Emus might not be the ‘world's dumbest bird' after all
The insult 'bird brain' should probably be retired. Eurasian jays can pass the marshmallow test, some species have 'culture', and even extinct avians like the dodo were probably smarter than we previously thought. Large birds called palaeognaths–the closest living relatives of dinosaurs–are considered more simple. However, a small study found that some large birds are also capable of innovation. They can solve a physical task in order to access food, according to a study published February 20 in the journal Scientific Reports.
Palaeognaths include emus and ostriches, and can reach 9 feet tall and weigh upwards of 300 pounds. They are more known for their brawn than their brains and often rely on their running speed and kicking to defend themselves. Emus have been called the 'world's dumbest bird' for decades.
While we know that other birds are effective problem-solvers, not as much work has been done on other groups of avians.
'The more we study the same species repeatedly, the more we create an 'echo chamber' of knowledge and create a false impression that other species are less 'intelligent' but in reality they haven't been studied to the same level,' Fay Clark, a study co-author and a comparative experimental psychologist at the University of Bristol in the UK, said in a statement
For this new study, the team worked with three palaeognath species at Noah's Ark Zoo Farm in Bristol–emus, rheas, and ostriches. They designed the test to measure their ability to innovate, or 'the use of pre-existing behaviors in novel circumstances or invention of novel behaviors.' Testing innovation and its relationship with animal cognition is a common way for scientists to measure general intelligence.
Based on previous research, the team designed a rotating wheel that had to be moved in the right way to align with a hole to get a food reward. Each of the three species was given the test in 10 sessions.
The emus were able to line up a hole with a food chamber and moved the hole in the most efficient direction towards food 90 percent of the time.
A male rhea used this same technique, but also created a second one. He rotated the bold in the middle of the wheel until it fell apart.
However, this particular group of ostriches did not innovate during these tests.
'We classify palaeognath innovation as low level or simplistic–and it is certainly not as complex as the innovation we see in crows and parrots,' said Clark. 'However, it is still a very important finding. There were no reports of technical innovation in palaeognaths before our study, and there was a prevailing view that they are 'dumb' birds. Our research suggests that is not true and that technical innovation may have evolved far earlier in birds than previously thought.'

The team plans on conducting more cognitive research on palaeognath birds. In order to make a fair comparison, the rotary task must be used on other bird species to assess both how they respond to the same problems and how they try to solve them.
'The more we study palaeognath birds, the more we can understand the broader picture of bird cognition,' said Clark. 'And because palaeognaths birds are the closest living relatives to dinosaurs, research might shed light on how dinosaurs behaved.'

The playful yet assertive interaction between the two dogs fits with what scientists understand about canine social behavior. A March 2019 study published in Scientific Reports noted that "dogs can form relationships of comparable qualities with both humans and other dogs," and that these relationships vary across multiple components depending on the partner. Stanley Coren, a professor emeritus in the department of psychology at the University of British Columbia and author of several books about dogs, says that dogs thrive on positive social interactions, regardless of species. In a February 2013 article for Psychology Today, Coren explained: "Although dogs are happiest when they are in a social situation, the species that they are interacting with is less important than the quality of the interactions." He added: "Dogs that have been properly socialized will congenially approach virtually anything that is alive, regardless of its species, and, unless they receive hostile signals, they will attempt to establish a good-natured relationship." Viewers on TikTok flooded the comments section with amused reactions. User Jennifer Dawn Allen wrote: "He said you wanna act like a baby I'm gonna carry you like one." The original poster responded: "He is so strict." Another user, Elizabeth Shekhets, asked: "Is he available to babysit human kids too? I have two and I'm tired." Ellison Medical Institute researchers have shown that the rate of change of DNA sequence can be tracked over time, opening doors to personalized cancer prevention programs and better early cancer detection LOS ANGELES, June 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Researchers at the Ellison Medical Institute (EMI) have developed a novel method to monitor the accumulation and rate of change of genetic mutations in real time using blood samples. Unlike earlier studies that relied on patient samples provided at single timepoints, EMI's study was able to longitudinally follow changes over time. These findings demonstrate that it's possible to observe the buildup of mutations as they happen over short intervals, offering a dynamic view into the rate of change and an individual's biological state. Published in the Nature Journal, Scientific Reports, the study marks a significant step in the development of personalized prevention strategies and may enable better early cancer detection. 'Rather than waiting for symptoms to emerge, we're using technology to identify who is at higher potential of developing DNA changes, and hence cancer – this could help us intervene sooner with preventive strategies, tailor care more precisely, and improve patient outcomes in impactful ways,' said Dr. David Agus, EMI Founding CEO and study senior author. To conduct the study, EMI researchers collected blood samples every three to six months from more than 100 participants – including individuals with and without cancer – over a nine to 18-month period. Using long-read sequencing technology, they analyzed each participant's germline genome in peripheral blood cells at multiple timepoints to detect newly acquired somatic mutations – random mutations that occur over time as cells grow and divide rather than being inherited. The study found that the number of these mutations increases with age, with roughly 27 additional mutations per decade of life. Researchers further categorize those mutations based on their origin, distinguishing those that arise from the natural aging process, from exposure to tobacco, or from loss of fidelity in DNA replication. It showed that, for certain types, measurable changes can occur within just a few months, reinforcing the value of longitudinal monitoring. 'To enable this research, we built a secure, cloud-based infrastructure and a custom bioinformatics pipeline that applies deep learning to rapidly extract valuable insights from large datasets,' said Xingyao Chen, EMI Manager of Data Science and lead author of the study. 'This system not only supports reliable scaling but also paves the way for a national validation clinical trial and future clinical integration.'
