Uttar Pradesh To Give 20% Reservation To Ex-Agniveers In Police, PAC, Fire Services

Last Updated: The reservation will be horizontal, applying across all existing categories – General, Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) In a significant initiative to provide meaningful post-service opportunities for Agniveers completing their four-year tenure, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced a 20 per cent reservation for them in direct recruitment to the state police and fire services. An official statement confirmed that the government issued this order on June 6, 2025. Approved by the UP cabinet, chaired by chief minister Yogi Adityanath, this decision ensures that the skills, discipline, and training gained during military service are effectively utilised in civilian roles within the state's security apparatus. The reservation will be horizontal, applying across all existing categories—General, Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC). For example, if an ex-Agniveer belongs to the SC category, the reservation will apply within the SC quota. This reservation will apply to direct recruitment for positions such as police constable, Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) constable, mounted police, and fireman. Furthermore, ex-Agniveers will receive a special age relaxation of up to three years in the upper age limit for these posts, facilitating their transition into civilian employment. This initiative is particularly timely, as the first batch of Agniveers, recruited under the 2022 Agnipath scheme, will complete their service and seek civilian employment starting in 2026. The UP government's proactive step aligns with the national objective of ensuring a smooth transition for Agniveers, 75 per cent of whom will be released after their service with a Seva Nidhi package but without pension benefits. Uttar Pradesh's 20 per cent reservation also sets a high benchmark, exceeding the 10 per cent reservation offered by states like Haryana and Odisha. CPI urges Erode Collector to uphold tribal rights, seeks approval for development works

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has sought the intervention of District Collector Raja Gopal Sunkara, who also serves as the Chairperson of the District-level Committee for the Forest Rights Act (FRA), to ensure that development works intended for tribal communities are not obstructed by the Forest Department. In an email to the Collector, former Bhavanisagar MLA P.L. Sundaram pointed out that a gram sabha resolution had been passed for land conversion to construct a concrete road in the Mavanatham settlement, which falls under the Thalamalai forest range of the Sathyamangalam Forest Division. Another resolution was passed seeking basic facilities for Pudukadu village, under the Hasanur forest range of the Hasanur Forest Division. However, the District Forest Officers (DFOs) of Sathyamangalam and Hasanur refused permission and directed that online applications be submitted through the PARIVESH portal of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to obtain forest and wildlife clearance. The email argued that such permission from the Central Government is not required, and that the rules under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1980, are not applicable to these proposals. It further highlighted that the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, commonly known as the Forest Rights Act (FRA), applies to tiger reserves, national parks, and wildlife sanctuaries across the country and recognises various rights of tribal communities. Under Section 3(2) of the Act and related communications from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs in 2008, 13 categories of development activities for tribal communities are permitted, provided they do not exceed one hectare in area and involve the removal of no more than 75 trees. 'These proposals involve less than one hectare and meet the criteria, so the DFOs of Hasanur and Sathyamangalam should grant permission,' the email stated. It also noted that the denial of such permission constitutes a violation of the FRA and amounts to a criminal offence under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The email concluded by urging the Collector to intervene and ensure that the proposed development works are carried out and the rights of tribal communities are upheld.

60 tribal families still await permanent housing in Palakkad's Parambikulam

PALAKKAD: "Each file represents a life." For the past nine years, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has repeated this powerful message several times to government officials urging them to treat every file with humanity and compassion. But in the dense forests of Parambikulam in Palakkad district, the same message seems to have been lost in the bureaucracy. In the Uravanpadi tribal hamlet alone, 30 fully constructed houses completed back in 2023 remain unused and locked, simply because authorities are yet to assign them house numbers, leaving as many families without the safe shelter they were promised. Another 30 houses spread across Sungam, Earth Dam, Thekkady and Poopara tribal hamlets initiated as far back as 2019 continue to languish in the final phase. Shockingly not a single department appears to have clarity on the reasons behind the delay 'Criminal Negligence' These shocking details were un-earthed when the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Welfare Committee of the Kerala Legislative Assembly held a review meeting of various departments at the Forest Department Information Centre in Anappadi, Parambikulam, regarding the welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the district.
