Kolkata: A 31-year-old doctor, posted at SSKM Hospital and residing in Jadavpur, fell victim to an elaborate cyber fraud after his phone was allegedly stolen from his SSKM hostel room. The victim, Souradeep Das, ended up losing close to Rs 2.7 lakh in the process.
Cops stated that the nature of the crime has left them confused, given it does not suit any traditional cyber crime format. The victim has now approached top Lalbazar officers and even the CMO, which has also enquired about the incident.

The cops claimed that once the mobile was stolen, there was no traditional SIM swapping or any online fraud as is being claimed by the victim or his friends. "It was a simple case of misuse. There were even physical withdrawals involved, and it seems that there was an ATM card involved. This does not fit a traditional cyber fraud," said an investigator, stating they are looking into each withdrawal and verifying them physically with CCTV footage from ATMs and documents provided by three banks.

TOI spoke to the cyber fraud victim, Sourodeep Das, a third-year cardiology student at SSKM Hospital, on Saturday. Having lost over Rs 2.6 lakh from his four different bank accounts, the 31-year-old is now banking on help from his parents and colleagues until his monthly stipend is credited to his account. His father is a retired govt employee, while his mother is an associate professor of political science at Jogomaya Devi College.
"I went to Durgapur to attend a friend's wedding. After coming back to my hostel, I discovered on April 23 that my cellphone containing two separate SIMs was missing. I lodged a complaint with Bhowanipore police station on the same day. My four bank accounts – three of them in two nationalised banks and one private bank – were linked with one of the SIMs. I got both the SIMs blocked on the same day," said Das, a Jadavpur resident who stays in the medical college's hostel.
"The next day, my father received a call from my number, and the caller asked him to come to Durgapur and collect the phone. I contacted the telecom service provider and asked how my blocked SIM turned operational. Since my Aadhaar number and address were saved in the stolen phone, the accused managed to get it unblocked by the service operator with the help of my personal information," he recounted.
On April 24, Das got a duplicate SIM against the same number and got it activated by the evening. "I was on duty in the OT that day when the new SIM was activated. After coming out of the OT, I checked my phone and read a message alert that Rs 6,000 was deducted in the name of the Jharkhand State Beverage Corporation from one of my accounts. Being doubtful, I checked my other accounts and discovered that a major portion of my savings was siphoned off," he recounted.
Das stated that he lodged a complaint with the cybercrime cell immediately after sensing fraud. "I visited the divisional cyber cell and shared all transaction details with the cops," he said.

Who is Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the man who has been returned to the US facing criminal charges for 'migrant smuggling'?

Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland man who was mistakenly deported to his native El Salvador in March by the Donald Trump administration, has been returned to the United States to face federal criminal charges. Hours after he was brought back to the United States, Abrego Garcia appeared in a Tennessee courtroom to face criminal charges for allegedly transporting undocumented migrants within the US. Who is Kilmar Abrego Garcia? Kilmar Abrego Garcia is a Salvadoran man whose case has become a focal point in the ongoing debate over US immigration enforcement, due process, and the limits of executive power. Born in July 1995 in San Salvador, Garcia fled gang violence in El Salvador at the age of 16 and entered the United States illegally around 2011 or 2012. He settled in Maryland, where he worked as a construction apprentice and became a father to three children, including a son with autism and a hearing impairment. Garcia was a member of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART) Local 100 union. The 'mistaken' deportation: In March 2025, Garcia was deported to El Salvador by the Trump administration, despite a 2019 court order barring his removal due to threats against his family. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Device Made My Power Bill Drop Overnight elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Pre-Order Undo The administration later acknowledged that the deportation was an "administrative error." He was placed in a Salvadoran prison, an event that sparked public outcry and triggered legal challenges from his family and various advocacy groups. After intervention from a Maryland federal judge and pressure from Democratic lawmakers, Garcia was returned to the US this month, but with a twist – to face federal charges related to human smuggling. What is Abrego Garcia accused of? The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released an investigative report detailing a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee, during which Garcia was found with eight other individuals in his vehicle, leading to suspicions of human trafficking . The report also indicated that Garcia had been validated as a member of the MS-13 gang by the Prince George's County Police Gang Unit in 2019. Based on this information, a two-count federal indictment was unsealed upon his return, charging him with conspiracy and unlawful transportation of undocumented immigrants. The indictment alleges his involvement in a decade-long operation transporting undocumented migrants from Central America, allegedly linked to the MS-13 gang. However, his family denies these claims. What is 'migrant smuggling'? People smuggling, under US law, is "the facilitation, transportation, attempted transportation or illegal entry of a person or persons across an international border, in violation of one or more countries' laws, either clandestinely or through deception, such as the use of fraudulent documents". Now, in general terms, migrant smuggling is assisting a person to enter or stay in a country without having the legal permission to do so. Migrant smugglers are sometimes driven by the desire for financial or material gain, rather than being motivated by altruistic or humanitarian reasons. However, migrant smuggling is different from human trafficking, as human trafficking involves exploiting men, women, or children for the purposes of forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation. Whereas, human smuggling involves the provision of a service—typically, transportation or fraudulent documents—to an individual who voluntarily seeks to gain illegal entry into a foreign country. Garcia's legal team has disputed the allegations, insisting that they stem from the 2022 traffic stop where no charges were initially filed. As per their argument, the charges are politically motivated and seek to portray him as a criminal despite his long-standing residence and contributions to the US. Kashmiri man's death in Delhi: Parties seek probe

Amid allegations of foul play, the mysterious death of a Kashmir youth in Delhi earlier this week has triggered anger in the Valley with increasing demands from political parties for an impartial probe. Zubair Ahmad Bhat, 30, a resident of Ali Kadal in Srinagar, died in New Delhi under mysterious circumstances on Tuesday. His family has alleged that he had gone to Delhi for work and was assaulted in Delhi. People's Democratic Party leader Iltija Mufti alleged that Bhat was subjected to custodial torture by Delhi Police. 'Zubair Ahmed Bhat didn't die under mysterious circumstances. Let me bite the bullet & state the unpleasant truth. His family claims he was picked up by Delhi Police, questioned & thrashed with rods. This 30 year old man was the sole breadwinner for his mother & siblings. When will this pattern of snuffing out the lives of innocent Kashmiris purely on suspicion end? We demand answers & accountability. @DelhiPolice @JmuKmrPolice,' Mufti wrote on X. She also met the family and said that his family members showed her the texts he had sent before death. She said: 'They showed me his last message, which said the police caught him and took his Aadhaar card. He messaged his sister and wrote, 'The police caught me because I am Kashmiri. They took my Aadhaar card, and then they beat me with sticks. I am in a hotel. May God have mercy. His family says he left Jammu for Delhi. After reaching Delhi, the police at one of the stations, I think it was Lajpat Nagar, caught Zubair, took his Aadhaar card, and beat him. The next day, when he went back to collect his Aadhaar card, they beat him again. And when he returned home, he died' is what happened to Zubair.' Congress leader and AICC chairman of media and publicity, Pawan Khera sought response of Delhi Police regarding Bhat's death. 'In the capital city, a young Kashmiri dies under mysterious circumstances and not a word of it gets discussed in mainstream media? If you don't question the authorities, obviously the authorities won't give you answers. @DelhiPolice needs to respond to questions surrounding the death of Zubair Ahmad Bhat,' he said on X. National Conference spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar sought an impartial probe. 'In this age of technology & smart policing, I fail to understand how a death could be termed mysterious. Clear the air around the death of Zubair Ahmad in Delhi @DelhiPolice. We demand an impartial, time bound probe into the incident,' Dar said. Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari said that the J&K administration should take up the matter with Delhi authorities. 'It is now the responsibility of the J&K administration to take up this matter with the authorities in Delhi to ensure that the truth behind his tragic death is fully uncovered,' Bukhari said.
