The Tesla Model Y has been named Australia's best mid-size electric SUV in the inaugural 2025 CarExpert Choice Awards.
It beat out the BYD Sealion 7 and Volkswagen ID.4 for the title.
The Model Y recently received a substantial update, significantly improving Australia's best-selling electric vehicle (EV).
Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now.
Far from a modest mid-cycle update, Tesla has done enough to make the Model Y look and feel substantially different, and keep it above the fray – and this is perhaps the most competitive segment in the Australian EV market today.
It still has the flashy technology but minimalist styling Tesla is known for, but the cabin is now a more appealing place to be and the ride is more comfortable.
If rivals had finally caught up to the pre-update Model Y, Tesla has moved the goalposts again.
2025 CarExpert Choice Best EV – Mid-Size SUV
Winner – Tesla Model Y
Finalist – BYD Sealion 7
Finalist – Volkswagen ID.4

2026 Toyota Corolla Cross price, spec details leaked

Key details of the updated 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross lineup, including pricing, has been leaked online. A dealer bulletin shared on the Toyota Corolla Cross Owners Australia group on Facebook reveals the entire lineup will receive a $960 price hike, while also detailing some of the spec changes coming to the small crossover SUV. Toyota has previously confirmed a local launch for the upgraded small SUV in the second half of 2025. We've contacted the company for an update. Per the bulletin, the Corolla Cross will arrive at dealerships in late July in both GX and Atmos trims, with the GXL and new GR-S trim (pictured below) arriving in early October. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. The bulletin mentions "production delays due to pending certification" for the GXL and GR-S, which were originally set to arrive alongside the rest of the range. The updated lineup will open at $37,440 before on-road costs for the base front-wheel drive GX, and top out at $50,990 before on-roads for both the all-wheel drive Atmos and GR-S. All variants get HF01234YF refrigerant for their air-conditioning systems and an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) to alert passersby to the hybrid SUV's presence. The front and rear Parking Support Brake function, which applies the brakes if it detects an object or vehicle and which was previously exclusive to the Atmos, is being rolled out to the GX and GXL. The GXL also picks up the following features from the Atmos: The Atmos gains ventilated front seats. There's also updated centre console trim for the GX, GXL and Atmos. The new GR-S (or GR Sport) variant revealed in May features unique front and rear bumpers, as well as lower sports suspension, retuned steering, and unique 19-inch alloy wheels. Ever since petrol-powered variants were dropped locally in 2024, all Australian-market Corolla Cross vehicles come with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder hybrid powertrain delivering 146kW of total system power. The wider range receives refreshed exterior styling including new LED headlight internals for the GXL and Atmos. Toyota may be the best-selling car brand in Australia by a country mile, but the Corolla Cross was only the seventh best-selling vehicle in its segment last year, behind the MG ZS, Hyundai Kona, GWM Haval Jolion, Mazda CX-30, Mitsubishi ASX and Subaru Crosstrek. Are we about to lose another V8 sports car?

The Lexus LC grand tourer is on the chopping block, according to a report from Japan. Following a recent report by Best Car Web claiming the LC and smaller RC would be replaced by a single model, fellow Japanese outlet Creative Trend has reported the LC will close out with a special Pinnacle edition for 2026. This appears to end the run of Lexus' long-running naturally aspirated 5.0-litre petrol V8 engine. Lexus this week revealed a Climax final edition of its IS500 sedan and a Final Edition of its RC F, the only other road cars that use this engine. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. Supplied Credit: CarExpert Creative Trend reports production of the LC500 and LC500h coupes and the LC500 convertible will end after the IS500, which will wrap up in November 2025. The Pinnacle edition of the LC500 coupe and convertible will reportedly be announced on Thursday, June 26, and be offered to customers on the Japanese market via a lottery system. Reportedly set to enter production in August 2025, the LC500 coupe will feature a matte silver exterior finish, a black-and-white interior, and 21-inch forged aluminium wheels with red brake calipers. Supplied Credit: CarExpert Other inclusions comprise a carbon-fibre rear spoiler and scuff plates, while inside there'll be a combination of semi-aniline leather and Alcantara trim. The convertible will reportedly be finished in Neutrino Grey paint with a sand beige roof and a saddle tan and white interior, and the same wheels, spoiler, brakes and scuff plates of the coupe. The outlet doesn't report any other changes for 2026, apart from a different brake caliper colour and some changes to colours. Supplied Credit: CarExpert That means the LC will miss out on recently introduced Lexus features such as a larger 14-inch infotainment touchscreen. Lexus last updated the LC in Australia in 2023, bringing a suite of connected services and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as an updated suite of active safety and driver assist features. As mentioned, a Best Car Web report pointed to the LC being replaced along with the RC (which was axed here in 2021 but lives on overseas) by a vehicle derived from the next-generation Toyota Supra. Supplied Credit: CarExpert There's been much speculation about the future of Lexus' flagship coupe. In 2021, Lexus appeared to tease a convertible resembling a next-generation LC (above, far left), while also revealing the Electrified Sport Concept (above, centre) that pointed to an electric successor. Subsequently, reports have pointed to an entirely different flagship for the Lexus lineup: a supercar called the LFR, powered by a twin-turbo V8, based on Toyota's GT3 GR concept car and serving as a spiritual successor to the iconic LFA. This vehicle has been spied testing and, while Lexus Australia hasn't confirmed whether the car will wear the 'L' badge, it has said it's excited to see the product. To the end of May, Lexus has delivered 29 LCs in Australia this year – more than the LS sedan (5) and almost as many as the RZ electric SUV (32). Supplied Credit: CarExpert Supplied Credit: CarExpert While a low-volume proposition, the LC still outsells the rival BMW 8 Series (13) and Mercedes-AMG SL (14). The LC entered production in 2017 as a flagship two-door for the Lexus lineup. Lexus had participated in this space before with the SC coupe, which was never sold here, and the SC430 convertible which was. The LC was launched around seven years after the SC430 was retired, and uses the 'L' prefix previously reserved for Lexus' flagship sedan (LS) and SUV (LX) but now confusingly seen on the entry-level LBX crossover SUV. Why the Nissan X-Trail is a CarExpert choice winner

The mid-size SUV segment is teeming with compelling options, so why did we choose the Nissan X-Trail as the best in our inaugural 2025 CarExpert Choice awards? Simple: it's an extremely capable all-rounder with all of the latest safety and tech features, and offers not only benchmark refinement and ride/handling but a wide range of configurations. You can get it with front- or all-wheel drive, five- or seven-seat configurations, petrol or hybrid power, and in multiple model grades. In short, there's something for everyone. 'The Nissan X-Trail stands out from the plethora of mid-size SUVs on the market with top-class refinement, safety and multimedia, plus great packaging, competitive pricing, a very long warranty and a unique range-extender hybrid powertrain that none of its many rivals can match,' explained managing editor Marton Pettendy. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. Here's what other members of the CarExpert team had to say about our pick for Best Affordable Mid-Size SUV: 'The latest Nissan X-Trail is a world away from its predecessor, and the new e-Power hybrid is my personal pick of the bunch,' said marketplace editor James Wong. 'Punchy yet refined performance from its electric motors, and improved fuel-efficiency bolster the X-Trail's strong suits which include a premium and practical cabin. 'In what is the most competitive new vehicle segment in Australia, the X-Trail e-Power stands out as a front-runner, and an easy recommendation to buyers.' 'The X-Trail is kind of at 'ol' faithful' status – it's been around a long time, it does the job well and you know what to expect with it,' said video producer Sean Lander. 'With this latest iteration, Nissan injected a lot of 'premium' into its trusty SUV, with even the lower-spec models getting nice exterior styling and a much-needed interior upgrade. 'Then there's the introduction of e-Power, Nissan's answer to Toyota's ever popular hybrids. e-Power is closer to an EV than a traditional hybrid, but it's a technology with a lot of promise – the smooth driveability of an EV with the range and ease of use of an internal combustion car. 'I spent six months behind the wheel of a Ti-L e-Power and I thoroughly enjoyed it (full story and video coming to CarExpert soon). Whilst there is some room for improvement with the system that will come with time and development, it's a good middle ground between what you're used to, and where cars are going. 'There may be vehicles in the segment with nicer interiors or more powerful drivetrains or more fuel-efficient engines, but the X-Trail does the best good job combining all three and, in doing so, deserves the award bestowed upon it.' 'In a segment full of unproven challengers, the X-Trail is a trustworthy mainstay that remains highly relevant thanks to recent upgrades,' said deputy marketplace editor Josh Nevett. 'The cabin is user-friendly and well-appointed, there's plenty of room for a growing family, and the e-Power hybrid system combines the quiet refinement of electric mobility with the flexibility of internal combustion power. 'Unlike many rivals, the X-Trail is a proper all-rounder that doesn't force buyers to compromise, and that counts for a lot when you're shopping for a vehicle that'll likely be exposed to the daily commute, school run, and weekend road trips.' 'The X-Trail formula is hard to argue against. It's one of the Japanese brand's best-known nameplates, and is still high on buyers' wish lists despite a flood of new competition and stubborn stalwarts,' said marketplace journalist Max Davies. 'It may not be as modern as some of the others, but that means you get simpler tech that's easier to live with. There's a certain rugged dependability to the X-Trail too, a characteristic Nissan played into with the reintroduction of the rugged-looking N-Trek in recent years. 'The SUV received some minor updates heading into 2025, namely a larger touchscreen infotainment system and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. These elevated the cabin, which was already a nice place to spend time thanks to strong build quality and top-notch materials. 'Better yet, there's Nissan's clever e-Power powertrain available at the top of the range, which is a thoroughly competent system bringing fuel economy and driveability benefits. If that's too much to spend, there's plenty of value to be found across the range, which has a whopping 10 variants to choose from. 'There's a lot to like about the X-Trail, and it's undoubtedly capable of standing the test of time well into the later years of ownership.'
