Bengal Governor Bose discharged from hospital after 23 days
Kolkata: West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose was discharged from a private hospital in Kolkata on Thursday morning after undergoing treatment there for 23 days.
He was admitted to the hospital following symptoms of heart blockage on April 23.
The governor's office informed that following the treatment, he recovered completely and was discharged.
The health condition of the governor is stable, his office informed.
"We are pleased to inform that the Honourable Governor of West Bengal, Dr C V Ananda Bose, has returned to Raj Bhavan after a brief period of medical care and rest at the hospital. We are happy to share that the Honourable Governor is now in good health and high spirits. We extend our sincere gratitude to all those who expressed their concern and conveyed their good wishes during this time. Your continued support and prayers are been highly appreciated," a statement issued by the Governor's office read.
The Governor complained of uneasiness days after his return to Kolkata from the minority-dominated district of Murshidabad to review the situation there amid the communal tension and violence in several pockets of the district last month against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill.
However, he also submitted a report to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs based on his findings at Murshidabad. In that report, he said the West Bengal government had failed to curb communal violence.
In the report, the Governor reportedly highlighted the shortcomings in the police infrastructure in West Bengal, a shortage of manpower, and an inadequately equipped police force.
In his report, the Governor pointed out that because of these lapses, the necessity of deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in a crisis like that of Murshidabad strife was often prompted.
He also called for the setting up of CAPF camps in sensitive areas, especially the minority-dominated and Bangladesh-bordering Murshidabad and Malda districts.
Most importantly, he had suggested that the Union Government consider the use of provisions under Article 356 (President's rule), if necessary, to maintain the law and order situation.

'We Want to Be Your Partner': Yunus Urges Stronger Bangladesh-China Ties Amid India Tensions
Last Updated: Yunus added that these efforts aim to attract foreign direct investment, stimulate economic growth, and generate employment opportunities for the country's youth. Bangladesh Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Monday said that large-scale Chinese investment in Bangladesh can be a game changer for the country's economy, reported Bangladeshi news website The Daily Star. 'Chinese companies are the masters of manufacturing in the globe, and we want to be your partner," Yunus said while inaugurating the China-Bangladesh Conference on Trade and Investment, reported the news website. The daylong event was organized by the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) with assistance from the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) and the Chinese government at the BIDA office in Dhaka. China's Commerce Minister Wang Wentao attended the event as a special guest. During the event, Yunus also highlighted that tens of millions of young Bangladeshis are eager for meaningful employment to showcase their skills. 'Bangladesh stands on the cusp of a transformative era. Our interim government has been steadfast with implementing reforms aimed at enhancing the investment climate, streamlining regulatory frameworks, and ensuring a conducive environment for business operations," Yunus said, The Daily Star mentioned. Yunus added that these efforts aim to attract foreign direct investment, stimulate economic growth, and generate employment opportunities for the country's youth. He described the conference as a historic occasion for Bangladesh, particularly as this year marks the 50th anniversary of the enduring friendship between Bangladesh and China. During the event, Bangladesh chief adviser emphasized the need to build a future that aspires to reach new heights, highlighting the shared potential of Bangladesh and China. He also mentioned that during his recent visit to Beijing, he had encouraged Chinese President Xi Jinping to support greater investment from Chinese companies in Bangladesh, expressing gratitude for the president's commitment. Recent Strain With India In recent months, India-Bangladesh relations have experienced significant strain, particularly following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. The interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has pursued a foreign policy that appears to distance itself from New Delhi, fostering closer ties with Beijing and Islamabad. This shift has been marked by a series of reciprocal trade restrictions, including India's imposition of port curbs on Bangladeshi imports such as readymade garments and processed foods, in response to similar measures from Dhaka. Additionally, the cancellation of a $21 million defense contract by Bangladesh with India's state-owned Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd has further exacerbated tensions. Bengal: Cabinet nod to add 76 more castes to OBC list, make Farakka a subdivision
The West Bengal Cabinet on Monday gave approval to include 76 new castes to the Other Backward Class (OBC) list and make Murshidabad district's Farakka a new subdivision, an official said. The new castes would be added to the existing 64 ethnic groups on the OBC list, the official said. The recommendations to add more castes to the OBC list were made by the West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes (WBCBC). The new subdivision of Farakka will comprise Farakka, Shamsherganj, Suti-1 and Suti-2 blocks which earlier were part of the Jangipur subdivision. 'Due to the growing population, the Jangipur subdivision authorities were facing difficulties in executing administrative work in the vast area. Hence, the decision was taken,' the official said. During the Cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat, approval was given to create 109 contract-based posts at various administrative levels for the new subdivision, he added. Banerjee, during her recent visit to the riot-hit areas of Murshidabad district, had announced the formation of the new subdivision. On April 12, one Harogobindo Das and his son Chandan Das were stabbed to death in their home in Shamsherganj's Jafrabad locality amid the ongoing communal unrest in the wake of the protests against the new Waqf law. A Muslim youth had also died in police firing the same day. The Cabinet also approved the creation of 336 posts and filling up the vacancies in the departments of home, health, finance, law, and municipal affairs, the official added. The CM also reprimanded Transport Minister Snehashish Chakraborty for not informing her about a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between World Bank and State Transport Department recently. The Chief Minister's Office must give green light before any MoU or proposal is signed, she told Chakraborty. — PTI inputs

Govt to launch Umeed portal on June 6 to digitise, regulate Waqf properties
The central government is preparing to roll out a new platform called the 'Umeed' portal on June 6, aimed at improving the management and transparency of Waqf properties across India, according to a report by India Today. The name 'Umeed' stands for Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development. The portal will serve as a centralised system to register all Waqf properties across the country, the report added. Mandatory registration within six months Under the new plan, all Waqf properties must be registered on the portal within six months of its launch. Each registration must include full details such as measurements (length and width) and geotagged locations. Properties that are registered under women's names will not be eligible to be classified as Waqf properties. However, women, children, and people from economically weaker sections will continue to be key beneficiaries of Waqf assets. The State Waqf Boards will be responsible for helping with property registrations. If technical or serious issues prevent registration within the deadline, a one- to two-month extension may be granted. After that, any unregistered property will be labelled as disputed and referred to the Waqf Tribunal for settlement. Linked to New Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 The launch comes soon after the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which received presidential assent from President Droupadi Murmu on 5 April. The Bill was passed by both Houses of Parliament after considerable debate. Currently, multiple petitions challenging the Waqf Act are pending before the Supreme Court. The central government has asked the court to dismiss these petitions, arguing that the Act is not in violation of constitutional rights. On April 17, the Supreme Court refused to stay the law after the government promised not to enforce some provisions for now. In the most recent hearing on 27 May, the court asked the Centre and other parties to submit their responses. What is Waqf Law? The term 'waqf' comes from the Arabic word waqufa, meaning to detain, hold, or tie up. In Islamic tradition, it refers to a charitable endowment where property is donated permanently for religious or charitable purposes. Once declared as Waqf, the property cannot be sold, inherited, or transferred. A Waqf involves three main roles: The wāqif: the person who donates or dedicates the property. The mawqūf 'alayh: the beneficiaries who receive the support or benefits. The mutawalli: the trustee who manages the property. Major changes in the new law The new Waqf law introduces major reforms in how such properties are managed. It increases government oversight in both managing the assets and handling disputes. A key change is that the decisions of the Waqf Tribunal will no longer be final. Those unhappy with the tribunal's ruling can now appeal directly to the relevant high court within 90 days. This is intended to strengthen judicial supervision and prevent misuse of power by the Waqf Boards or tribunals. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill was approved in the Lok Sabha after a 12-hour debate. A total of 288 members voted in favour, while 232 opposed it. During the discussions, the NDA government supported the Bill, calling it beneficial for minority communities, while the opposition labelled it as 'anti-Muslim'. All amendments proposed by the opposition were rejected by voice votes.
