CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Andreas Schjelderup scored in the 13th minute to give Benfica a 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich in scorching heat on Tuesday, sending the Portuguese club to the top of Group C in the Club World Cup.
The loss dropped Bayern Munich to second place as Boca Juniors was eliminated.
The game was played in a 97 degree temperature (36 Celsius). Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni was attended by the medical staff in the 25th minute due to heat-related issues and was replaced in the 55th.
Schjelderup ran onto a cross from Fredrik Aursnes and scored with a right-footed shot from near the penalty spot.
Bayern's Joshua Kimmich put the ball in the net in the 61st minute but the goal was disallowed because Harry Kane was in an offside position in the line of sight of goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin.
Bayern lost its first match loss of the tournament as it struggled to find a rhythm ahead of the knockout stages later this week, despite a late attacking effort including a disallowed goal. Key moment
Schjelderup's early goal changed the dynamic. Though insufficient, Bayern made an attacking effort that fell short against Benfica's organized defense, leaving the German champions unable to find an equalizer despite increased pressure in the second half. Key stat
Bayern started only four of players from the starting lineup in Friday's win over Boca Juniors and introduced all five substitutes at the start of the second half: Kane, Kimmich, Konrad Laimer, Michael Olise and Jonathan Tah. What they said
'Opponents play tough .... In the end when the goalkeeper is the man of the match, then you did not do everything wrong.' — Thomas Muller of Bayern Munich.
'It's an important victory. We played a great game, especially in the first half. In the second half, it was obviously more difficult but we knew how to suffer.' — Nedim Bajrami of Benfica.

FIFA Club World Cup: How to watch Fluminense vs Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday

Brazil's Fluminense and South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns will battle for a spot in the Club World Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday, and each team enters the game with a chance to finish as the Group F winner. Fluminense will qualify with a win or a draw. Should Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense both win, the top spot will be decided on goal difference, and Fluminense enters the day with a one-goal advantage. If Fluminense lose, they can only advance if Dortmund also loses, but it will come down to goal difference. Mamelodi Sundowns must win to advance, as Dortmund holds the head-to-head tiebreaker and would advance if Mamelodi draws. The Club World Cup is using an expanded format for the first time in 2025, with 32 teams from across the world split into eight groups of four teams each. European powerhouses like Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea will be taking on winners of previous competitions across CONCACAF, Africa, Asia and South America. FIFA Club World Cup: How to watch Borussia Dortmund vs Ulsan Hyundai on Wednesday

Group F will come to an exciting conclusion in the Club World Cup on Wednesday, with three impressive teams vying for two spots in the round of 16. Borussia Dortmund will go through with a win or a draw, which is expected against winless Ulsan Hyundai. Should Dortmund win, a loss or draw by Fluminense would give Dortmund the top spot, but there are still chances for Dortmund to advance even with a loss against the Korean side, as they hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over Mamelodi Sundowns. Bayern Munich's Leon Goretzka prepared for next challenge, even if it's not in Germany

Leon Goretzka has logged more than 1,300 minutes in ten consecutive Bundesliga seasons. The last seven campaigns have occurred at Bayern Munich, winning six Meisterschalen and the coveted Champions League final in 2020. Unfortunately, Goretzka's consistency and efforts have not always been appreciated by the decision makers at Säbener Straße. Goretzka knows that he could be transferred at any moment, although his €13M salary and desire to stay in Munich is a high barrier for potential suitors. Advertisement With his contract expiring in 2026 at the age of 31, Goretzka understands that he may not be able to finish out his career in the Bundesliga. 'Physically, I don't feel at all like I'm approaching the end of my career,' said Goretzka (via @iMiaSanMia). 'In fact, I feel fitter than ever before. I hopefully still have a few years ahead of me, so I wouldn't rule [a move abroad] out. But it's not an urgent topic.' Goretzka's relentless work ethic has endeared him to the Bayern faithful. If this is his last year with the club, he wants to go out with a bang and another trophy (or three). Looking for some thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich signing of Bayer Leverkusen center-back Jonathan Tah? What about a discussion on what is going on with Leroy Sané and how likely he is to join Arsenal FC or Tottenham Hotspur? FInally, we hit on the Champions League finale in Munich and how the trickle-down effect of bad decisions from the past few years cost Bayern Munich the chance to play for the UCL crown at home.
