New Zealand's greatest rail journey deserves a spot on your bucket list

What is it about train journeys that, at their best, make them the undisputed champions of relaxed travel? I am thinking of train travel as it should be: comfortable seats, huge windows to enjoy the views, charming staff, delicious food and drinks served at white-clothed tables, and all the luggage securely tucked away in the baggage car.
Plus, of course, an open-sided viewing platform for taking pictures without reflective glass or just for breathing in the clean air and enjoying the scenery. You might assume I'm thinking of Canada's Rocky Mountaineer here – which has, of course, a well-deserved place on many a bucket list. In this instance, though, it's the other side of the planet I have in mind.
New Zealand has three principal train lines that, between them, cover much of the country from north to south; the Northern Explorer, the Coastal Pacific Scenic Train and the TranzAlpine Scenic Train. Each of these have been combined by Great Journeys New Zealand into a two- to three-week trip that seamlessly covers the country's considerable length.
The staff on board not only offer an unceasing supply of fine dining, they also point out historical sights, any particularly staggering landscapes (there are many), relate myths and offer occasional Maori blessings, too.
There is also an app, so you can follow your journey on the map along with a detailed commentary. This means you're given fair warning to get to the viewing car to snap, say, a series of viaducts across a river hundreds of feet below.
This is not a one-off. The train reveals an ever-changing tapestry of forests and farmsteads; sheep and escarpments; mountains and glaciers; kaleidoscopes of butterflies; cliff sides dense with tree ferns; wetlands and marshes; volcanic cones and the surreal sight of steam rising in billows from the earth. It's a photographer's dream.
Within half an hour of leaving Auckland by train, you begin, in fact, to get a feel for the place. New Zealand is slightly bigger than the UK but its population is just five million and it's a land that's empty and spotless. There's no litter, barely any graffiti, and every lawn is neatly mown. The vineyards are so tended that the vines resemble topiary. The dairy cattle snoozing in the late summer sunshine have surely been arranged in perfect compositions.
Even the air is pristine: New Zealand is in Roaring Forties (strong westerly winds) territory – the only other snippets of land that share this southerly latitude are in Patagonia and South Africa. As a result, the winds blow across untouched ocean and the air is crystal clear and clean (though the lack of pollution also results in a particularly fierce sun; factor 50 is recommended).
You don't spend the whole time on the train, of course – the rail network is extensive but not exhaustive – so the pattern for this trip means the train does the heavy lifting in getting you to a series of the country's most congenial towns and cities, where you stay for a night or two and explore. I was travelling as part of a small group of eight, plus our delightful escort, Maria, who arranged all the practicalities, hotels and off-train trips.
In Hamilton, for instance, we visited the gardens; Raglan harbour for a sunset cruise and a walk along black volcanic sands; the majestic glow worm grottos of Otorohanga; and Sanctuary Mountain – a fenced, predator-free area where endangered, often flightless birds watch you with as much interest as you watch them. They need the protection: their numbers have plummeted and are only just starting to come back.
In 1770, before the introduction of predatory land mammals (everything from cats to weasels) to these islands, Captain Cook's botanist John Banks recorded in his diary that the dawn chorus that woke him each morning in Queen Charlotte Sound was the most melodious wild music he had ever heard, almost as if the birds were imitating small bells. In the forest here you can hear it still.
While there are arranged group trips, you can often explore on your own. After Hamilton, we headed to Rotorua and had a free day. I decided to visit Te Puai; with its boiling mud and spouting geysers it is the hub of New Zealand's geo-thermal activity as well as one of its main centres for Maori culture.
The next day, we all met up again to take the train to the capital, Wellington. With its steep streets and pretty painted wooden Victorian houses, it's sometimes compared to San Francisco – but this would underestimate the inventiveness of the Wellingtonians, who have built their homes on vertiginous plots that can only be reached by privately run funiculars (some 500 of them).
While this is a trip that is focused chiefly on the train, it embraces just about every other kind of transport along the way, too: buses and taxis, jet boats and catamarans and, to reach the South Island and the pretty town of Picton (gateway to the Marlborough vineyards), the Interislander Ferry. The vineyards here offer not just tastings but outdoor lunches where you can bask in the same February sun as the surrounding grapes, approaching ripeness at the end of the New Zealand summer.
South Island's Coastal Pacific train, meanwhile, runs close to the rugged shoreline past cliffs, grassy dunes, rocky bays, a turquoise sea and endless empty beaches.
We stopped in Kaikoura for the whale watching – this is one of the few places you can see sperm whales so close to land, as the deep underwater canyons here are home to their preferred food: giant squid. Two whales appeared and obligingly dove, flipping their tails magnificently.
It was wonderful but wet (New Zealand's rain can be unusually penetrating), so all the more pleasant to be back on the train with a constant flow of meals (tea, dinner, dessert) and general cosseting. I was in P coach and I wondered idly whether, given the ambience, this stood for Pullman. Actually, it's simply the Plus in Scenic Plus.
At the end of the line is Christchurch, a city still rising from the ruins of its devastating earthquake 14 years ago and now boasting a variety of handsome new buildings. The place was en fête on the sunny Saturday I was there (the rain disappearing as suddenly as it had arrived). Throngs of people were going to a rock concert in the park, while others were being punted down the River Avon by chaps in Edwardian dress – the NZ culture typically catering for all tastes.
As we journeyed across to the west coast over the next couple of days, there were many memorable moments: a walk to a glacier, an aerial treetop adventure some 65ft above the ground, a jet boat through the mighty Haast River Valley and a cruise through the fjords of Milford Sound.
But the very best had been saved for last – the TranzAlpine train. On its journey to Greymouth, we gazed out on some of the most staggering scenery New Zealand has to offer. Accompanied by all that onboard degustation (two breakfasts – cold then hot – morning tea and lunch), I could only hope that gasping in wonder makes an effective calorie-burning technique.

" Read more in our Q&A. Name: Andrew Donaldson What is your business called? Comrie Croft – and our latest venture, Journeys. Where is it based? We're based on an old farm just outside the picturesque village of Comrie in Perthshire. It's a stunning part of Scotland, nestled between the Highlands and Lowlands, and the land itself plays a huge part in what we do. What does it produce/do? Comrie Croft is a nature-based destination focused on regeneration – of the land, the community, and the local economy. We operate as a collective of collaborating enterprises, so there is a lot going on under one shared roof, or rather, across the farm – we run an eco-lodge, a camping and a glamping site. We have a community-supported market garden, a flower farm, a forest school, a wedding venue in the old barn, a farm shop, and a café that serves up seasonal food grown just metres away. Our sauna and trail network also make it a bit of a wellbeing retreat. Combined turnover across all elements is now over £2 million – and growing steadily. How many employees? We've got a core team of around 70 people. That includes staff across hospitality, farming, trail building, guiding, education, admin – you name it. It takes a village, and we're lucky to have one. Why did you take the plunge? I've always believed rural Scotland has enormous untapped potential – as a place to visit, and as a place to live well, build livelihoods, and restore nature. Back in 2008, my wife, my brother, and I were already running the backpacker hostel that the previous owners had established in the old farm buildings. They gave us the chance to buy the whole farm. We had a strong vision, a business plan rooted in social and environmental purpose, and an amazing community behind us. We crowd-funded part of the purchase, invested what we had, and borrowed the rest from Triodos, a brilliant sustainable bank that really understood what we were trying to do. What were you doing before? I was working in East Africa with a good friend and entrepreneur, helping to set up the Conservation Development Centre. We managed wildlife conservation and community development projects around national parks. That experience gave me a real insight into how land, livelihoods and conservation can – and should – work together. What do you least enjoy? Repetition. I'm energised by people, variety and by bringing new ideas to life. I'm definitely more of a 'start-up mode' person – I love getting things off the ground. Once things are ticking over, I'd rather hand over to someone who thrives on consistency and systems. What are your ambitions for the firm? To distil everything we've learned here into something that can inspire and support others. I'd love to see more land-based, community-rooted enterprises that want to make the world a better place flourish across rural Scotland. There's so much possibility out there – if we can help others unlock that, that's a win. What single thing would most help? A real shift in mindset from local authority planners. We need planning policies that genuinely support locally led rural enterprise, sustainable housing, and community development. Right now, the system can be a real blocker to progress – it's not navigable by the rural communities and local entrepreneurs with limited budgets we see on the ground. What is the most valuable lesson you have learned? Build the right team. With the right people – positive, motivated, aligned with your values – almost anything is possible. It's about skills, culture, collaboration, and shared purpose. What was your best moment? It's hard to top this one – walking out of the maternity unit at Perth Royal Infirmary with my wife and our first son, while taking a phone call from the bank telling me that our loan to buy the farm had been approved. New life in every sense. What was your worst moment? The death from lung cancer of two of our team. That was really tough – they were more than colleagues, they were part of the Comrie Croft community. It was a painful reminder of what's important when times get tough. How do you relax? Anything outdoors with family or friends – hill-walking, river swimming, biking, skiing, travel. The mountains are my happy place. I find peace and energy in wild places. Even connection with God – which helps put everything in perspective.

The AA has warned drivers to expect heavy congestion across the upcoming bank holiday weekend with millions of journeys predicted each day. A survey released by AA shows that over 20 million journeys will be made on Friday 23 May, while over 19 million will be taken on each of the following days to Monday 26 May. As a result, the AA has issued an amber traffic warning to alert drivers to expect extra congestion on the roads. Half of the trips will be under 50 miles suggesting traffic will be focussed around local destinations and attractions such as retail parks and town centres. "Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination. Let's make sure we all get there safely and enjoy the time with our loved ones," Shaun Jones, from AA said. Due to the expected significant increase in traffic over the weekend, AA is advising drivers to plan their journeys in advance, stay updated with congestion and roadworks, and ensure vehicles are roadworthy before setting off. 'By following these tips, we can all contribute to a safer and more pleasant travel experience during the bank holiday weekend,' Jones added. One in 10 of those surveyed said they are not driving over the long weekend, while 30 per cent were unsure of their plans. With the recent sun and warm weather, over seven million plan to embark on trips to the coast, sporting events and garden centres on Saturday 24 May, while 3.5 million indicated they intend to take a long weekend break away from home. The Met Office has said to expect more unsettled conditions with rain or showers in many areas in the UK, ending the prolonged dry spell. Mark Sidaway, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: 'Whilst the bank holiday won't be a complete washout, with some sunshine expected, this weekend represents a notable shift from the fine and settled weather pattern that has dominated so far this month.' While the AA reported that fewer respondents than they expected were planning to head to the coast, it anticipates that routes to popular coastal destinations to be busier than usual, if the previous good weather continues. These include roads heading towards the east coast such as Skegness as well as the south west and Cornwall, including the A303, M5 and A38, and those leading to Wales such as the M4.

Cornwall is as well known for its organic beef and pork, artisan cheeses and air-dried charcuterie as it is for fish and seafood. Most restaurants serve a little of both, often garnished with plants and berries foraged from the hedgerows and cliffs: rock samphire, wild garlic, alexanders and wild flower petals. In a county with a strong conservation ethos and a growing body of organic smallholders, there's plenty of choice for vegetarians and vegans too – both in shops and on restaurant menus. In summer farmers' wives still hang out the cream tea signs: just remember the Cornish way is to put the jam on first. West Cornwall Kota Restaurant with Rooms New Zealander Jude Kereama has introduced Cornish folk to the spicy, citrusy delights of Pacific Rim cooking in this quayside cottage in Porthleven. Kota Restaurant with Rooms is Maori for shellfish and this is one of the few places that serves a French-style seafood platter, which must be ordered 24 hours ahead. A particular favourite among regulars is the Rockpool, a combination of pan-fried hake, prawn ravioli, mussels and seaweed. For spice lovers, the curried monkfish with red lentil dahl is a winner. And for those that aren't a fan of fish, there's Cornish beef featherblades with tempura short ribs. You can also expect a super choice of European and New Zealand wines. Tolcarne Inn For market-fresh fish and seafood, head for this traditional fishermen's pub beside the harbour in Britain's largest fishing port. It's owned by Ben Tunnicliffe who stepped away from his Michelin-starred restaurant in Penzance to indulge his love of unfussy fish cookery. The menu is short and chalked up daily depending on the catch. The fish soup is a particular favourite as is any dish served with Ben's signature risotto. If someone in your party doesn't like fish, phone ahead and the kitchen will prepare an alternative. There are outdoor picnic-style tables for fine days. The Porthmeor Café Ask a local where they like to eat in St Ives and the answer will invariably be this simple café with a grandstand view of surfers in action. Eat inside the glasshouse or in a heated open-air booth (once former beach huts). Australian chef Cameron Jennings has turned tapas into food art. The menu changes seasonally but regular favourites include pea and blue cheese arancini, the best crispy squid around, and slow-cooked braised beef with polenta. Finish with delete freshly made churros a slice of its heavenly dark chocolate and olive oil tart. Blas Burgerworks These are the best burgers in Cornwall, maybe in Britain. Run by a trio of friends, this tiny restaurant and take-away is tucked away in the Warren at the station end of the harbour. The beef is local and traditionally reared, the chips are genuinely hand-cut, and the ethos is green. As well as a classic bacon-and-Davidstow-cheddar burger there's rotisserie chicken and vegetarian and vegan options. The Shore Bruce Rennie adores Japan and this small intimate dining room in the heart of Penzance celebrates his love of its cuisine. He uses the freshest ingredients, sourced from farmers and fishermen who are friends, to create mouthwatering umami dishes, from Izakaya small plates at lunchtimes to a beautifully balanced six-course tasting menu in the evenings. Each course is introduced by Bruce with enthusiastic panache before he dashes back into the kitchen to add the finishing touches. The wine list is superb. The South Coast Star & Garter The historic Star & Garter pub on Falmouth's waterfront has won a slew of awards for its modern British cooking. delete since it opened two years ago. The owner-chefs work with local fishermen to land the best of the catch and butcher, cure and smoke all the meat themselves. delete Monday brisket day sentence. Its Sunday roasts are as good as your mother's: perfectly cooked sirloin of beef, leg of lamb or pork with great crackling and all the trimmings including potatoes roasted in duck fat. The Hidden Hut Imaginative meat, fish and seafood dishes, soups, sandwiches and salads, served by local couple Simon and Jemma Stallard from a shack on a quiet beach on the Roseland peninsula. The concept has attracted a huge following especially for its themed delete weekly feast nights (the main course could be spring lamb, spit-roast chicken or River Fal shellfish), which sell out as soon as booking opens. Guests bring their own plates, cutlery and wine to sup at long picnic tables whatever the weather. It's a sociable gathering and you never know who you'll meet. Culture Restaurant This new venture on Custom House Quay is a welcome departure from Falmouth's fairly predictable food scene. Hylton Espey is passionate about sourcing locally from niche organic suppliers and foraging among the hedgerows and rockpools. Diners sit down at 7pm for a six-course feast that lifts humble ingredients into flavour bombs. The bread alone, made from a rare local variety of wheat handmilled by Hylton, is worth the journey. A place for true food lovers, this Cornish 'Journey Menu' is well-priced and the wine list has some superb and unusual wines. Sam's on the Beach Located in an old lifeboat station beside the beach at Polkerris, near Daphne du Maurier's Menabilly home, this is a lively place for lunch or a sunset dinner in summer. Sit inside or out. There are proper wood-fired stone-baked pizzas (including a delicious garlic and herb flatbread to share) as well as seafood salads, mussels every which way, and proper American-style meatballs with spaghetti and barbecue sauce. In fact there's something for everyone, from small children to adults with allergens, and it's all freshly made with locally sourced ingredients. Ardor Owner-chef Dorian Janmatt who spent part of his childhood in Spain and worked for nine years at the Manoir aux Quat'Saisons serves imaginative tapas and mezze plates and shareable mains that capture the flavours and cooking styles of the Mediterranean. Popular tapas include chorizo pillowbread, squid orzo pasta and oysters followed by charcoal grilled dry-aged steaks, proper rotisserie chicken, and succulent pork ribs with quince and rosemary. Leave room for the fresh churros served with a rich chocolate dipping sauce. Already a hit with locals, it's best to book for dinner. The North Coast Restaurant Nathan Outlaw Nathan Outlaw is one of Britain's finest fish chefs whose simple dish descriptions hide flavour sensations that few can equal. Cut this sentence The award of two Michelin stars is richly deserved. The modern dining room has floor-to-ceiling windows that make the most of the sea and cliff views. There's no choice here: dinner comprises an eight-course Seafood Tasting Menu with a matching wine flight. Dietary requirements can be catered for with advance notice. Outlaw also operates the more affordable Outlaw's Fish Kitchen on Port Isaac Harbour. Both restaurants have been awarded one Michelin star for 2023. The Seafood Restaurant Even though Rick Stein is now rarely in Padstow, the Seafood Restaurant remains the aspirational place to eat fish and seafood in Cornwall. The exotic, spicy dishes on the menu reflecting Rick's travels are tempting, but stick to the freshly landed fish simply cooked with seasonal vegetables or tackle a whole lobster. No reservations are required to sit at the seafood bar which occupies the centre of the large dining room. Here you can eat Porthilly oysters, sushi and sashimi prepared in front of you or choose from the main menu.
