The New York Knicks delivered their first Eastern Conference Finals run since 2000. And pulled it off without needing a megastar like Kevin Durant. However, the Phoenix Suns star came close to joining the Knicks per a new bombshell report Thursday.

ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania dropped some stunning league intel before Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Here's what Charania shared.
'The Knicks made an offer for Kevin Durant at the NBA trade deadline,' Charania said. 'There was some mutual interest.'
Obviously the trade never took place. The Knicks rolled deep into the NBA playoffs off Jalen Brunson, Karl Anthony-Towns, plus Mikal Bridges and company. Charania also didn't elaborate on who from NYK would've been included in a potential Durant deal.

The Knicks are now undergoing a sudden transition period. Tom Thibodeau is out as head coach, as the Knicks fired him Tuesday. The decision to remove 'Thibs' comes following the ECF appearance.

New York must find an attractable replacement for Thibodeau — who reinvented the Knicks as a playoff contender. But will New York re-pursue the trade market? Including for Durant?
'We'll see what happens in the next couple of weeks. Now do you go after a landmark player?' Charania asked. 'Do they go star hunting?'
Charania isn't ruling out changes being made.
'At the bare minimum, they're going to have to add some more depth. That's going to be the requirement of this team,' Charania explained.
Sounds like Durant-to-New York isn't out of the woods yet. But the franchise must find their next head coach. Names are already sprouting, including some surprises.

NBA champion Metta World Peace is one making his sales pitch. The Queensbridge, New York native expressed interest in the gig. Jason Kidd and Ime Udoka are two more linked to the opening. Even another NBA champion guard in Rajon Rondo was mentioned as a possibility. Former Denver Nuggets head coach and current ESPN analyst Mike Malone is also available. Malone led the Nuggets to their only NBA title in the 2023 season.

Coming into the night, the Bulls had just a 1.7% chance of landing the first overall pick. Expectations weren't high, but it was a little bit painful when the Dallas Mavericks, who had a 1.8% chance, did end up landing the first pick. To make matters worse, the Mavericks won a coin toss with the Bulls to move up. If that coin flipped the other way, the Bulls could have had the first overall pick. Advertisement Landing Cooper Flagg would completely change the outlook for the Bulls, but alas, the team received the 12th overall pick. Chicago will still be able to land an incredibly talented player with that pick, but that player won't be Flagg. The Bulls have lost in the NBA play-in tournament three years in a row now, and the fan base is desperate for change. The team has been hesistant to make any big moves or tank for a better draft pick, so Chicago has been stuck in an unfortunate middleground. Adding more young talent will certainly help speed up the process, so this 12th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft is a big one. There is a little a little under three week before the 2025 NBA Draft as it will take place on June 25th from the Barclays Center in New York. The Bulls have some time to scout their options, and here is an ideal outcome for Chicago with the 12th overall pick in the NBA Draft: Ideal outcome for Bulls in NBA Draft There are a couple of different things that go into the Bulls achieving the best-case scenario in the NBA Draft, and one of them doesn't have anything to do with the actual draft. It has to do with an offseason trade that needs to go down. Advertisement First, when the NBA Draft rolls around, the Bulls need to take Maryland center Derik Queen if he is available at #12. When the NBA Draft process started, it didn't seem likely that Queen would still be available at #12. However, Queen is starting to slide down the draft board a bit, and it's looking like he could be available. ClutchPoints' NBA insider Brett Siegel has Queen at #13 on his big board: 'Derik Queen has seen his draft stock slip slightly during the pre-draft process due to some concerns about his shot-making abilities,' Siegel wrote. 'Although he is still one of the best frontcourt players available in this year's draft, Queen's form and scoring mentality will need to be worked on. There is a real possibility that Queen becomes this year's Dalton Knecht in the sense that he falls out of the lottery and is on the board in the middle of the first round. Expect there to be teams showing interest in trading up for Queen should this happen, as his stature and rebounding abilities in the paint can help impact winning while he develops a more consistent offensive approach.' While Queen's stock is falling, he still has an incredibly high ceiling because of his size and athleticism. He needs to work on his shooting, but other than that, he is a very polished prospect and can still find other ways to score. It might be tricky to find a player with better potential at #12. The other thing that goes into this scenario is the Bulls trading Nikola Vucevic. This is expected to happen, and it needs to happen. Vucevic is a much better shooter than Derik Queen, so that aspect of his game would be missed in this scenario, but Vucevic doesn't fit into the young core and style that Chicago is going for. 'White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf, 89, erased all of the speculation that the White Sox would be up for sale any time soon, but does have a succession plan in place beginning in 2029, or perhaps even 2034 when he will turn 98 years old,' USA Today's Bob Nightengale wrote. 'Reinsdorf, who has been hounded by minority owner Justin Ishbia for years to sell controlling interest of the club, finally agreed to potentially sell it to him beginning in 2029, but not a single day earlier. If Reinsdorf or his family still own[s] the team in 2034, Ishbia has the right to purchase the club without Reinsdorf's approval. In exchange, Ishbia is contributing capital this year and in 2026. The Bulls finished another disappointing season back in April, which didn't leave the door open for a top draft pick. So, the team will likely try to revamp its roster with trades this offseason. Nikola Vucevic, Coby White and Lonzo Ball are all key players from last year's team that could be involved. Advertisement Because of his contract, Lonzo Ball is a popular trade candidate for the Bulls. He has been at the forefront of trade rumors in the past, but he reached a deal with the team ahead of the trade deadline back in February. It was a two-year, $20 million deal, but only the first year is guaranteed. 'As soon as he signed that contract, he was up for trade, because that contract is so trade-friendly,' Bulls insider Joe Cowley said on Wednesday. 'It's basically a one year, $10 million deal. The team has the option for the next 10 million for year number two.' Ball isn't the only trade candidate as everyone expects Nikola Vucevic to be traded this offseason. Because of the Bulls' desire to remain competitive (which has resulted in three straight play-in tournament exits), they are stuck in an awkward middleground that has shown no signs of ending. 'It's not only Lonzo up for trade, Vooch (Nikola Vucevic) is up for trade,' Cowley continued. 'I mean, the Bulls are trying to change this roster over, and again, talk about walking a fine line and a tight rope, they're trying to do so while still trying to be competitive for some ungodly reason. That's the path that they continue to choose. So enjoy late lottery picks every year.' Advertisement Lonzo Ball and Nikola Vucevic are two key players that might get traded this offseason, but Josh Giddey is someone that the Bulls are liklely going to re-sign. 'I think we all wrote when Lonzo signed that deal on the, I believe, was the night of the trade deadline in Minnesota, we all wrote that, basically, this deal was signed to be a trade candidate,' Cowley said. 'I mean, Lonzo spun it as he wanted to stay here. He wanted to stay close to Dr. Cole. But look, everything is on the table for the Bulls this off season. Vooch, Lonzo, a package of those two, whatever they can do to try and add to this mix that they're trying to build on the run, as well as resigning Josh Giddey, that's going to be coming shortly too.' As you can see, the Bulls have big decisions to make surrounding a lot of their top players. This is another crucial offseason for the team, and it has to be a good one as the fan base grew tired of the on-court product a long time ago.
