Women in Tiruchy flag issues in pink bus services
TIRUCHY: Despite the Tamil Nadu government's flagship Magalir Vidiyal Payanam scheme offering free bus services for women, many female commuters in Tiruchy are facing issues, with many free town buses allegedly skipping designated stops, forcing them to endure long waits or shell out for private transport.
The scheme, which sees around 2.98 lakh women utilise free buses daily in Tiruchy, was launched to empower women through financial savings and safe travel. To date, 36.6 crore women have reportedly benefited from the service in the district. However, recent months have seen a surge in complaints regarding the inconsistent operation of the free buses.
Women commuters highlight discrepancies between the scheme's promise and its reality. Crucial stops such as Anna Statue, Main Guard gate, Marakadai, Thillainagar, MGMGH, Mahalakshmi Nagar, Kattur, Railway Junction, Srirangam, Jeeyapuram, Vayalur, E Pudur, KK Nagar, and even the Airport are being bypassed. This issue is particularly prevalent during rush hours and late evenings, disproportionately affecting women from low-income families who rely on the free services to save money.
'I work in a shop in Thillainagar. Buses often skip the stops at Thennur and Marakkadai during peak hours. I used to take the free bus home, but now I take a private bus and spend Rs 25 every day. It has affected my savings, said C Lakshmi, a commuter from Beema Nagar.

6.8L women under Lakshmir Bhandar getting pension
1 2 3 Kolkata: More than 6.8 lakh women who had crossed the age of 60 were now receiving old age pensions under Bengal govt's Lakshmir Bhandar scheme, state minister for women, child development and social welfare Shashi Panja informed the assembly on Friday. Women getting financial assistance under the scheme automatically receive the same amount as old age pension on turning 60. Govt had so far disbursed Rs 63,615 crore to 2.2 crore beneficiaries under Lakshmir Bhandar, the minister said. Hold Yoga Day events at historical sites: UP chief secretary
Lucknow: Chief secretary Manoj Kumar Singh reviewed arrangements for World Yoga Day on Friday. Programmes related to the event will be held across the state from June 15 to 21. The CS said that this year's theme for Yoga Day is 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health'. Under this, a Yoga Week will be organised from June 15 to 21. The inauguration ceremony of Yoga Week will be held on June 15 at all district headquarters, tehsil, block, and village panchayat levels. "Preparations for its organisation should be ensured in a timely manner. Sites of cultural and historical significance in the district should be selected for yoga practice. Information on yoga practice should be uploaded daily on the portal with photos. All competitions should be conducted transparently and impartially," the CS said. Principal secretary, AYUSH, Ranjan Kumar informed the CS that competitions are being organised at the district and state level on Yoga Day. These include essay, slogan, yoga painting, and yoga asana competitions. The AYUSH department has prepared a portal to allow people to participate in the competitions. Collector honoured for supporting ex-servicemen welfare
Bhopal: Bhopal collector Kaushlendra Vikram Singh was presented with a citation and a memento on behalf of governor Mangubhai Patel. This recognition was for the welfare programmes being run for the families of martyred soldiers and ex-servicemen, as well as for collecting funds for the Armed Forces Flag Fund, exceeding the target given to Bhopal district. Retired Colonel Rajiv Khatri presented the citation and the memento to the collector on behalf of the governor. An amount of Rs 15,08,081 was collected against the target of Rs 13,51,900 by Bhopal district in the year 2024-25 for the welfare of ex-servicemen and the families of martyred soldiers.
