Erbil lights up its oldest landmark
Shafaq News/ Erbil's ancient citadel lit up Thursday night, signaling a fresh chapter in the restoration of one of the region's most iconic historic sites.
According to the High Commission for the Revitalization of Erbil Citadel, the restoration project is entering a new phase that will see families return to live within its ancient walls—part of a broader master plan to bring the site back to life.
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2014, the citadel stands as a defining cultural landmark in the Kurdistan Region, celebrated for its unique architectural character.
Historical records chart the citadel's legacy across millennia, spanning the Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, Assyrian, Persian, Hellenistic, Islamic, and Ottoman eras.
The fortress comprises three main districts and features an array of historic buildings, including diwans, traditional houses, mosques, Sufi lodges, and old-style public baths. Its circular outer wall—renowned for both its strength and elegant design—remains a signature element of the site.
Project leaders aim to turn the citadel into a thriving hub of culture and tourism, highlighting Erbil's rich heritage and drawing visitors from across Iraq and beyond.

Test flight lands at Mosul Airport ahead of June 10 reopening
Shafaq News/ A test flight by Iraqi Airways successfully landed at Mosul International Airport on Thursday, ahead of the airport's official reopening scheduled for June 10. Nineveh Governor Abdulqadir al-Dakhil told Shafaq News, after arriving aboard the aircraft, that the test flight, which departed from Baghdad and landed in under 30 minutes, is part of broader efforts to restore the city's connectivity with the rest of Iraq and international destinations following years of disruption. 'The airport has been prepared in line with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and is now equipped with a modern runway, a fully developed passenger terminal, and an advanced control tower.' The airport's reopening is expected to take place in the presence of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, who is slated to arrive on one of the first official flights to Mosul as part of the inauguration ceremony. Governor al-Dakhil emphasized that the test landing signals the completion of key reconstruction works and transitions the project into a new phase: the operational management of the airport, noting that negotiations with several international airport management firms will begin after the Eid al-Adha holiday (June 6-9) to identify a qualified operator in line with global aviation practices. 'We will evaluate offers from international firms and hold technical negotiations to ensure that the selected operator meets efficiency standards and enhances Mosul's strategic and economic role,' al-Dakhil added. The airport project, initially launched in 2023, comes after extensive damage inflicted during ISIS's control of the city between 2014 and 2017. Reconstruction has been financed through the Nineveh provincial budget, in coordination with the Iraqi Ministries of Transport and Interior, the Civil Aviation Authority, and the Border Crossings Authority.

Syria's Latakia towns under curfew after attack
Shafaq News/ On Wednesday, Syrian security forces imposed a curfew in the towns of Al-Daliyah and Beit Aana in the countryside of Jableh, south of Latakia, amid heightened tension and a heavy military presence. Syrian General Security announced in a statement that the curfew was imposed after 'an illegal group' attacked the communication center in Al-Daliya area. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that the curfew, which began at 7:30 p.m. (local time), 'coincides with reports of an assault on an abandoned government building and an ongoing operation to take control of positions previously held by an armed faction preparing to withdraw from the area.' Military convoys from Hama's countryside, equipped with heavy weapons and affiliated with the General Security Directorate and the Ministry of Defense, were seen heading toward the coastal region. The purpose and final destination of these deployments remain unclear, SOHR revealed.

Turkish-PKK clashes ignite farmlands in Duhok, Kurdistan
Shafaq News/ On Wednesday, fires broke out in Mount Gara in northern Duhok province, Kurdistan Region, as a result of clashes between Turkish forces and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK.) Eyewitnesses told Shafaq News that the flames destroyed thousands of dunams of agricultural land and forested areas, causing significant material losses, adding that civil defense teams and firefighting vehicles have been unable to reach the area due to the tense security situation. Despite the PKK's dissolution, a member of the Community Peace Builders Team revealed on May 30 that the Turkish military carried out 128 artillery attacks.
