PSG dismantle Atletico Madrid 4-0 in impressive Club World Cup opener
Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain opened their Club World Cup campaign with an impressive 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid, underlining to their rivals that they will likely be the team to beat in this tournament.
PSG largely dominated Atletico at the Rose Bowl on Sunday in their first match since trouncing Inter Milan 5-0 to win its first Champions League title on May 31.
Fabian Ruiz and Vitinha scored in the first half, while Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-in scored against 10-man Atletico in the second half of their Group B clash.
The European giants met at the venue of the 1994 World Cup final for one of the highest-profile matches in the group stage of the first 32-team edition of the Club World Cup.
Ousmane Dembele did not feature for PSG after reportedly injuring a quadricep while playing for France on June 6. Goncalo Ramos replaced Dembele in Luis Enrique's only change to the starting lineup from the Champions League final.
Enrique wore shorts and a training shirt on the sideline while coaching PSG in 31 Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) midday California heat.
PSG controlled possession early, and Ruiz capitalised from just outside the penalty area in the 19th minute. The Spanish midfielder long coveted by Atletico beat Jan Oblak with a clever strike into the far corner.
Atletico got a golden chance to tie it in first-half injury time, but Gianluigi Donnarumma swallowed up Thomas Griezmann's chance in the box.
Moments later, Vitinha slipped through the Atletico defence and scored on the break.
Julian Alvarez appeared to pull one back for Atletico in the second half, but his goal was chalked off after VAR determined Koke had fouled Desire Doue in the buildup.
Atletico's Clement Lenglet was sent off in the 78th minute with his second yellow card on a frustrating day that left coach Diego Simeone visibly furious at both the referees and his players' mistakes.
Alexander Sorloth somehow missed an open net in the 82nd minute for Atletico that made Simeone fall to his knees in disbelief.
Mayulu secured PSG's victory five minutes later, and Lee converted a penalty with the final kick of the match from the spot after a handball by Robin Le Normand in the box.
Man of the match Vitinha told DAZN it was a 'very good performance' by his side.
'We did a very good game, it is difficult with this temperature. We did well against a tough team, we controlled all of the game. We are happy with the result,' he said.
'The toughest thing to do in football is to maintain the level and that is what I try to do.'
PSG coach Enrique also hailed his side's performance.
'I think every single player showed their best quality to the team,' he told DAZN.
'As a coach, I am happy. Really great to feel that love [from the stadium]. We are happy and want to continue with our ways.'
In Sunday's earlier game, Bayern Munich romped to a 10-0 victory over Auckland City as Jamal Musiala had a hat-trick in a 17-minute span of the second half in front of a crowd that unfurled a banner urging to 'Smash FIFA!' while accusing the governing body of mismanagement.
Thomas Muller, Kingsley Coman and Michael Olise scored two goals each for the Bundesliga champions, who went ahead on Coman's goal six minutes in. Bayern had a 17-1 advantage in shots on target.
Musiala, a 22-year-old midfielder, replaced Harry Kane in the 61st minute, making his first appearance since April 4 after recovering from a hamstring injury. He scored in the 67th minute, converted a penalty kick in the 73rd and scored again in the 84th.
Before a crowd of 21,152 at TQL Stadium, fans displayed a red-and-white banner referring the 2015 raid by US law enforcement at a Zurich hotel that led to the arrest of many football officials over corruption allegations: '10 Years Baur Au Lac – World Football Is More Poorly Governed than Before! Smash FIFA!'

Four people sentenced in Spanish court over Vinicius Jr effigy
Four people have been handed suspended jail sentences of between 14 and 22 months by a Madrid court after being found guilty of a hate crime related to an effigy of Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior, Spain's La Liga has said. 'The defendant who posted the video online received a special disqualification from working in education, sports, or recreational youth settings for four years and three months, while the others received three years and seven months,' a La Liga statement said on Monday. They were all involved in hanging a banner reading 'Madrid hates Real' and an inflatable black effigy in a replica of the Brazilian's number 20 T-shirt on a bridge before a Copa del Rey match against Atletico Madrid in January 2023. According to the ruling, one defendant was sentenced to 15 months in prison for a hate crime and an additional seven months for making threats, having distributed images of the act online. The other three were sentenced to seven months in prison for hate crimes and seven months for threats. They will not serve prison time, however, after all four signed a letter of apology to Vinicius, Real Madrid, La Liga and the Spanish football federation (RFEF). The first defendant was also fined 1,084 euros ($1,257) and the other three 720 euros ($835), with additional punishments including a 1km (0.6 miles) restraining order from Vinicius, his home and workplace, and a ban on approaching football stadiums during La Liga or RFEF matches. They will all be required to participate in an educational programme on equal treatment and non-discrimination for the prison sentences imposed to be suspended. There was no immediate confirmation from the court and no immediate reaction from Vinicius, who is currently playing in the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. La Liga has filed complaints about various incidents of racial abuse and threats against the Brazilian international in recent years. On June 10, 2024, three Valencia football fans were sentenced to eight months in prison for hate crimes directed against Vinicius in May 2023 in what was the first conviction for racist insults in a football stadium in Spain. Last September, a Spanish court sentenced a Mallorca fan who racially abused Vinicius in February 2023, and former Villarreal player Samuel Chukwueze a week later, to a year in prison and issued a three-year stadium ban. Baseball star Shohei Ohtani to make Los Angeles Dodgers pitching debut
Shohei Ohtani is set to return to the mound as the starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the opener of a four-game series against the visiting San Diego Padres, the Major League Baseball (MLB) team has announced. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts originally told reporters on Sunday that Ohtani was set to pitch a simulated game in the coming days, but the team decided to give him the nod against the rival Padres on Monday. 'He's getting very eager, very excited,' Roberts said. 'I think the thought is that given where we're at right now, anything he can give us is additive, even if it's an inning or two innings on the front end.' This will mark Ohtani's first big league pitching appearance since August 23, 2023, and his first with the Dodgers. The two-way player had Tommy John surgery on his elbow in September 2023, three months before signing a 10-year, $700m contract with the Dodgers. JJ Spaun has won the US Open golf championship by two shots from Robert MacIntyre after draining an incredible 64-foot birdie putt that snaked across a sodden 18th green following a chaotic final round at the Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania, United States. 'Just to finish it off like that is just a dream,' the Californian said after claiming his first major on Sunday. 'To have my own moment like that at this championship, I'll never forget this moment for the rest of my life.' Spaun needed only a par at the closing hole to avoid a Monday playoff but went one better, sinking the huge putt in the rain to win the year's third major and erase the disappointment from his close call at The Players Championship in March. When the clinching putt dropped, Spaun tossed his putter, delivered a fist pump, hugged his caddie and then walked off the green with his two young daughters in tow on Father's Day to celebrate a career-defining win.
