McLaren Teammates Tangle Late in Canadian Grand Prix, George Russell Wins Behind Safety Car

Yahoo8 hours ago

George Russell and Mercedes captured their first win of the 2025 season Sunday afternoon in Montreal under the safety car following a late crash between McLaren teammates battling outside of a podium finish. Russell was leading Max Verstappen at the time of the incident.
This is Russell's first win in Canada and fourth of his career.
Russell and Verstappen entered this race weekend on shaky ground after their collision in the Spanish Grand Prix, which led to Verstappen's three penalty points putting him one point away from a race ban.
'George suddenly, just aggressively braked,' Verstappen said.
Russell told the Mercedes pit wall that Verstappen had overtaken him under the safety car with two laps to go, and the stewards ruled that Russell was ahead before the caution flag waived.
"It's now showing Russell winning, pretty basic," Christian Horner told Max Verstappen. "Just don't fall for the gamesmanship, thank you."
With Verstappen on the verge of a ban, the Red Bull team principal wants to keep his driver as cool as possible, with just one race remaining.
Kimi Antonielli captured his first podium of his career after starting fourth and staying competitive with the best racers in F1 throughout a tightly battled grand prix. Antonielli becomes the third youngest podium finisher in F1.
While the tension between Russell and Verstappen has been building over races, the same can be said about Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, as much as they deny it as the two teammates closely battle for the top spot in the WDC.
With four laps remaining in the Canadian Grand Prix, Piastri and Norris were battling for fourth. Coming to the first turn, Norris made a bold attempt to pass, putting himself into the wall.
Norris quickly went to his radio to claim the blame for the incident with his teammate.
'Yep, I'm sorry it's all my bad, all my fault. Unlucky, scary, stupid from me,' Norris said over his team radio following his collision with Piastri.
The F1TV booth made comparisons between the crash between McLaren teammates and one of the infamous incidents between Will Buxton and Lewis Hamilton at the same track in 2016.
With Piastri holding on to his fourth place running order and Norris falling to 18th due to causing the crash, he loses 10 points in the championship standings.
The two Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finished fifth and sixth behind Piastri.

2 Defensive Rebounders Better Than Chicago Sky's Angel Reese originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky got their third win of the season on Sunday as they defeated the Connecticut Sun on the road, sparking hope for better days ahead after a rough start to the season. Advertisement The Sky's big victory included a stellar performance from Angel Reese, who recorded the second triple double of the WNBA season in a winning effort in Connecticut. Reese had 11 points, 11 assists and 13 rebounds, showing off her diverse array of passing skills while continuing to dominate on the glass. Recently, the Sky star took issue with fans who began utilizing the phrase "mebound" to describe Reese's tendency to miss her own shot and grab her own rebounds. Reese currently leads the league in offensive rebounds, but remains behind two WNBA stars in the defensive rebounding totals. U.S. dominates Trinidad and Tobago in its CONCACAF Gold Cup opener

U.S. midfielder Brenden Aaronson celebrates with teammates after scoring in a 5-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago in a CONCACAF Gold Cup match on Sunday. (Jeff Chiu / Associated Press) The U.S. hopes a blowout win over the world's 100th-ranked team can start to lessen the pessimism created by the Americans' longest losing streak since 2007. Malik Tillman scored twice and Diego Luna had a pair of assists in a 5-0 rout of Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday in the Americans' CONCACAF Gold Cup opener. Advertisement 'Really important I think to cut a little bit this — I don't say negativity, but, yes ... but it's really important now to start the competition with a good feeling,' U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino said. Victory in the Group D opener ended a four-game losing streak and came after days of controversy over Christian Pulisic's desire to rest during the Gold Cup and Pochettino not including the star in a pair of pre-tournament friendlies the attacker offered to play in. Advertisement 'It was in our hands to show a reaction and I think we've done it today," Tillman said. "We played a good game and it was nice to bounce back, have a good start to the tournament.' Brenden Aaronson added his ninth goal in the 82nd and Haji Wright his fifth just 1 minute, 13 seconds later for the 16th-ranked Americans, who drew just 12,610 to PayPal Park. 'Malik is a talented player. It's obvious that everyone can see," Pochettino said. 'October, November, when we met for the first time I think it was difficult to create this relationship that the player need(s) and the coach need(s) to trust and to trust each other. ... I think now after a few weeks together I really start to understand him and he starts to understand us. And he's very special, a very special talent and a very special kid.' Luna, a 21-year-old who impressed Pochettino during his debut in January when he insisted he stay on the field with a broken nose, was playing not far from where he grew up and said he had gotten tickets for about 30 family and friends. Advertisement 'Just an honor, right, to be able to dream about this day,' he said. '[To] start off a tournament like this back in my home city is awesome.' Luna ran onto Jones' back pass, dribbled down the left flank and crossed to Tillman for the second goal, then shot from just inside the penalty area for the goal that glanced off Tillman for a 3-0 lead. The Americans have won their group in 16 of 17 Gold Cups, along with a second-place finish behind Panama in 2011, and improved their group stage record to 41 wins, one loss and five draws. They play invited guest Saudi Arabia on Thursday at Austin, Texas, then close group play on June 22 against Haiti at Arlington, Texas. Advertisement Matt Freese was in goal in place of Matt Turner, who had started 14 consecutive competitive matches for the U.S. and 23 of 24 dating to the 2022 World Cup. The lone exception was a Gold Cup group stage game against St. Kitts and Nevis in 2023. Pochettino said he wanted to create competition for Turner, who didn't get into a Crystal Palace match after March 1. The coach said Turner told him he was disappointed with the decision but understood it and would compete to get playing time.
