French PM Bayrou survives third no-confidence vote after 2025 budget rift
PARIS — French Prime Minister François Bayrou survived his third no-confidence vote in less than one month this Wednesday. The vote came after the recently appointed head of government used a controversial constitutional tool known as Article 49.3 to push through the country's long-overdue 2025 budget plan through parliament without a vote from the MPs on Monday. In turn, this opened his government to the risk of a no-confidence motion 48 hours later, which was backed by the hard-left France Unbowed Party (LFI), the Greens, and the Communists (all part of the left-wing coalition NFP).Surviving the vote means the budget plan is automatically adopted. The contentious bill aimed to cut an eye-watering €30bn and raise taxes by €20bn to limit France's deficit to 5.4% of GDP this year.A total of 288 votes were needed to successfully topple Bayrou's government and strike down the budget. On Wednesday night, 128 votes were counted. The Socialists (also part of the left-wing coalition) and the far-right decided not to support the motion this time.A second confidence vote tabled by LFI, this time on the Social Security budget bill, was debated later on Wednesday night but once again did not achieve the amount of votes necessary. The move has created a major rift within the NFP with the France Unbowed party accusing the Socialists of betraying the left. The center left party claims to oppose Bayrou's bill but has refused to vote against his government to allow France to have a budget."I think it's irresponsible. I think it's uncharacteristic of a left-wing coalition. I will remind you that it's the Socialist MPs who are isolating themselves from the rest of us with their choice," said Sarah Legrain, a France Unbowed MP, in an interview with Euronews."We have our own autonomy and we don't depend on anyone... it's as simple as that," hit back Olivier Faure, the leader of the Socialists. However, to demonstrate its opposition to the government, the centre-left party plans to table a spontaneous confidence motion after the budget vote."Even if I consider this budget to be a bad one, I hope that the public sector, businesses and local authorities can continue to funcition, especially those who need public funding... We can't have a country which, for the next few months months is in a state of crisis," Olivier Faure told Euronews.Michel Barnier, Bayrou's predecessor, was ousted last December after the entire left-wing coalition and the far right joined forces. But although this gives Bayrou's minority government some breathing room, the coming months will likely be turbulent.France has been in a state of political paralysis after French President Emmanuel Macron decided to dissolve the lower house of parliament following his party's loss in the European elections in June 2024.The early legislative vote held in the summer ended with a hung parliament divided into three blocs with no absolute majority.Constitutionally, Macron cannot call for early elections before the coming summer. — Euronews

French interior minister slammed for calling PSG fans 'barbarians' after Champions League victory
PARIS — French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau is facing sharp criticism from opposition lawmakers and civil rights advocates after referring to Paris Saint-Germain supporters as 'barbarians' in the wake of their UEFA Champions League victory celebrations. PSG defeated Italy's Inter Milan 5–0 in the final, prompting street celebrations across France that saw moments of unrest. According to the Paris Police Department, 131 individuals were taken into custody nationwide. Authorities reported incidents including two cars set ablaze, a store looted, and three pedestrians injured in Grenoble after a vehicle plowed into a crowd. In a post on X, Retailleau stated that while 'true fans enjoyed the match,' others 'took to the streets of Paris to commit crimes and provoke law enforcement.' He instructed police to respond 'firmly' and condemned 'the savagery of a minority of thugs who respect nothing.' His language quickly drew rebuke from the left-wing opposition. Antoine Léaument of the France Unbowed party criticized police for deploying tear gas near the Madeleine metro station and accused the minister of escalating tensions. 'The barbarian is at Beauvau,' he wrote, referencing the Interior Ministry's location. Lawmaker Alexis Corbière also condemned the rhetoric, questioning Retailleau's use of the terms 'barbarian' and 'savage,' which he said 'imply foreignness and dehumanization.' He added, 'Even when people are happy, this man is full of hatred." Thomas Portes, also with France Unbowed, directly accused Retailleau of racism, stating: 'The word 'barbarian' has no place coming from the mouth of the Interior Minister. Bruno Retailleau confirms tonight that he is a racist Interior Minister.' Retailleau has not responded to the criticism. — Agencies

Arab Ministers Condemn Israel's Ban on West Bank Visit
Jordan's Foreign Affairs Ministry has condemned Israel's decision to ban an Arab delegation from visiting Ramallah and meeting with Palestinian officials, according to Arab News. The ministry described the decision as 'a blatant violation of Israel's obligations as the occupying power.' Consequently, members of the ministerial committee decided to postpone their visit to Ramallah due to Israel's rejection of the delegation's entry through the airspace of the occupied West Bank. Planned Ramallah Visit The delegation consisted of ministers from Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and as well as United Arab Emirates. Importantly, the ministers were set to participate in 'a provocative meeting' to explore the establishment of a Palestinian state. 'Such a state would undoubtedly become a terrorist state in the heart of the land of Israel,' an Israeli official said. The source also added that Israel will not cooperate with such moves that seek to harm Israel and its security. The meeting proceeds an international conference, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, that will take place in New York on June 17-20 to consider the issue of Palestinian statehood. Mounting Pressure on Israel Recently, Israel has been experiencing mounting pressure from the United Nations and European countries which made serious steps to recognize a two-state solution in ordered to end the Israeli Palestinian conflict. On Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron said that recognizing a Palestinian state was not only a 'moral duty but a political necessity.' Meanwhile, Defense Minister Israel Katz said that Israel was planning to build a 'Jewish Israeli state' in the occupied West Bank, according to Al-Arabiya. Katz's remarks follow Israel's announcement of the creation of 22 new settlements in the West Bank. 'This is a decisive response to the terrorist organizations that are trying to harm and weaken our hold on this land,' Katz said. Katz also noted that the new settlements would be a clear message to French President Emmanuel Macron and his associates: they will recognize a Palestinian state on paper – but Israel will build the Jewish Israeli state here on the ground. Irish Politician Describes Israel's Military Campaign in Gaza as ‘Barbaric'
A video went viral on social media showing Irish Politician Barry Andrews condemning Israel's war in Gaza and describing Netanyahu's campaign as 'barbaric'. Andrews noted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that his war in Gaza was a battle against barbarism. However, the civilized world has concluded that Israel is the one who conducted a campaign of barbarism, acceding to Andrews. 'A majority of European countries have finally concluded that it is barbaric to use starvation as a weapon of war,' Andrews added. He also described the statement of Bezalel Smotrich, Israeli Minister of Finance, regarding ethnic cleansing in Gaza as 'barbaric'. @palestinegaza11357 ♬ son original – palestinegaza11357 Meanwhile, Andrews called 'Gideon's Chariots' operation as 'barbaric' and blatant violation of the international humanitarian law. 'But we cannot just focus on access for aid, we also have to make sure that violence has to come to an end,' he added. What hostage has ever been released as a result of a military action? And today we read that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) fired warning shots at French diplomats and others visiting the West Bank,' he said. 'If this is the way European diplomats are treated, imagine how Palestinians are treated in the West Bank,' the politician said. At the end of his speech, Andrews said that it was unavoidable to conclude that it was the IDF that was conducting a barbaric campaign. Since the beginning of Hamas-Israel War in Gaza in 2023, the Israeli strikes have killed more than 53,500 Palestinians and wounded more than 118,000, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.
