More Menopause Symptoms May Predict This 1 Change To Your Memory Later In Life

On average, menopause causes about 10 symptoms in those who experience it.
But 90% of us weren't taught about the life stage in school, and less than half of us know how to manage its most common symptoms.
Tinnitus, lowered alcohol tolerance, and even vaginal 'electric shocks' are all lesser-known menopause side-effects.
Some recent research published in the medical journal PLOS One suggests that how strongly you feel menopause symptoms, and how many you have, might also reveal how at-risk you are for memory issues over time, too.
The study used health data from 896 participants, whose average age was 64.2 years old. They had started the menopause at a mean age of just under 50 years old.
The data came from an ongoing Canadian CAN-PROTECT study and researchers looked at how many symptoms participants reported they'd had during menopause.
Then, they tested the cognitive ability of the now mostly postmenopausal women.
They found that women who had reported more menopause symptoms had worse memory and cognitive ability as well as increased impulsivity, difficulties in social interactions, and apathy.
All of these have been linked to a higher risk of developing dementia.
This study didn't seek to explain why that link might exist. It only shared the association.
No. This study only found a link, not a cause; that correlation was between memory loss, mild cognitive impairment, and mild behavioural impairment.
As Alzheimer's Research UK's director of research Dr Sheona Scales shared: 'Although the results of this study suggest that people experiencing more menopause symptoms report having worse memory and behaviour changes in later life, this doesn't mean that they went on to develop dementia.
'Dementia is caused by diseases in the brain, and while some studies suggest menopause could play a role in our brain health, we need more research to understand if and how this influences whether someone will develop dementia.'
However, the director of research added that seeing as two-thirds of people living with dementia in the UK are women, it's crucial to get good data on why that might be.

The S-100 data model is a new global standard created by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), which offers a new way of visualizing the marine environment using layered, interactive digital data that can be added to navigational charts. Unlike traditional paper or electronic charts, the new standard integrates real-time information – like depths, landmarks, tides, and currents into a single, dynamic format. Until November 2025, Canada is offering S-100 digital navigation products and services free of charge to mariners, stakeholders, developers and other interested parties to test performance in real-life scenarios. The complex conditions of the St. Lawrence River, such as varying water depths, changing currents and navigational aids, position it as an ideal testing ground, and will provide invaluable insights for S-100's future adoption across global waters. Canada's leadership in hosting the S-100 Sea Trials will advance the global transition toward consistent and reliable digital hydrographic standards. The S-100 Universal Hydrographic Data Model (S-100) is a universal set of guidelines and definitions for designing and maintaining hydrographic geospatial products and services. It is the new international standard developed by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) to ensure consistency in maritime products and services. The Canada Hydrographic Service is contributing several important navigational products and services within the IHO suite of products to help modernize navigation in Canadian waters. The IHO has planned a phased rollout of the S-100 navigational information starting in January 2026. Indian companies Manipal Health Enterprises and Fortis Healthcare are in discussions with international financial institutions to secure financing to support their acquisition efforts, as the bidding deadline of 22 June for the multispeciality hospital chain Sahyadri Hospitals approaches. The lenders include DBS Group Holdings, Mizuho Bank, Deutsche Bank, HSBC Holdings, and Barclays, people with knowledge of the matter said. The financing, which aims to back respective bids of the two companies, ranges from Rs30bn to Rs50bn ($347.61m to $579.35m). Aster DM Healthcare, another contender in the bidding process, has not yet finalised its financing plans, according to sources. The sale of Sahyadri Hospitals is being orchestrated by Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan (OTPP), which holds a 98.9% stake in the hospital chain. OTPP, with more than $3bn in investments, appointed Jefferies to manage the sale earlier this year. The Canadian pension fund had acquired Sahyadri Hospitals at a valuation of Rs25bn from Everstone Capital, which had previously purchased the chain from its founder, Dr Charudutt Apte, in 2019 for Rs10bn. Sahyadri Hospitals, founded in 1996 by neurosurgeon Dr Apte, operates 11 hospitals with 1,300 operational beds across Pune, Nashik, and Karad in the state of Maharashtra. The healthcare provider is part of several government health schemes, including Ayushman Bharat and the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS). This acquisition comes at a time when India's hospital sector is undergoing consolidation. In February, Fortis Healthcare signed definitive agreements to acquire Shrimann Superspecialty Hospital in Jalandhar, Punjab, India.
