Elon Musk's Neuralink closes Series E funding round

SAN FRANCISCO — Elon Musk's (picture) brain computer interface startup Neuralink announced on Monday that it has closed a US$650 million funding round, Xinhua reported.
The Series E fundraiser included investors such as ARK Invest, Founders Fund, Sequoia Capital, and Thrive Capital, among others, the company said in a blog post.
Neuralink last raised a US$280 million Series D funding round in 2023, with an additional US$43 million tranche added months later.
The company said it has now conducted more human clinical trials, implanting its brain chips in five individuals with severe paralysis.
In May, Neuralink received a Breakthrough Devices Programme designation from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The Breakthrough Devices Programme is a voluntary programme for certain medical devices and device-led combination products that provide for more effective treatment or diagnosis of life-threatening or irreversibly debilitating diseases or conditions, according to the FDA.
The programme is intended to provide patients and healthcare providers with timely access to medical devices by speeding up development, assessment, and review for premarket approval. — BERNAMA-XINHUA

Egypt reports 82.7-pct surge in expatriates' remittances over 9 months

CAIRO, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Remittances from Egyptians working abroad increased by 82.7 percent from July 2024 to March 2025, reaching approximately 26.4 billion U.S. dollars, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) said in a report on Wednesday. The report said the remittances continued its upward trend and recorded an unprecedented historical leap year-on-year. Remittances from Egyptian expatriates in March rose by 63.7 percent year-on-year to 3.4 billion dollars, compared with 2.1 billion dollars in the same month last year, the CBE noted. Karim al-Omda, Egyptian economic expert and lecturer at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, told Xinhua that the surge in remittances is attributed to the economic reforms that Egypt has implemented since March 2024. An economic crisis characterized by currency devaluation and foreign exchange shortages prompted the Egyptian government to implement a series of economic reforms in 2024, such as the liberalization of the exchange rate, subsidy reforms, and privatization initiatives. These measures restored confidence among Egyptian expatriates, leading to a sharp rise in remittance inflows. The CBE also introduced appealing financial instruments tailored for Egyptians abroad. Remittances constitute a key source of Egypt's foreign currency reserves.

Canada's union calls for countermeasures against U.S. escalating tariffs

OTTAWA, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Canada's largest private sector union, Unifor, on Wednesday urged the federal government to act without delay to counter the escalating steel and aluminum tariffs initiated by the United States. The decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum imports to 50 percent is a direct threat to Canadian jobs and economic stability, said the union in a news release. "These tariffs are killing investment in our steel, aluminum, and auto sectors, and we are already seeing the consequences in lost jobs and economic instability," said Unifor National President Lana Payne. "We need immediate and forceful action to defend good jobs and safeguard our national economic security." The 50 percent tariff, which came into effect on Wednesday, doubles the previous 25 percent duty imposed on Canadian steel and aluminum imports since March 2025. Canada remains the largest supplier of both steel and aluminum to the United States. The United States imports approximately a quarter of its steel from Canadian suppliers, while half of all U.S. aluminum consumption originates from Canada. Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing 320,000 workers in every major area of the economy.

California freshwater fish found to be teeming with parasites

NEW YORK, June 4 (Xinhua) -- More than 90 percent of popular freshwater fish in U.S. Southern California are carrying human-infecting parasites, posing a significant danger for those who like to eat freshly caught freshwater fish, according to a study published on Tuesday in the Journal of Infectious Diseases. The parasites are called trematodes. Two species of the flatworms were discovered in California's freshwater fish. The tiny, flattened and sluglike creatures can cause gastrointestinal problems, weight loss and lethargy when a person eats an infected fish. In some rare and severe cases, the parasites have caused strokes or heart attacks. "Americans don't usually think about parasites when they eat freshwater fish because it hasn't historically been an issue here," the Los Angeles Times quoted Ryan Hechinger, the study's senior author, as saying. In fact, even when a person has fallen ill from a locally caught infected freshwater fish, their healthcare provider will typically ask if the patient has recently traveled outside of the United States, Hechinger said.
