Drama club joins in knitted postbox topper craze with VE Day theme ahead of latest show
Riverside Drama Club have come up with a novel way to showcase their latest production - with a knitted postbox topper. The club's next production runs from May 7-9 at Bridge of Allan Parish Church halls. 'Paras Over the Barras' by James Barclay has been especially chosen to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day. And some members of the club came up with a special creation to publicise the show in Bridge of Allan. Director George Steele said: 'The play is a WW2 comedy set in the Glasgow Barrowlands. It is brilliant..full of nostalgic belly laughs..and straight out of your granny's room and kitchen..not to be missed.' A spokesperson added: 'A few of the club's 'crafty' members had a fun idea and have created a crocheted and knitted postbox topper to mark the occasion. 'It is a very intricate and detailed project and took almost four months to complete. 'It even lights up at night! 'The topper was installed on April 2 and can be seen on Fountain Road, Bridge of Allan just outside Strathallan Pharmacy. 'The lovely people of Bridge of Alan gave our members such a wonderfully warm welcome, stopping to chat and take photos. The staff from the pharmacy kindly shared photos of the topper on their local Facebook groups. 'We hope the topper will make people smile and that it will be enjoyed by the community as it was an absolute joy to make.' Postbox toppers have been popping up across the UK - many of them commemorating the 80th anniverary of VE Day. Thursday May 8 marks the 80th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day, the day when the Second World War officially came to an end in Europe. The Stirling Observer wants to know if and how the people of the Stirling area plan to commemorate the occasion, or hear from anyone who has their own memories of that day. Commemorations for the 75th anniversary in 2020 were tailored to the Covid-19 lockdown. But 2025 gives Stirling residents an opportunity to mark the date more fully once again. Period drama war film will 'rip your heart out' but you only have days to watch it
The period drama now available to stream on BBC iPlayer - but won't be for much longer A film hailed as "very British", offering a unique perspective on the second world war, is set to depart from BBC iPlayer in just a few days. Set against the backdrop of the 1940 London Blitz, a screenwriter named Catrin and an impromptu cast and crew unite to create a film aimed at lifting national spirits and encouraging America to enter the war. Their Finest (2016) follows the journey of young woman, Catrin Cole (Gemma Arterton), who is recruited by the Ministry of Information to pen scripts for propaganda films. Working alongside another screenwriter and an actor, they endeavour to produce a movie that will elevate national morale and persuade America to join the war - all while navigating the tumultuous environment of the London Blitz and the aftermath of the Dunkirk evacuation. Catrin and her team encounter numerous obstacles along the way, including the relentless bombings. She subsequently collaborates with fellow screenwriter Buckley (Sam Claflin) and quirky actor Ambrose Hilliard (Bill Nighy), discovering her voice, exploring the potency of storytelling, and dealing with the intricacies of war. Although fictional, the film draws inspiration from the real-life efforts of the British film industry to bolster the war effort. On the film reviewing platform Rotten Tomatoes - where the film boasts a sparkling 91% fresh score - fans commend this touch of reality as one of the film's most compelling aspects. "Nearly faultless. Great cast, perfectly directed. A perfect combination of the richest subject in history (WW2), great script, a warm romance, tragedy and poignancy," one viewer penned. Their Finest skilfully intertwines narratives of love, self-discovery, loss and sorrow while focusing on the characters' mission. "A delight from start to finish, except for the part where the film rips your heart out," another critic expressed, with another adding: "A very English movie and incredibly well done." The further shared: "Tremendous cast and performances supporting an excellent story and script. Both heart wrenching and uplifting. Add to your watch list." The star-studded cast includes Arterton, Claflin and Nighy, as well as Jeremy Irons, Jack Huston, Helen McCrory, Eddie Marsan and Jake Lacy. Their Finest is currently available to stream on BBC iPlayer, but will be leaving the platform on June 7.

Dad's Army star's Arthur Lowe's Pembrokeshire connection
The fundraising event is being staged at the Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre, and to promote it, volunteer Peter Mitchell has dressed up as the legendary Captain Mainwaring of the Walmington Home Guard, who was played in the nostalgic series by actor Arthur Lowe. In 1940 he was a Sergeant in the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment and he well remembered the devastating German Air Force attacks on the town. The 1940s Big Band Dance takes place in Pembroke Dock on Saturday June 21 and commemorates the 80th anniversaries of VE and VJ-Days as well as the end of the Second World War. The dance will be held in a marquee sponsored by the Port of Milford Haven and located alongside one of the historic flying boat hangars in the former Royal Dockyard. Originally unveiled 80 years ago in what is now the Heritage Centre, the window has for the last 30 years been displayed at the RAF Museum in London.
