Boca Juniors still in the mix at Club World Cup but may rue Benfica draw

CNA10 hours ago

MIAMI :Boca Juniors are still in the hunt for a place in the Club World Cup knockout rounds after their 2-2 draw with Benfica on Monday but their task would have been so much easier had they not squandered a two-goal lead against the Portuguese side.
Boca next face Group C favourites Bayern Munich, who thrashed Auckland City 10-0 in their opener, and the race to finish second behind the German champions could come down to goal difference.
While Boca were competitive and showed they deserve to share the stage with a strong side like Benfica coach Miguel Angel Russo believes there is still a gap between South American and European teams.
WHY IT'S IMPORTANT:
Thousands of hardcore Boca Juniors fans are bringing extreme passion to the tournament and should the team exit before the knockout stages it would deal a heavy blow to the atmosphere at the event.
On Monday, Boca Juniors fans turned the Hard Rock Stadium into a sea of blue and gold.
KEY QUOTES:
Boca Juniors captain Miguel Merentiel: "It's a strange feeling, to be honest. It leaves a bit of a bitter taste, and now it's about moving forward. Now, we'll focus on believing in ourselves, in our own tools, and we'll come out in the next match to give our best."
Boca Juniors coach Russo: "Benfica suffered at times ... because Boca played a game they weren't expecting.
"I think, at least for us Argentines, the gap is still very big with European teams. Maybe someday it'll close but not yet. We have to keep working, fighting, looking for ways."
Benfica coach Bruno Lage: "We started the game well, we were the better team but we conceded two goals and it's difficult to accept.
"Our first goal was important, then we made more runs into the box and we could have won the game."

Salernitana-Samp playoff decider moved back after food poisoning

ROME :The Italian Serie B relegation decider has been postponed to Sunday after many Salernitana players suffered food poisoning on the way home from the first leg against Sampdoria. The Serie B league said it had accepted a request from Salernitana to delay the return game which had been scheduled to take place on Friday. The decision was made after considering medical documents produced by the club, as well a criminal complaint Salernitana filed with prosecutors, the league said in a statement. Around 20 players and staff fell ill on the plane taking Salernitana home to Salerno after Sunday's 2-0 loss to Sampdoria in Genoa in the playoff first leg. Salernitana face the prospect of a second consecutive relegation if they cannot overturn their deficit. Former Serie A champions Sampdoria are fighting to avoid a humiliating fall into Serie C for the first time in their 79-year history. The Genoa club were going down at the end of the regular season in May, but were given a lifeline when Brescia were relegated in their place due to financial irregularities.

Olympic gold in LA is Djokovic's new obsession

Novak Djokovic says that defending his Olympic title at LA 2028 - when he would be 41 years old - has become his primary motivation to continue competing, marking a significant shift in priorities for the 24-times Grand Slam champion. "The only thing that at this moment, professionally speaking, I have in my vision is the Olympics of 2028 in Los Angeles," Djokovic told former Croatia football international and manager Slaven Bilic in an interview published on "And playing for the national team and Grand Slams... but not even the Grand Slams, not as much as the Olympics." The 38-year-old Serbian's Paris 2024 victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the final completed his collection of every major accolade in tennis, including all four Grand Slam titles, the Davis Cup, ATP Finals and every Masters event - a career "Golden Slam" that had eluded him until that point. If successful in Los Angeles, Djokovic - currently ranked fifth in the world - would join Britain's Andy Murray as the only players to defend an Olympic singles title.

Atmosphere for Chelsea's Club World Cup opener a bit strange, says Maresca

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said the atmosphere at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta was "a bit strange" as his side began their Club World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over Los Angeles FC in front of swathes of empty seats. The multi-purpose stadium has a 71,000 capacity but Monday's group stage match, which kicked-off at 3 p.m., attracted little over 22,000 spectators. Atlanta is over 2,000 miles (3,220 km) away from Los Angeles, where Major League Soccer club LAFC are based. "It was a good match, a good performance," Maresca told reporters. "I think the environment was a bit strange. The stadium was almost empty. Not full." The Italian expected more fans to be in attendance when they take on Brazilian side Flamengo at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Friday. "We prepared for this game also thinking that the environment was a bit different," Maresca said. "But no doubt that the next one will be a nice one because we know that the Brazilian team, they always bring many, many fans. So we will try to be ready for the next one." Maresca was asked about what impact he expects from forward Liam Delap, who joined the club for around 30 million pounds from Ipswich Town ($40.73 million) on a six-year deal. Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku and Marc Guiu are already options for the number nine shirt at Chelsea but the 22-year-old Englishman wasted no time in showcasing his potential, setting up Enzo Fernandez for their second goal on Monday. "I am curious to see how Nico reacts (to Delap)," said Maresca. "He competed with Guiu, who is very young, during the season. They are both good number nines." Chelsea are level with Flamengo at the top of the group after the Brazilians beat Esperance de Tunis 2-0.
