Thurston's brutal call on Latrell as Rabbitohs fullback set to be rubbed out by NRL

Yahoo25-04-2025

Johnathan Thurston has predicted Latrell Mitchell will be suspended after the South Sydney star was sin-binned for a high tackle on Sua Fa'alogo on Friday night. Mitchell hit the Melbourne Storm winger in the head with his shoulder after Fa'alogo passed the ball following a break.
Fa'alogo fell into the tackle due to the wet conditions, but Mitchell still made heavy contact with his opponent's head - who failed his HIA and will now miss next week's match against Canberra in Magic Round as well. Opinion is heavily divided on whether Mitchell should be suspended, with many of the believe he didn't do much wrong and tried his best to lower his body to avoid high contact.
But the fact the hit was so late will work against Mitchell, as well as his poor disciplinary record. The Rabbitohs fullback was charged five times last season, including a three-game ban for dangerous contact to the head of Warriors halfback Shaun Johnson.
Considering his poor record and the 'loading' he'll have from previous charges, it's hard to see how Mitchell won't be banned. And according to Thurston it might be a multi-week stint on the sidelines.
'He comes flying in, pretty aggressively,' Thurston said on Channel 9. 'Direct contact to the head. I think he does have a case to answer – it could be a couple of weeks.'
Andrew Johns pointed out that Mitchell had a duty of care because Fa'alogo had already passed the ball. "Latrell Mitchell just spears into Fa'alogo, who is looking for Tyran Wishart on the inside," he said. "Oh Latrell Mitchell. He could be in serious trouble."
On Fox League, commentator Dan Ginnane said: 'That doesn't look pretty for Latrell Mitchell, who has a wretched history when it comes to the judiciary. He's been found over a dozen times guilty.
'And if that holds up, he's going to miss time. That's pretty ugly. That looked a hell of a lot worse than those slow motion (replays).'
But Greg Alexander suggested there were mitigating factors because Fa'alogo slipped. "Sua Fa'alogo was two feet off the ground by the time Latrell hit him and we're watching in slow motion, which makes everything looks worse,' Alexander said. 'Very hard to change. Latrell had bent his back. If Sua Fa'alogo stays at normal height, Latrell hits him in the waist.'
Storm coach Craig Bellamy and five-eighth Cameron Munster were also quick to defend Mitchell. "I just think in the game now, there's a lot of, when people get hit high, they're dropping," Bellamy said in his press conference.
"I don't know whether ... sometimes, you can't control that. I know it's a dangerous place to go to pick ones out that you think could or couldn't have controlled it, so I don't think anyone's going to go there, but I don't think there was too much malice in it. But I only had a quick look at it."

Munster added: "I know we're trying to protect a lot of players with obviously the head knocks and stuff, but I'm probably on the side of Craig. It's slippery out there, it's wet, force on force, a lot of speed.
"Sua's very quick, Latrell's very big and I don't know where you want Latrell to go there. Sua's obviously trying to engage him to be able to pass and he slipped over, so I feel like sometimes it's hard to get yourself out of those positions when you're fully in and into the contact."
Souths are already missing the likes of Cody Walker, Cameron Murray and Jamie Humphreys, and can ill-afford to have Mitchell on the sidelines again as well. Melbourne's 24-16 win saw them remain in second place on the NRL ladder, while the Rabbitohs have dropped out of the top-eight.

Bostock's four tries fire Dolphins to destroy Cowboys

The Dolphins have surged to sixth position on the NRL ladder, with four tries to winger Jack Bostock and another masterclass by halves Kodi Nikorima and Isaiya Katoa firing a 58-4 thrashing of North Queensland. Four-try hero Bostock, who will surely represent NSW in the future, ensured the Dolphins entered the stratosphere for attacking football and defensive resolve in sequence. The ruthless Dolphins became just the sixth side in premiership history to win three consecutive games by at least 36 points after a 56-6 win over St George Illawarra and 44-8 victory over Canterbury. Former Cowboys centre Brent Tate said on Fox League it was "one of the worst" performances by the club he has seen, despite them missing four State of Origin stars. The Dolphins have won seven of their past 10 matches and are clearly the best-coached and performed side of all the Queensland teams. With their four best forwards out for the season, the response of the side from a 0-4 start to the campaign has been nothing short of extraordinary under coach Kristian Woolf. Their oldest forwards Felise Kaufusi, 33, and Mark Nicholls, 35, led the pack up front in Townsville on Saturday with gusto and grunt. Nikorima has been the unsung hero of the Dolphins' resurgence. Nikorima puts it on a platter for Herbie! 🍽#NRLCowboysDolphins Telstra Moment of the Match — NRL (@NRL) June 14, 2025 Katoa, with the most try assists this season, has got all the raps and rightly so, but his veteran partner has been a linchpin figure. Both were electric against the Cowboys, who have won just one of their past six games. The Cowboys suffered a major blow in the warm-up when star forward Jason Taumalolo withdrew with a concern over an injured calf that had kept him out of action since round nine. Bostock scored early before Kaufusi was binned for a high shot on Cowboys replacement half Tom Duffy, minutes after stand-in captain Scott Drinkwater was also hit high. Both Cowboys went off for HIAs. Down to 12 men, the Dolphins were far too classy for the Cowboys, with Nikorima and Katoa creating a second try for Bostock. Katoa sliced through to put rampaging back-rower Oryn Keeley over under the sticks for a 16-0 lead. The Cowboys caught out the Dolphins on the short side with a slick move from Drinkwater to put winger Murray Taulagi over in the corner, but that was their only joy. Dolphins utility Kurt Donoghoe scored on the cusp of halftime for the Dolphins to lead 22-4 at the break. From there it was all the Dolphins, with Bostock, outstanding fill-in fullback Jake Averillo, devastating centre Herbie Farnworth, tough-as-teak Ray Stone and Nikorima all continuing the try-scoring extravaganza.

Roosters win as Radley suffers another head knock

James Tedesco has inspired a 12-8 defeat of Newcastle, but his Sydney Roosters have cause for concern after Victor Radley suffered the latest in a long list of head knocks. Hard-nosed forward Radley suffered his second game-ending head knock of the season attempting to tackle Fletcher Hunt in Saturday night's win in Newcastle. Radley has one of the most extensive concussion histories in the NRL, estimated to have gone down with seven game-ending head knocks in the past four seasons. He will miss at least next week's clash against North Queensland, but the Roosters have traditionally taken a conservative approach to players with a track record of concussions. Watch all the highlights as the Knights take on the Roosters in Round 15!#NRLKnightsRoosters — NRL (@NRL) June 14, 2025 Errors meant the Roosters struggled for any kind of ascendancy in the first half, trailing 6-0 after Newcastle's Jack Cogger put Kyle McCarthy over on the back of a Dylan Lucas break. But Tedesco stepped up in the second half and proved the difference between the two sides, missing a combined total of 17 players to injury, suspension and State of Origin duties. At the 50-metre line, Tedesco broke through Kai Pearce-Paul and Jackson Hastings - playing his first game of the year - and reached around to find Salesi Foketi. The up-and-coming forward grabbed Tedesco's one-handed offload and tore past Hunt and through James Schiller's tackle to score his first NRL try. The try came the set after right winger Schiller went within inches of giving the Knights a three-score lead, only to drop the ball over the try-line. A profane chant rang out from the Knights' home crowd after the Roosters' ultimately game-winning try, again set up by Tedesco. The fullback put a grubber kick through the line and Siua Wong was ruled to have grounded the ball with his forearm. Dom Young was seen embracing Roosters teammates at full-time of what was likely to be his final game for the club. Right winger Young looked likeliest for the Roosters in the first half and is set to rejoin the Knights mid-season, possibly in time to face the Dolphins next week. Out-of-favour Hastings was solid without having any moments of brilliance playing five-eighth in his first game for the injury-stricken Knights since July last year. He looked particularly dangerous linking with Pearce-Paul on the right side. But Hastings found himself caught with the ball on the fifth tackle inside the red zone in the second half, one of many times the Knights failed to capitalise on their many chances.

NRL world in uproar over 'ridiculous' scenes amid crushing blow for Origin hopeful

Haumole Olakau'atu's hopes of playing a part in this year's Origin series for the Blues have taken a crushing blow after the Manly star dislocated his shoulder in Friday night's NRL defeat to the Titans. The bottom-placed Gold Coast stunned the Sea Eagles in a 28-8 flogging, with Daly Cherry-Evans failing to fire after being axed as Maroons skipper earlier in the week. But another controversial Bunker call left fans seeing red as under-fire Titans coach Des Hasler got one over his former club to ease some of the pressure off his shoulders. Manly's 20-point loss sees them lose further ground on the top-eight but their pain was compounded by a second half injury to Olakau'atu that could sideline the forward for at least six weeks and ruin his chances of an Origin recall. Olakau'atu was part of NSW's extended squad for Game 1 but passed up the chance to train with the Blues ahead of Game 2, so he could stay close to his partner for the birth of their second child. However, Olakau'atu's hopes of forcing his way into Blues coach Laurie Daley's Game 3 side were dealt a horror blow in a second half incident that could have dire ramifications for Manly as well. RELATED: Calls for immediate change amid apparent NSW rule breach Nathan Cleary comes clean amid rumour around Mary Fowler The Sea Eagles wrecking ball looked to have scored a try to get an out-of-sorts Manly back in the game. But a superb try-saving tackle from axed Maroons star Beau Fermor dislodged the footy as Olakau'atu fell awkwardly on his right arm. The Manly star was in obvious discomfort and their fears were realised when he was escorted from the field and the shoulder dislocation was confirmed. Manly coach Anthony Seibold confirmed after the game that Olakau'atu is set for an extended stint on the sidelines. "My understanding is if there's bone damage he'll need a reconstruction, if it's muscle or ligaments only he could potentially rehab it over six weeks, but he's going to be gone for a while," he said. "But it probably summed up our night - he's going for a try and dislocates his shoulder." The injury capped off a grim night for the Sea Eagles, who trailed 22-8 at halftime and failed to score a point in the second forty. Alofiana Khan-Pereira's first half double helped Gold Coast jump out to a big lead and saw him become the fastest man to 50 tries in the NRL era - reaching the milestone in just his 52nd game. Khan-Pereira was also at the centre of the game's biggest controversy after being awarded a first half penalty during an aerial contest with Manly opposite, Jason Saab. The wingers both went up for a high ball, but Saab misjudged his leap and made minimal contact with the Titans winger, who spilled the ball close to his tryline. The Sea Eagles looked set to get the footy back in prime attacking position but Bunker official Chris Butler pinged Saab for making contact with the Titans star in mid-air. Cherry-Evans summed up the frustrations of fans by describing the decision as "outrageous", with veteran commentator Phil Gould suggesting it was yet another example of the Bunker officials having very little feel for the game. "Oh please, did we miss a meeting or something? When did they come up with this?," Gould questioned on Nine after comparing it to Brian To'o's sin-bin in Origin Game 1. "I don't know what goes through their heads that they work themselves in a position where they're looking for those types of things now. Why? Who put them up to this? That's not how the game is played, nor should it be the way the game is refereed." NRL great Brad Fittler added: "(Saab) barely touched him - he touched his hip. It's a big call. It would be interesting if Garrick catches the ball and scores. Do they go back to the touch? There was nothing more than a touch." The @NRL bunker has truly lost the plot on kick contests. Manly epically stiffed by a ridiculous ruling or 'outrageous' as DCE said. #NRLTitansManly — retro_footy_cards (@ScanlensFooty) June 13, 2025 Dear @NRL , if even your official commentators are disgusted and sppechless about the referee and bunker decisions , you should be aware that your product has become unwatchable. Outrageous. #NRLTitansManly — Joshua (@ouk_rouk) June 13, 2025 Why do they look for penalties that simply aren't there? No one - no titans fans, Manly fans, or neutrals thought that was a penalty. #NRLTitansManly — Moz Morris (@Moz_Morris) June 13, 2025 Im out, better things to do. If you blokes wanna watch these referees take the piss then go for it. #NRLTitansManly — Pingz (@FanParanoid) June 13, 2025 Stop competing in a jump contest. Man oh man I hope these ridiculous calls dont alter big game results. Hard to watch #nrltitansmanly — Jack Buchanan (@jack11buchanan) June 13, 2025 How does the Bunker continually get it so wrong 🤦‍♂️ #NRLTitansManly — Eden Richards (@Eden_Richards) June 13, 2025
