'It's not a race,' stressed Green. 'I know that personally, and even going back to junior (Portland, WHL), I went there to learn to coach. It's much like making the NHL as a player. It take years of working on your craft. Same thing as coaching. Manny was a great hire by the Canucks.

Victoria native Spencer Carbery, 43, turned his second season running the Washington Capitals bench in 2024-25 into the Jack Adams Award. He was a unanimous winner as the league's top head coach over runner-up Scott Arniel of the Winnipeg Jets. Green finished sixth.

Carbery's acknowledgement came after doing predatory work as a Leafs assistant for two seasons and earlier running an AHL bench with the Hershey Bears for three seasons.

The Capitals went 51-22-9 this season, improved by 20 points, and won a Stanley Cup playoff series for the first time since 2018. They finished second in goals per game (3.49) in the regular season after being ranked 28th last season (2.63). They were also tied for eighth in goals against per game (2.79) after tied for 16th in 2023-24 (3.07).
Washington was fifth on the penalty kill (82.0 per cent), first in comeback wins (25), and tied for first in road points (53).

Hellebuyck captures Hart Trophy, third Vezina Trophy
This is one daily double Connor Hellebuyck won't soon forget. The Winnipeg Jets goalie was awarded the first Hart Trophy of his career on Thursday night to go along with his third Vezina Trophy. Hellebuyck became just the eighth goalie in NHL history to capture the Hart Trophy, given to the individual deemed to be the most valuable player on his team, as voted on by members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. Hellebuyck, who led the NHL in wins, shutouts and goals-against average this season, also captured his second consecutive nod as the best goalie in the NHL, as voted on by NHL general managers. Hellebuyck, who became the 13th goalie in NHL history to win the Vezina Trophy three times, also won the award in 2018-19. Andrei Vasilevskiy of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Darcy Kuemper of the Los Angeles Kings were the two other finalists for the Vezina Trophy.

Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck is the first Winnipeg Jets player to ever win the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player to his team. Hellebuyck pulled off the rare double, winning both the Hart and Vezina trophies as the league's top goaltender on Thursday. Hellebuyck is just the eighth goalie and the first since Carey Price in 2015 to win the MVP award and only four other goalies have won both in the same season. It's the second straight year he's won the best goalie honour and it's the third Vezina of his career, also winning in 2020. With 81 of the 191 first-place votes for 1,346 points, Hellebuyck edged Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl for the Hart. Draisaitl finished with 53 first-place votes for 1,209 points. 'You just watch forwards and D-men just rack them up all through the years and you kinda just get into your own world, the goaltending world. So when the Hart kinda drifts towards the goalie, you take notice and it makes you really feel like you did something special.' The 32-year-old backstopped the Jets to the Presidents' Trophy (best record) and the William Jennings Trophy (fewest goals allowed by team), and led the NHL in wins and goals against average among usual starters in the regular season. Typically the NHL presents their awards during a one-night awards show, but this year they handed them out individually. And Hellebuyck found out he won both when they surprised him after doing some fishing. 'It wasn't the most traditional way of doing things,' he said. 'I kinda came off the water and saw it all and really had no idea. Everyone around me did a great job of keeping it a surprise and I was just shocked. The whole morning I was just kinda jaw-dropped shocked cause the way it went down, it was just a really cool experience.' Draisaitl and Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov were the other Hart Trophy finalists. Tampa Bay's Andrei Vasilevskiy and Darcy Kuemper of the Los Angeles Kings were also nominated for the Vezina Trophy.
