Delivery agents continue to brave Bengaluru's monsoon without safety nets
Raghunath, a delivery agent working with a popular quick commerce platform, manoeuvred his two-wheeler through the waterlogged streets of Vasanthnagar at 8 p.m. on a busy weekday this week, balancing speed and care as he tried to keep a bag containing two mangoes dry. 'It gets very difficult for us. When it rains like this, the roads get worse, and it takes more time to reach,' he explained.
Bengaluru's food and grocery delivery network has seen immense growth over the past decade, with companies promising delivery in under ten minutes. But amid this race for speed, the safety and working conditions of delivery agents, especially during the monsoon, are often overlooked.
Private vehicles and the risks
'Some years ago, the State government had said that private vehicles should not be used for delivery services,' said D. Raju, National President of the Delivery Boys Welfare Association (DWBA), Bengaluru. 'But many companies have ignored this. Most agents still use personal scooters or rent electric vehicles like Yulu, which are unsafe, especially on flooded roads,' he said. Raju added that electric bikes lack basic safety equipment like helmets and are not designed for heavy rain or night-time travel. 'The safety of night-shift workers is at constant risk,' he said.
Thousif Ahmed, another quick delivery agent, said that potholes and mud-slicked roads during the monsoon season make riding extremely difficult. 'My bike almost skidded off the road several times. Still, customers keep calling, asking why the delivery is late. Only a few understand what we go through,' he said.
Frequent illness
Beyond traffic and vehicle concerns, many agents also struggle with frequent illness during the rainy season due to long hours in wet clothes. Rising petrol prices cut deep into their already limited earnings, especially for those using their own vehicles. 'Sometimes we have to choose between filling petrol and buying food for ourselves,' said one agent. There's also a lack of access to rest stops or clean drinking water during long shifts, adding further strain to an already tough job, the delivery agent explained.
Despite being an essential part of Bengaluru's daily convenience, delivery agents said that their voices often go unheard, particularly when it comes to safety and fair working conditions. When contacted, major delivery platforms like Swiggy and Zomato did not respond to queries about safety measures or vehicle policies for their delivery partners.

Mongolia's Prime Minister Resigns After Protests Spark No-Confidence Vote
A historic no-confidence vote has resulted in Mongolia's Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene becoming the latest Asian leader to resign after protests. Oyun-Erdene resigned on Tuesday following a vote of no confidence. This comes after a period of mass protests across Ulaanbaatar. Oyun-Erdene has become only the latest Asian leader to be removed due to large protest movements. Other leaders such as ex-Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and ex-Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa have been forced to resign in recent years. Mongolia is a landlocked country situated between Russia and China. The country was ruled under a one-party communist state system during the cold war, only becoming a democracy after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Since then, there has been a continued and sustained effort to try and build a strong democratic system. However, many in the country have alleged that Mongolia has suffered from widespread corruption. Wealthy business and political elites have been hoarding profits from a years-long coal mining boom. In the Transparency International Corruption Index the country has fallen several places to 114 out of 180 countries. Oyun-Erdene is the leader of the Mongolian People's Party and has been prime minister for the past four years. During the 2024 election there were a series of political reforms, including the expansion of parliament from 76 seats to 126. This led to the MPP losing its majority and having to form a coalition government. This coalition collapsed last month when the Democratic Party was expelled. 'Resignation is easy' Oyun-Erdene has come under increased scrutiny in recent months with allegations of family corruption. This was sparked by reports of lavish spending, including Oyun-Erdene's son during an extravagant marriage proposal posted on social media. This sparked outrage with large protests erupting across Mongolia largely centred around Ulaanbaatar. Protestors called for the resignation of the Prime Minister, and on Monday many people went to the streets stating that 'resignation is easy.' The Prime Minister rejected the allegations of corruption and accused the protestors of having major visible and hidden interests. Oyun-Erdene also claimed that the protests would just lead to a fractious political situation and economic chaos if he was forced from power. Early on Tuesday, the Mongolian parliament held a vote of no-confidence on the Prime Minister's leadership. The result of the vote was 44 in favor and 38 against his leadership. This vote meant he didn't reach the necessary 64-vote threshold and Oyun-Erdene was therefore forced to resign from his office. 'It was an honour to serve my country and people in times of difficulties including pandemics, wars and tariffs,' Oyun-Erdene stated, adding that he will remain in place until a new leader is selected within at least the next 30 days. This event has led to renewed instability in Mongolia's politics and will have a clear impact on its future.

Morocco's Banks To Enjoy Special Eid Al Adha Holiday on June 9
Rabat – The Moroccan Professional Banking Group (GPBM) has announced Monday, June 9, as an exceptional holiday for banks. The decision followed CGEM's appeal calling on the private sector to grant employees a day off on Monday in celebration of Eid Al Adha, which will fall on June 7 in Morocco. 'Each bank is responsible for informing its employees and clients of this decision,' the group said, noting that banking institutions will also take the necessary measures to ensure an adequate supply of banknotes and the continuous and smooth operation of ATMs. The bank's statement comes just a day after the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM) urged the private sector companies to grant employees a day off on June 9. CGEM said the decision aligns with the public sector, after the government announced a special holiday on Monday for employees. 'We invite, as far as possible, private sector companies to also grant Monday, June 9, as a day off to their employees,' CGEM President Chakib Alj said. Last month, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs confirmed that Eid Al Adha will be on June 7 this year. The celebration, which commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, falls on the tenth day of Dhu Al Hijjah- the twelfth and the last month in the Islamic calendar. Eid Al Adha will look different in the North African country this year, as Moroccans will not perform the ritual sacrifice. In February, King Mohammed VI announced the cancellation of the sacrifice ritual, citing challenges like drought. The monarch said the concern takes into account the economic and climate challenges Morocco is facing, which has led to a remarkable decline in livestock population. 'We invite you to celebrate Eid al Adha, God willing, in its usual spiritual form by attending the Eid prayer in misallas and mosques, giving alms, gathering with loved ones, and performing acts of devotion and piety – thanking God for his immense generosity and seeking reward and divine recompense,' the monarch said.
