Puri Rath Yatra Stampede: Congress demands resignation of Chief Minister and Law Minister

Bhubaneswar, June 29 (UNI) The Odisha Congress today demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, holding the state government entirely responsible for the Saradhabali stampede that claimed the lives of three devotees.
A fact-finding team constituted by Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President Bhakta Charan Das visited Puri and conducted a detailed inquiry into the circumstances that led to the stampede near the three chariots at the Gundicha Temple.
The team comprising former PCC President Prasad Harichandan, former Minister Jagannath Patnaik, PCC Vice President Santosh Singh Saluja, and former Minister Nagendra Pradhan visited the District Headquarters Hospital to assess the condition and treatment of those injured in the incident.
The members expressed shock and sorrow upon learning that two seriously injured patients—whose legs were completely severed—were discharged without receiving adequate medical treatment.
Reiterating their demands, the Congress team called for special compensation of Rs.50 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs.25 lakh for those seriously injured.
Holding the state government wholly accountable for the tragedy, the team asserted that the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and Law Minister should step down on moral grounds, as the responsibility for managing the Rath Yatra rested with them.
The PCC team submitted its report to Pradesh Congress President Bhakta Charan Das.

Not just ‘Make in India', we call for ‘Invent in Telangana': Sridhar Babu

Hyderabad: 'Ourvision goes beyond 'Make in India'. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, the people's government of Telangana is focused on 'Invent in Telangana'—a bold mission that reflects our commitment to innovation-driven growth,' said Minister for IT and Industries, Duddilla Sridhar Babu. Addressing the valedictory session of the Industrial Innovation and Technology Expo (IITEX) 2025, organised by the Federation of Telangana Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FTCCI) at HITEX on Sunday, the Minister highlighted Telangana's focused efforts to transform into a global innovation hub. 'In the first quarter of the current financial year, Telangana's Index of Industrial Production (IIP) recorded a Compound Monthly Growth Rate (CMGR) of 2.9%, far surpassing the national average of just 0.52%. The state's Gross State Value Added (GSVA) from industry touched Rs 2.77 lakh crore in 2024–25. We also witnessed growth of 15.6% in power consumption, 9.8% in GST collections, and 13.9% in payroll enrollments—all of which point to robust industrial momentum.' 'Contrary to misinformation that industries are moving out of Telangana, the truth is the opposite: In just the last 18 months, we have attracted over Rs 3 lakh crore in investments, including Rs 40,000 crore in the Life Sciences sector alone. We have launched 150 new projects, creating employment for over 51,000 people directly and 1.5 lakh people indirectly,' the Minister said. To decentralize and balance industrial growth, Telangana is developing Future City, AI City, Life Sciences City, and Green Industrial Corridors, all adhering to international standards. Special zoning strategies are also underway: Inside the Outer Ring Road (ORR): Focus on technology and services zones; Between ORR and the Regional Ring Road (RRR): Manufacturing zones; Beyond RRR: Agricultural and Rural Innovation zones. 'These steps are part of a well-planned ecosystem designed for sustained economic expansion,' he added. Minister Sridhar Babu emphasized the government's focused efforts to strengthen Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which form the backbone of India's economy. 'In the past 18 months alone, over 15,000 new MSMEs have been established in Telangana. Our goal is to increase MSMEs' contribution to Telangana's GSDP to 10%,' he said. To achieve this, a dedicated MSME policy has been formulated and is being actively implemented. The government is also developing MSME parks in every district, with priority support for women, SC, and ST entrepreneurs.

Post Op Sindoor, India to fast-track launch of 52 defence surveillance satellites

NEW DELHI: With the need for 'deep' as well as 'persistent' surveillance of enemy territory being reinforced by Operation Sindoor , India plans to fast-track the launch of 52 dedicated satellites for the armed forces. It is also in the process of finalising a comprehensive military space doctrine. Phase 3 of Space-Based Surveillance (SBS) programme, which was approved by the PM-led cabinet committee on security in Oct last year at a cost of Rs 26,968 crore, involves the construction and launch of 21 satellites by Isro and 31 by three private companies. The first of these satellites is to be launched by April next year, with all 52 to be deployed before 2029-end, as part of the project being spearheaded by Defence Space Agency (DSA) under the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) of defence ministry. 'Work is underway to compress these timelines to launch the satellites faster into the low earth orbit (LEO) and geostationary orbit. The three private companies that have got the contracts have been told to speed up building of the satellites,' a source told TOI. 'The aim of SBS-3 is to cover much larger areas of China and Pakistan, as well as the Indian Ocean Region, with shorter revisit times (interval between two consecutive surveillance sweeps of the same location) and much better resolution. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo The space doctrine is also being fine-tuned,' he added. Parallelly, IAF is pursuing the case for three high-altitude platform system (HAPS) aircraft, which are basically unmanned aerial vehicles or 'pseudo-satellites' that operate in the stratosphere for long durations on ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) missions, as reported by TOI earlier. During Operation Sindoor, which saw intense hostilities with Pakistan from May 7 to 10, India used domestic satellites like Cartosat, as well as foreign commercial ones, for tracking military movements in Pakistan. 'We need to shorten our OODA (observe, orient, decide and act) loop. The faster India gets the 52-satellite constellation up in space the better,' another source said. India also needs to put in place its satellite shield since China is developing weapons like direct ascent anti-satellite missiles, co-orbital satellites, electronic warfare equipment, and directed energy weapons like high-powered lasers to contest or deny other nations access to the space domain. China's military space programme has expanded from operating just 36 satellites in 2010 to over 1,000 by 2024, with 360 of them dedicated to ISR missions. At a seminar earlier this month, IDS chief Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit had stressed the need to extend India's 'surveillance envelope' while underlining the critical role of 'real-time situational awareness' in conflicts. 'We must detect, identify and track potential threats not when they approach our borders, but when they are still in their staging areas, airfields and bases, deep within an adversary's territory,' he said. China's creation of PLA Aerospace Force in April last year underlined its recognition of space as the 'ultimate high ground' in modern warfare. 'Their satellites have recently demonstrated sophisticated 'dogfighting' manoeuvres in LEO, practising tactics designed to track and potentially disable adversary space assets. They have evolved from a 'kill chain' to a 'kill mesh' — an integrated network that seamlessly interweaves ISR satellites with weapon systems,' Air Marshal Dixit said.

‘No police, no systems in place… who will compensate my loss': Lapses behind Puri's Rath Yatra stampede

Family members of those killed in the stampede that took place in Puri, where hundreds of thousands of devotees have gathered for the annual Rath Yatra festival, have raised questions about the lack of security personnel and arrangements at the site of the incident. Three people were killed and more than 50 were injured in the stampede early Sunday morning outside the Gundicha Temple. Among the three dead was 42-year-old Basanti Sahoo, a native of Khurda, who had come to Puri with her husband and children to attend the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath. 'There was no system in place at all, even when the crowd swelled near the chariot after darshan started at around 4 am. While devotees were going from one side, a large crowd approached from the other, leading to chaos and jostling. We couldn't find any police personnel at the spot,' said Dillip Sahoo, Basanti's husband. Dillip, who lives in a slum in Bhubaneswar along with his daughter, son and other family members, performed Basanti's last rites at Swargadwara in Puri. The two other deceased were identified as Pravati Das (52) of Balipatna in Khurda, and Bhubaneswar native Premakanta Mohanty (78). 'My wife and others would have been saved had there been any arrangement for smooth arrival of ambulances to the spot. There was no police deployment and no volunteers despite there being utter chaos. Who will compensate my loss?' asked Pravati's husband Biswajit. According to those who witnessed the chaos, it went on for around 20 minutes while two vehicles entered the densely crowded area. Locals and other devotees were the first responders, pulling injured people from the crowd and taking them to nearby hospitals. 'Despite a large crowd forming overnight, darshan was closed early (at around midnight). Those who couldn't take darshan at night continued to wait near the chariots till morning. The crowd swelled suddenly as soon as the 'pahada bhanga' ritual started. This triggered the stampede,' said an eyewitness. Several others blamed a faulty barricading system for the chaos. As part of the Rath Yatra, all three chariots of the deities reached Gundicha Temple on Saturday, where the deities will stay till the Bahuda Yatra scheduled for July 5. On Friday, more than 200 devotees had fallen ill during the Rath Yatra due to overcrowding and humidity. The Odisha government has ordered an administrative probe into the matter to be conducted by a committee headed by Development Commissioner Anu Garg. Puri Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain and Superintendent of Police (SP) Vinit Agrawal have been replaced. Two senior police officers have also been suspended for 'dereliction of duty'. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said the 'negligence was unpardonable'. While expressing condolences, he also announced ex gratia of Rs 25 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased. 'Exemplary action will be taken against those responsible for the situation,' the Chief Minister said. A major administrative shake-up has also been initiated for the smooth conduct of the remaining rituals, including Bahuda Yatra and Suna Besha. The move is also seen as an attempt to restore the faith of the public in the system. Senior IAS officer Aravind Agrawal, who earlier served as Puri Collector, has been assigned to be in charge of overall supervision of the festival, while Additional Director General S K Priyadarshi, an experienced hand in Rath Yatra crowd management, has been made in-charge of general police arrangement. The BJP government in Odisha, which had said it would make this year's yatra 'incident-free and memorable', has also been targeted by the Opposition. Odisha's Leader of Opposition and former chief minister Naveen Patnaik hit out at the BJP-led government, saying, 'Today's stampede, occurring just a day after the abysmal failure of crowd management during the Rath Yatra that left hundreds injured, exposes the government's glaring incompetence in ensuring a peaceful festival for devotees.' Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi also expressed concern over the incident. 'This tragedy is a serious warning — for such large events, security arrangements and crowd management preparations must be taken seriously and thoroughly reviewed. Protecting lives is paramount, and no lapses in this responsibility are acceptable,' he said in a post on X. Devotees continued to throng Puri on Sunday to get a glimpse of the deities taken to Gundicha Temple from the chariots in a ceremonial procession.
