Keqiao Diamond League 2025: Akani Simbine wins 100m in photo finish thriller as Mondo Duplantis dominates

Akani Simbine won a thrilling 100m in a photo finish on Saturday at the second Diamond League meeting of the season while Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis dominated the pole vault but failed to break his own world record.
South Africa's Simbine claimed victory in Keqiao, near Shanghai in China, by dipping under the line in 9.98 seconds, beating Jamaican Olympic silver medallist Kishane Thompson by a whisker (9.99).
Simbine, who ran 9.90sec in Gaborone last month and won last week in the Diamond League opener in China's Xiamen (9.99), said he was 'not happy with the start'.
'It is just frustrating that I did not get it right today, but I was at least able to make up for that mistake and get the win,' the 31-year-old said.
Duplantis triumphed once more with minimum fuss.
He failed in his three attempts to clear 6.28m, instead comfortably winning with a meeting-record 6.11m.
The US-born Swede, who holds the world record of 6.27m, sat out three of the lower heights before taking a clear lead from Greece's Emmanouil Karalis.

Duplantis struggled a week ago in Xiamen because of the wind -- but he still won.
'The jump did not feel that great and the run did not feel that great either,' he said in a warm and breezy Keqiao.
'So to have a good attempt while not feeling my best is actually a really good thing. I will keep working on my speed.'
The 25-year-old double Olympic champion is building towards the World Championships in Tokyo, where he is aiming for the hat-trick.

He said: 'I am going to take another month with no competitions, just train hard and make sure I can build up to a really good, healthy and strong season leading into Tokyo in September.'
Olympic and world champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine won the high jump as the only woman to clear 2.00m. She also triumphed in Xiamen.
'I like my performance tonight,' she said.
'I improve it step by step on my competition from last week because now I jumped two metres at the first attempt.'
Warholm in 'messy' race
Karsten Warholm underlined his superiority in the men's 400m hurdles but did not trouble his world record of 45.94 seconds, set at the Covid-delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

The 29-year-old Norwegian clocked 47.28sec, the world's fastest time so far this year.
He felt Saturday's display was 'a bit messy, I didn't hit all the hurdles very good'.
'Still, I managed to get a very decent time so that was nice -- but it also shows that there's more to do,' said Warholm, who won silver at Paris last year.
In the men's 400m, Paris gold medallist Quincy Hall was well off the pace, finishing in eighth place in 45.99sec after coming back from injury.
Fellow American Christopher Bailey won in 44.17sec.
Another from the United States, Cordell Tinch, ran the fourth-fastest time ever in the men's 110m hurdles as he romped home in 12.87sec.

Simone Biles and Riley Gaines explosive feud explained as Danica Patrick weighs in: ‘Woke mind virus'

Danica Patrick has weighed in on Simone Biles and Riley Gaines' explosive feud. The 7-time Olympic gold medalist slammed the former swimmer in an X, formerly Twitter post over the weekend, calling her a 'sore loser.' She made the scathing remark in response to the 25-year-old's criticism of a Minnesota high school softball team's victory while being led by a trans pitcher. As the duo exchanged barbs on social media, former NASCAR driver Patrick took to social media to back Gaines. 'This issue has a shelf life. I truly believe common sense will prevail,' she said on Instagram Sunday. 'But until then, I am grateful for people like Riley Gaines who are making sure no one gets away with it. Not to mention the fact that she actually lived it,' the 43-year-old went on, adding, 'Defending men in women's sports is the woke mind virus and/or another issue that requires therapy. Either way, it is so irrational.' 'You're truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race. Straight up sore loser,' Biles told Gaines in response to the latter's anti-trans post. 'You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports.' 'Maybe a transgender category IN ALL sports!! But instead… You bully them… One things for sure is no one in sports is safe with you around!!!!!' the 28-year-old added in her tweet, which has amassed over 50 million views so far. In a separate tweet, Biles told Gaines to 'bully someone your own size, which would ironically be a male.' Gaines quickly fired back with, 'This is actually so disappointing. It's not my job or the job of any woman to figure out how to include men in our spaces.' 'You can uplift men stealing championships in women's sports with YOUR platform. Men don't belong in women's sports and I say that with my full chest.' The Gaines for Girls podcast host uncovered a 2017 tweet from Biles that read, 'ahhhh good thing guys don't compete against girls or he'd take all the gold medals !!' The former swimmer quipped, 'Oop don't you hate it when your past self completely undermines your current nonsensical argument? How has 2025 Simone reconciled with the fact 2017 Simone was a 'truly sick bully' by her own standard?'

Which Team Will Win WTC 2025 If South Africa Vs Australia Final Ends In A Draw?

Last Updated: The 2025 WTC final between South Africa and Australia will be played at Lord's from June 11 to 15. South Africa will face Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final. The high-voltage match between the two top teams of the WTC 2023-25 cycle is set to take place at Lord's in London from June 11 to 15. The Proteas are coming into the final after topping the WTC 2023-25 points table and winning seven matches in a row, whereas defending champions Australia have won five of their last six Test matches. The Baggy Greens would like to get the better of Temba Bavuma & Co. in the one-off match to become WTC winners for the second time in history. However, it's not going to be an easy task, as the Proteas are also coming fully prepared for the big match. The WTC 2025 final between South Africa and Australia promises to be a nail-biting contest at the Home of Cricket, and it will be too early to predict which team is going to win the title. In Test cricket, three results are always possible, and so the question arises: which team will win WTC 2025 if the final ends in a draw? Well, according to tournament rules, if the WTC 2025 final ends in a draw or tie or gets abandoned, then Australia and South Africa will have to share the WTC trophy. However, to reduce the possibility of a draw, the match has a reserve day in place. But reserve day will only come into play if time has been lost to bad weather across the five days and they are unable to make up for it in those five days and no result has been reached by the end of the fifth day. WTC 2025 winners' prize money According to ICC, the winner of the WTC 2025 final will take home US $3.6 million, which is more than double what Australia received as WTC winners in 2023. The 2025 runners-up will take home $2.1 million this time, compared to $800,000 in the last two editions. Squads Australia: Pat Cummins (C), Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Travis Head, Alex Carey, Josh Inglis, Cameron Green, Beau Webster, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Scott Boland, Nathan Lyon, Matt Kuhnemann. Travelling reserve: Brendan Doggett South Africa: Temba Bavuma (C), Tony de Zorzi, Ryan Rickelton, Aiden Markram, David Bedingham, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne, Wiaan Mulder, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Dane Paterson, Keshav Maharaj, Senuran Muthusamy First Published: June 09, 2025, 23:59 IST News cricket Which Team Will Win WTC 2025 If South Africa Vs Australia Final Ends In A Draw?

Wasteful India Concede Late Goal, Lose 2-3 To Netherlands In FIH Pro League

A wasteful Indian men's hockey yet again conceded a late goal to lose 2-3 against the Olympic champions Netherlands, enduring their second consecutive defeat in the European leg of the FIH Pro League here on Monday. For India, Abhishek, playing his 100th match, scored in 20th minute, while Jugraj Singh converted his team's ninth penalty corner in 54th minute. The Netherlands scored through Thijs van Dam (24th), Tjep Hoedemakers (33rd) and Jip Janssen (57th). India had earlier lost 1-2 against the Netherlands on Saturday. India started on the front foot in the first quarter with as many as nine circle penetrations, but the goals eluded the visitors. India had the first chance of the match in the sixth minute but Abhishek's shot went wide. Soon, Shilanand Lakra snatched the ball in the midfield and raced his way into the Dutch circle only to shoot wide. Tjep Hoedemakers got the first scoring opportunity for the Dutchmen but his reverse hit from a tight angle was off the target. Minutes later, Hoedemakers got another chance but his deflection went wide. The Indians secured the first penalty corner of the match in the 18th but the Dutch defended well to deny India skipper Harmanpreet Singh. But two minutes later, Abhishek handed India the lead with a fierce shot to the top of the Dutch goal after being set up by Lakra. India's joy, however, was shortlived as four minutes later Thijs van Dam found himself at the right place at the right time to level the scores after the ball, from Thierry Brinkman's pass, hit an Indian stick and popped up in front of the goal. The Dutch dominated the early exchanges after the change of ends and took the lead three minutes into the third quarter through Hoedemakers, who neatly deflected in Derck de Vilder's pass. Minutes later, Netherlands got their first penalty corner but the effort went wide. Thereafter it was all India as they secured as many as six penalty corners in quick succession but Harmanpreet and Jugraj Singh failed to convert any of them. The Indians were guilty of wasting chances, converting just one of the nine penalty corners they secured in the match. Towards the end of the third quarter, India got as many as five penalty corners in quick succession but Harmanpreet and Jugraj failed to breach the Dutch defence. In the 54th minute India got two more penalty corners, the second of which was converted by Jugraj to level the scores. But as has often been the case, the Indians conceded another late goal when Janssen converted the Netherlands' second penalty corner three minutes from the hooter to seal the match. India will next play Argentina here on Wednesday.
