DMK vs Centre: Stalin govt replaces Rupee symbol in budget logo with Tamil letter, draws BJP's ire
New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday raided at least 10 locations, including the residence of state-run liquor retailer Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) Managing Director S Visakan, film producer Akash Baskaran, SNJ Distilleries, and government contractors in connection with the alleged Rs 1,000 crore liquor scam.
It is important to note that the development comes a week after the Madras High Court told the ED to continue with its investigation into the scam under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The court also dismissed a petition by TASMAC and the DMK dispensation seeking to declare the raids as 'illegal.' According to the reports, the ED officers recovered printouts of WhatsApp chats near IAS officer Visakan residence, containing details related to TASMAC's liquor procurement.
According to the officials, the raids are in continuation with the searches by ED at TASMAC headquarters in the first and second week of March. They further added that the probe is now focused on the money generation avenues of the state-run liquor.
Besides Visakan, Akash Baskaran, producer at Dawn Pictures and linked to the DMK's first family, was also searched by the ED. Tamil Nadu Government Moves Supreme Court
The Tamil Nadu government has gone to the Supreme Court against the order of the Madras High Court that gave a free hand to the agency in the probe. 'The matter will be taken up for hearing in two or three days,' a senior Supreme Court registry official told TNIE.
The state has filed its appeal against the April 23 order of Justices SM Subramaniam and K Rajasekar of the Madras HC, dismissing the petitions filed by the state government and Tasmac against the raids conducted from April 6 to 8 at multiple places, including Tasmac headquarters.

Mamata demands that BJP-led Centre release all MNREGA pending dues

Kolkata, June 18 (UNI) As the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the Central Government to resume the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme in West Bengal from August 1, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee demanded that the BJP-led government release all pending dues that have been withheld for the past four years. 'The court has ordered that work must resume from August. But for four years, no work was done, no money was released. Our leaders staged protests in Delhi, and cases were filed against them. Central ministers didn't even meet them. We were humiliated in many ways,' the chief minister said in a press conference at Nabanna on Wednesday. 'We paid the workers from state funds. That money must be returned. The Centre must calculate the dues from the day the scheme was stopped and pay accordingly. Why was our share of the money given to other states? That is a crime,' she added. The central government which funds the scheme entirely had suspended MGNREGA funding to West Bengal in March 2022, citing large-scale misappropriation. West Bengal received Rs 7,507.80 crore under MGNREGA in the 2021–22 financial year. However, since then, no funds have been disbursed. The Centre had justified its actions by citing inconsistencies found in 31 out of 63 inspected worksites, according to RTI replies. 'Funds for the 100-day work scheme were not provided. People were made to work, but no payment was given. Who will pay them? We did—from the state government's own resources, through the 'Karmashree' scheme. And now they've come to celebrate 'Bangla Diwas'—those who have constantly insulted and deprived Bengal.' 'We will review this petition. You are sending teams to Bengal, but first, release the funds. It has been four years, and not a single rupee has been given. This is public money,' she said. The chief minister was referring to a four-member verification committee comprising representatives from the Central and State Governments, along with officials from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) and the Accountant General. In April 2025, the committee reported that Rs 24 crore had been recovered from the districts under investigation. Additional Solicitor General Ashok Kumar Chakraborty, representing the Centre, said in the court that central investigation teams uncovered irregularities in districts like Hooghly, East Bardhaman, Malda, and Darjeeling, involving embezzlement of over Rs 50 crores. A broader audit revealed anomalies amounting to Rs 613 crores, of which Rs 2.1 crores had been recovered by the state as of 2024. However, the court observed that the grievances of genuine workers cannot be ignored on account of administrative or political concerns marking a major development in the long-standing deadlock over the rural employment programme. 'All the allegations are from before 2022. You are free to take any action regarding those. But the project must be started now,' Chief Justice Sivagnanam observed in response during the hearing. The court further clarified that MGNREGA, as legislated, does not allow for its indefinite suspension even in the face of corruption charges, and that any such action violates the spirit of the Act. Nirmala Sitharaman ask fintechs to find solutions to prevent cyberfrauds

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday asked fintech startups to come out with solutions to deal with the rising incidence of digital arrests, cheating by fly-by-night operators, and other kinds of cyberfrauds. Lauding the success of fintechs, the Finance Minister said they have helped in speeding up financial inclusion, and taking the payment system to even the far-flung areas of the country. Speaking at the Digital Payments Awards 2025 Ceremony here, Sitharaman said it is important to ensure that startup companies come up with solutions so that people are not arrested at home digitally, or fly by night operators don't take away their money. Another major threat, she pointed out, is 'deep fake', which is causing a lot of damage to the public in large. "Today, we should take care of addressing them so we need a set of fintech companies which are constantly working to give solutions for the newer challenges which are arising," Sitharaman said. She also called upon the fintech sector to further expand the digital lending facilities to the key MSME sector. Sitharaman further said Indian fintech innovations have the potential to become global public goods that can benefit other emerging and developed economies. This will open new markets for our firms. International merchant payments through UPI are now accepted at select merchant outlets in seven countries, including Bhutan, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka and the UAE. "Our players must aim to export our successful models abroad and capture global markets. We have the talent, we have the market scale, and we have the proven solutions," she said. This, she said, will open up new markets for domestic firms. Indian fintech market is projected to grow to over $400 billion by 2028-29. "That's not too far away. Just three years. "Together, let us Innovate, Include, and Inspire'. Innovate new solutions fearlessly, include every citizen in your vision, and inspire the world with what India can achieve," she said. Noting that India now actually accounts for almost half of all real-time digital transactions in the world, she said direct benefit transfer (DBT) has saved a lot money by plugging leakages. About Rs 44 trillion have been transferred through DBT since 2014 and Rs 3.48 trillion have been saved. The Minister said the speed at which innovation is happening in India is just a dream for many other countries. "Several advanced countries are nowhere close to the kind of momentum our fintech companies have achieved, not just in terms of progress in their respective areas, but also in creating entirely new paradigms.
