building for £2.65m. Their new charity, Filmhouse (Edinburgh) Ltd, would go on to secure a 25-year lease, and £1.5m in crucial funding from the UK Government to pay for a refurbishment which was seen as critical to the future success of the reopened cinema. New seating has been installed in the Filmhouse's three long-running screenings rooms, which will have a lower capacity but with more leg room and more comfortable seats, the much-loved café-bar has been refurbished and expanded, and the cinema will have a revamped foyer. However the Filmhouse website states: 'We have the funds to reopen Filmhousem but the more we have the better it will be, so our crowdfunder remains open.' The crowdfunding page adds: 'The crowdfunder has been a huge success and has enabled Filmhouse to look forward to welcoming you back very soon. 'We are still fundraising to make sure we have enough to cover all the costs incurred as we ramp up the new Filmhouse organisation – and for key improvements such as accessibility and minimising environmental impact. 'Any funds we can raise here will make a real difference to the future of Filmhouse.' Former Filmhouse and film festival chief executive Ginnie Atkinson, one of the four former staff members behind the rescue bid, said: 'Of course we were disappointed not to receive anything from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, but we know that is a very competitive environment. "We do have the funding in place to create the fourth screen at the back of the Filmhouse. "However I would say that we still need to raise around £100,000 for the important work that we still want to do." Caroline Clark, National Lottery Heritage Fund director for Scotland, said: 'I can confirm that we did not award support to a recent project funding application relating to the Filmhouse. "We know this is very disappointing news. Unfortunately, we have a high level of competition for grants at every stage of the grant application process and we are unable to support all the applications we receive.'

She died last year at the age of 88, leaving behind three children, who will now inherit her fortune. ‌ In a statement at the time of her death, their son wrote at the time: "Lady Helen Wogan - 1936-2024. Our beautiful Mum left us last night after a fantastic life. From a young Irish rose to Lady Wogan , she was the epitome of style and grace. ‌ "A Mother, Grandmother and Wife, with love and kindness at her core. A strength and a belief that saw her through many of life's trials. A sense of humour and a turn of phrase that would have you in fits of laughter. "A proper lady in every sense of the word. Her and Dad are hopefully sharing a vodka martini and hoping we don't make too much of fuss. We love you Mum, now and forever." Terry passed away just a few months after his final show on Radio 2, where he announced he had prostate cancer. He pulled out of Children In Need later that month due to health reasons.
