Kayaking woman bitten by alligator on Lake Wales' Tiger Creek Canal
A woman was bitten on the elbow by an alligator Monday while paddling at Tiger Creek Canal in Polk County, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said.
The FWC and Polk County Fire Rescue responded to the scene and the victim was taken to the hospital to be treated for her injuries.
A contracted nuisance alligator trapper was dispatched to remove the alligator.
Serious injuries caused by alligators are rare in Florida, FWC said.
'The FWC places the highest priority on public safety and administers a Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program (SNAP),' an email statement said. 'SNAP uses contracted nuisance alligator trappers throughout the state to remove alligators believed to pose a threat to people, pets or property.
People with concerns about an alligator should call FWC's toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286).
The FWC recommends the following precautionary measures near alligators, including in or near the water, to reduce the chances of conflicts with alligators:
Alligators in Polk: Among the state's most alligator-infested lakes, Polk County shows up a lot. Surprise? Nah
Keep a safe distance if you see an alligator.
If someone is concerned about an alligator, they should call FWC's toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286).
Keep pets on a leash and away from the water's edge. Pets often resemble alligators' natural prey.
Swim only in designated swimming areas during daylight hours and without your pet. Alligators are most active between dusk and dawn.
Never feed an alligator. It's illegal and dangerous. When fed, alligators can lose their natural wariness and instead learn to associate people with the availability of food. This can lead to an alligator becoming a nuisance and needing to be removed from the wild.

Alabama officials recommend locking food stamp cards to prevent out-of-state fraud
HUNTSIVLLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) is recommending that all EBT cardholders utilize the new Lock/Unlock feature on the ConnectEBT app and website, especially the 'Lock Card Everywhere' option which will help block out of state fraud. From May 2023 to Dec. 20, 2024, Alabama DHR replaced $15.9 million of SNAP benefits due to EBT fraud. From October to December 2024, over 26,000 reimbursements were approved for $10.5 million. The Department believes that 100 percent of the funds were stolen from outside of the state. Data shows that around $1.8 million in Alabama EBT expenditures happened in the state of New York and around $2.2 million was spent in Pennsylvania. DHR said it believes most, if not all, of this is fraud. 'The very best thing our SNAP clients can do is lock their card when they aren't using it,' said Alabama DHR Commissioner Nancy Buckner. 'With the funds being stolen by utilizing out of state EBT terminals, we believe using our newest feature on ConnectEBT and locking the EBT card will truly combat this type of fraud.' Clients can choose from two options when locking their card: 'Lock Card Everywhere' or 'Lock Card'. 'Lock Card Everywhere' completely locks cards to ALL purchases anywhere. The 'Lock Card' option will lock cards from purchases outside of Alabama but does allow online purchases. DHR strongly recommends the 'Lock Card Everywhere' option at all times when the card is not in use. In the event a card is used at a location for a food purchase, the business can access the amount due, even if the card is then immediately locked by the user. Authorization for the purchase is in real-time and based on the card status at the time of the transaction. If the card is locked when the card is swiped or keyed in, then the retailer's transaction will fail due to the locked card status. But if the cardholder locks the card, even if it is immediately AFTER the transaction is complete, the transaction would have already been authorized and completed and the transaction would be successful as long as available funds were in the account at the time of the purchase. EBT cardholders may also sign up for alerts through the ConnectEBT app and website. These alerts include account activity alerts through the app, text, and/or email.

Pope meets with child protection advisory board as survivors call for zero tolerance of abuse
VATICAN CITY -- Pope Leo XIV met with members of the Vatican's child protection advisory commission on Thursday for the first time amid questions about his past handling of clergy sex abuse cases and demands from survivors that he enact a true policy of zero tolerance for abuse across the Catholic Church. The Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, which is made up of religious and lay experts in fighting abuse as well as survivors, called the hourlong audience a 'significant moment of reflection, dialogue, and renewal of the church's unwavering commitment to the safeguarding of children and vulnerable people.' The group said it updated history's first American pope on its activities, including an initiative to help church communities in poorer parts of the world prevent abuse and care for victims. The Vatican did not provide the text of Leo's remarks or make the audio of the audience available to reporters. Pope Francis created the commission early on in his pontificate to advise the church on best practices and placed a trusted official, Boston's then-archbishop, Cardinal Sean O'Malley, in charge. But as the abuse scandal spread globally during Francis' 12-year pontificate, the commission lost its influence its crowning recommendation — the creation of a tribunal to judge bishops who covered up for predator priests — went nowhere. After many years of reform and new members, it has become a place where victims can go to be heard and bishops can get advice on crafting guidelines to fight abuse. O'Malley turned 80 last year and retired as archbishop of Boston, but he remains president of the commission and headed the delegation meeting with Leo in the Apostolic Palace. It has often fallen to O'Malley to speak out on egregious cases that have arrived at the Vatican, including one that remains on Leo's desk: The fate of the ex-Jesuit artist, the Rev. Marko Rupnik, who has been accused by two dozen women of sexual, psychological and spiritual abuse over decades. After coming under criticism that a fellow Jesuit had apparently received preferential treatment, Francis in 2023 ordered the Vatican to waive the statute of limitations on the case and prosecute him canonically. But as recently as March, the Vatican still hadn't found judges to open the trial. Meanwhile, the victims are still waiting for justice and Rupnik continues to minister, with his supporters defending him and denouncing a 'media lynching' campaign against him. Leo, the Chicago-born former Cardinal Robert Prevost, has been credited by victims of helping to dismantle an abusive Catholic movement in Peru, where he served as bishop for many years. But other survivors have asked him to account for other cases while he was a superior in the Augustinian religious order, bishop in Peru and head of the Vatican's bishops' office. The main U.S. survivor group, SNAP, has also called for Leo to adopt the U.S. policy calling for any priest who has been credibly accused of abuse to be permanently removed from ministry. ___ Associated Press religion coverage receives support through the AP's collaboration with The Conversation US, with funding from Lilly Endowment Inc. Millcreek man says over $1000 was stolen from EBT account
David Cannavino is just one of the countless people here in Erie who depend on his EBT card to buy food and other necessities. He said he had over $1,000 in his account, but when he checked it again on Thursday, he was left with only $1.05. 'I just… I'm still dumbfounded about it,' said Cannavino, a Millcreek resident. Cannavino's account showed his card was charged twice to a bodega he's never heard of in Chicago. Credit card skimming scams: What they are, and how to avoid being a victim He said he doesn't use a credit card machine without checking for skimmers first and always shops at the same places, and he believes his account was hacked. 'It's going to be nuts until the card gets loaded again because I'm retired, I'm on social security and that's all I get, so it impacts me hard,' said Cannavino. After he learned that his EBT account was empty, he came to the Erie County Assistance Office on Holland Street, but he didn't get very far. 'I let them know about it, I gave them my card, and then they said, 'Okay, well…' They sent me in to talk to some guy and the guy says, 'There's nothing we can do about it. Our hands are tied.' So, you know, what am I going to do now?' said Cannavino. SNAP funds stolen from 17 Pennsylvanians, over $8,000 lost Cannavino said he spoke to other recipients at the assistance office who said their money disappeared, too. An official at the assistance office told JET24/FOX66 that they couldn't answer our questions but referred us to another official in Harrisburg. That official told us that he hadn't heard about the problem but assured his office is working to get to the bottom of it. However, that's not going to help Cannavino and the other recipients who now don't have money to buy food. New lock safety feature could help SNAP benefit recipients avoid theft 'Due to the end of congressional authorization in December 2024, benefits stolen via card skimming, fraud or other electronic theft after December 20, 2024, cannot be reissued,' said Val Arkoosh, PA Department of Human Services Secretary. According to the US Food and Nutrition Service, the 2025 American Relief Act did not extend the authority to replace stolen SNAP benefits. However, the Department of Human Services has already launched a program to help people lock their EBT cards, and you can find more information . Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
