Round 13 of South American qualifying for the FIFA 2026 World Cup included mouth-watering fixtures like Uruguay vs Argentina and Brazil vs Colombia. The World Champions made huge strides towards the next tournament and there were also important victories for the likes of Ecuador and Peru.

Argentina may have been missing Lionel Messi but that didn't stop the team claiming three points against neighbours Uruguay on Friday night. The Estadio Centenario is a hostile place for any national side to visit but Argentina grew into the game and was able to take home a valuable victory; leaving them one match away from official World Cup qualification.
This game included some huge tackles, plenty of passion and there was absolutely no love lost between both sets of players. However Argentina would take the tie by the scruff of the neck in the second period, and as the game opened up the Qatar 2022 World Cup winners looked by far the more likely side to score.
Julián Alvarez led the line brilliantly and almost carved open Uruguay with some majestic passes. He provided the assist for the only goal of the game but it was a simple ball in the end. The rest of the magic was worked by scorer Thiago Almada; who whipped the ball into the top corner of the net from outside the box. It was a stunning strike from a fine young talent, worth winning any game.

Peru defeated Bolivia on Thursday night in Lima to earn just a second victory in 13 rounds of FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifying matches. The win moves Peru just three points behind their visitors who currently hold on to a crucial World Cup play-off spot.
An away victory would have doomed Peru completely but now the race to qualify, for that play-off spot at least, is back on. Three goals on the night was as many as this Peru team could manage in their previous 12 qualifiers, so the home spectators surely got a welcome surprise in Lima on this occasion.
On the other hand, Bolivia has now conceded 30 goals in 13 league games, more than double the goals conceded by any other team. Yet, Bolivia has a home advantage so strong that the team might still be the favourite to earn a World Cup play-off spot.

As Peru moved off the bottom spot Chile sank below them in the table after a 1-0 defeat in Paraguay. The visitors' woes were compounded by a second-half goal from centre-back Omar Alderete, who also scored in the home victory against Argentina late last year.
Paraguay is in dreamland though. This win means that the team moves into fifth in the table and sits a comfortable seven points clear of Bolivia in the play-off spot. A fantastic run of form has propelled the Paraguayans towards a first World Cup finals place since 2010, when historically they made it all the way to the quarter-finals for the first and only time.

Ecuador captain Enner Valencia bagged a brace to send his nation into second place in the South American FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifying table. Ecuador dominated the ball and made it five wins and two draws in seven home games during this campaign. After leaders Argentina it's fair to say that Ecuador has outperformed any other side in South American qualifying so far. They also have the best defensive record of all.
For Venezuela this loss makes it seven away games without a single victory in the campaign. Their impressive start has completely faded and recent results have been poor. Luckily, Venezuela is only one point off the World Cup play-off spot and can bounce back in the next fixture at home to Peru.

A calamitous fifth-minute own goal from Hector Cuellar and a 30th-minute strike from veteran forward Salomon Rondon ensured the three points for the Vinotinto in Maturin. New international soccer tournament coming to Toronto ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup
Four countries are bringing their national soccer teams to Toronto this weekend for the final major tournament the city will host before it takes on several World Cup games next year. The Canadian Shield Tournament kicks off at BMO Field on Saturday and features four national men's soccer teams — Canada, Ukraine, New Zealand and Ivory Coast. The tournament is meant to prepare the teams for next year's FIFA World Cup, according to Canada Soccer. Canada's head coach Jesse Marsch said his team is excited for the challenge that comes with taking on these strong opponents. "It's a chance for all of us to competitively make sure that our teams are making steps forward and it will be, I think, a great experience for the fans [in] anticipation of what the World Cup will be next summer," Marsch said at a news conference on Friday. Canada's team is also set to receive a new addition, as Toronto FC's captain Jonathan Osorio will be joining their roster, according to a Canada Soccer news release Thursday. The inaugural match takes place Saturday at 3:30 p.m., with Canada facing off against Ukraine. The second match of the day will be played between New Zealand and Ivory Coast. The rest of the matches will take place on Tuesday. "We are fixed now on the very difficult match we have tomorrow, but looking ahead to Tuesday, we know that we will need to use a real breadth of our squad for both matches because both will be physically demanding and also tactically demanding," Marsch said. The tournament is a chance for soccer fans to watch some of the best players from around the world battle it out, but it's also an opportunity for the city to show its ability to run a major tournament — and manage any potential challenges that may come with it — before hosting six World Cup games next year. Fans attending this weekend's matches will get an early look at the almost $150-million upgrade BMO Field is set to receive ahead of the World Cup. Upgrades are already underway, and will ultimately include new video boards, luxury boxes and a rooftop patio. Temporary seating is also being added, increasing the stadium's capacity from close to 30,000 to 45,000, and bringing it up to FIFA World Cup standards. The current phase of renovations ends in August, with the second phase beginning in December and ending ahead of the first World Cup match next June. The city, which owns the field, and Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment, which manages it, are spending $123 million and $23 million respectively on the renovations. In 2022, FIFA awarded Toronto the right to host five first round games plus one playoff round match for the 2026 tournament. However, the city originally anticipated it would host just five World Cup matches, at an estimated cost of $300 million. The cost has since climbed to $380 million, about $200 million of which is being provided by the federal and provincial governments. Now the city is clamping down on FIFA spending unless it can find savings on its hosting duties or secure more money from other levels of government. "I looked at the numbers just briefly, but the security's pretty heavy there. The numbers I saw — like, it's massive. That's taking a big chunk out of it. So let's take a look at it," he said at a news conference on Friday.
