Mother loses three of her children thanks to teenage driver's 'selfish decision'
Three children from the Lavina-Galve Family were killed and a fourth and their mother left fighting for their lives after an allegedly drunk driver smashed into their car.
Ramone, 15, his brother Jace, 13, and sister Maya, six, died in the accident, and their brother Avery, 10, and mother Jade, 35, were badly injured.
Their Chrysler Pacifica was struck at a red light by a Dodge Caravan, driven by Ethan Lehouillier, 19, who sped off a highway exit ramp in Etobicoke, Toronto, about 12.30am on Sunday.
Lehouillier was arrested at the scene, appearing to have avoided serious injury as he was handcuffed and taken away.
A 40-year-old man, who was driving the Pacifica, whom police said was a family friend, suffered less serious injuries.
Family mourned the three children with heartbreaking tributes and hoped Avery and her mother would recover.
Their uncle Jeff Lavina said: 'You kids will always be in my heart. Thank you for giving me the blessing of being your uncle. You kids gave me extra purpose.
'Hearing you all call me "Tito Jeff" was one of the best feelings ever. If I could choose, I'll choose to be your uncle in every single life.
'Our memories will live on forever. All the times spent with you all were the best moments in my life.'
Jade's best friend Emilia Kim lashed out at Lehouillier, who is accused of causing the crash by driving dangerously while intoxicated.
'No parent should ever have to endure what Jade is going through. To lose three children in a blink, it's unthinkable, unbearable and cruel beyond reason,' she wrote.
'This was not an accident. It was a choice, one made with complete disregard for human life.'
'A choice that stole three young lives filled with laughter, dreams and love. A choice that left a mother broken and a family torn apart forever. I am angry. So angry.'
Drunk? Police say Lehouillier was under the influence when he crashed into the family
A fundraiser for the family has amassed more than $60,000.
Lehouillier is charged with three counts each of dangerous driving causing death, impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, and impaired driving causing bodily harm.
He faces a maximum punishment of life imprisonment if convicted of even one of the first six charges.
The teenager faced court at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre and was remanded in custody.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford said his 'thoughts are with the families grieving this unimaginable loss of life'.
'I am heartbroken by the tragic and senseless deaths of three young children,' he said.
'The person responsible for this heinous act needs to face the harshest punishment possible.'
Police are still investigating the crash and asked drivers who were nearby to share their dashcam footage.
Acting Duty Inspector Baheer Sarvanandan said the crash was caused by 'one person's decision to drink and drive'.
'We educate the public of the dangers of drinking and driving, and this is the result: a family is torn apart,' he said.

BREAKING NEWS High school football star, 16, dead in New Jersey shooting as family mourn 'tragic accident'
A New Jersey community is in mourning after the shocking death of a 16-year-old high school football star who was shot in the head on Friday night. Xyere Brooks died in hospital two hours after being shot inside a Camden County house, in what his family have described as a tragic accident. Investigations are still ongoing into how the incident unfolded, but the victim's brother Manazh Tomkins told 6ABC: 'She put the gun to his head, and I guess she didn't expect it to go off. 'To make a long story short, the gun went off on my brother, and he's no longer here with us.' Brooks was a sophomore at Kipp High School in Camden, and was a star of the football academy with the likes of Rutgers and Syracuse already taking interest in him, according to his mother Antoinette Brooks. Speaking to local media, she added: 'These parents that are leaving their unsupervised teenage kids at home and not knowing what they may come into their homes with... there has to be a better way.' No criminal charges have currently been filed, and the identity of the girl mentioned by Brooks' brother has not been released by cops. Brooks' school also paid tribute to the 16-year-old in a post on Instagram, alongside which they posted a photo of him on the football field, and one of his first day at school. 'This week, our KCNA community is mourning and honoring the life of KHS Camden sophomore Xyere Brooks. 'Xyere began his journey with us at KIPP Lanning Square Middle as a fifth grader with a smile that could light up a room, a competitive spirit, and the kind of energy that brought joy to every hallway and dance battle. 'At @khscamden, Xyere was a committed student, a loyal and encouraging teammate and friend, and a standout football player whose talent and drive were evident to all who knew him. 'As a forever member of the LSM familia and a proud Titan, Xyere will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.'

EXCLUSIVE Revealed: Couple who died with their two dachshunds when their car plummeted 300ft off a cliff were a bus driver and his wife who was so ill and frail she had hardly left home
A couple who died when their car plummeted 300ft off a cliff near a well-known coastal spot were a bus driver and his wife who was so ill and frail she had hardly left home for two-years, neighbours have told MailOnline. The tragic couple - named locally today as John and Lynn King - died instantly when their silver Ford Mondeo, which also contained their two Dachshund dogs, drove off a cliff close to the Needles on the Isle of Wight on Friday evening. John worked as a driver for local bus company, Southern Vectis, and knew the routes around the island well, neighbours said. One local told MailOnline how she had seen the couple - thought to be aged in their early 70s - just hours before they died. John was helping Lynn into their car because she was struggling to walk unaided. The couple had their two Dachshund dogs with them. The neighbour said: 'It's really sad, I spoke to John a few times. He would always park his car right outside my house. I think I saw his wife maybe twice in the three years they'd been living in the road. 'She wasn't well. I don't know exactly what she was suffering from but I think it was serious. 'John was effectively her carer. I never saw nurses or medically trained staff ever go in. I think he did everything for her. 'On Friday afternoon, some time between 4pm and 4.45pm I saw John walk past my window. 'He was helping his wife to the car. Their two Dachshund dogs were with them. 'His wife looked really, really frail. She was hunched over quite badly and was finding it very difficult to walk. I was surprised to see her out of the house. 'That was the last time I saw them. They never came home. 'The police turned up at their home around midnight on Friday night into Saturday morning. 'I think what happened may have been planned. John drove for a living and knew these roads on the island like the back of his hand. 'He'd mown his lawn for the first time in three years last Wednesday. Two days before he died. He'd never done that before ever. 'But for some reason he only cut a small patch of the garden, close to the back of the house. I thought that was unusual. 'To me, he seemed like he was getting things in order. Then on Friday he took his wife and dogs out in the car - which he never did before - and that was the last we saw of them. 'I don't know if they had children or grandchildren. I'd say there were in their early 70s. But John was a nice guy and doted on his wife.' The couple's rented terraced home in Cowes is still being searched by Hampshire and Isle of Wight police officers. Coastguard, police, firefighters and ambulance crews all rushed to the scene on Friday evening and photos showed them working to get to the car. Witnesses said they watched on as a man was pulled from the wreckage and onto the shore. Response teams were then reportedly seen commencing CPR on one of the casualties. Photos of the aftermath show the wreckage of the car submerged in the water. With the roof and bonnet crumpled, while coastguard searched around it. In a statement released on Friday evening, the police said: 'We're currently at the scene of a serious incident in Totland. 'We were called at 7.21pm this evening after a car, which was being driven along Alum Bay New Road, left the road, came off the cliff top and came to rest in the water below.' Emergency services rushed to the scene and a winchman was lowered from the coastguard helicopter down to the bottom of the cliff. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance landed at Yarmouth where two ambulances, a critical care paramedic and Police had relocated awaiting the arrival of a casualty. Two coastguard teams responded and were stood down in the early hours of Saturday morning. The cliff sits near the world-famous Isle of Wight Needles, which is a row of three stacks of chalk that rise about 30 metres above the water. Near the landmark is a small theme park with a viewing point and chairlift down to the beach, with views of The Needles. The attraction brings in thousands of visitors every year and is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island. The Needles Landmark Attraction was closed by police yesterday while emergency teams attended the incident. Access to the beach, an observation tower and the Needles Old Battery fort were also restricted.

Blaze that killed 'lovely little girl', nine, and her father while mother 'was away on Eid pilgrimage' could have been started by tumble dryer, fire chairman says
A devastating house fire that killed a 'lovely little' nine-year-old girl and her father could have been started by a tumble dryer, a fire chairman has said. The inferno engulfed the family's red-brick semi-detached home on Russell Close in Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire, at around 5am yesterday, while the mother was in Saudi Arabia for Hajj during Eid celebrations. While on the pilgrimage, she had left her taxi driver husband, who locals today named as Sohaib Ahmed, 38, in charge of their two daughters and son. Neighbours say the boy, who is the family's eldest, had been staying with relatives on Saturday night and was not at home when the fire broke out. However, his two young sisters aged nine and 11 were inside the property with their father. All three had to be rescued from the burning building by firefighters, but Mr Ahmed was tragically pronounced dead at the scene and his daughter Manahil Ahmed died yesterday in hospital. The 11-year-old girl remains in critical condition as she continues to fight for her life. The family's mother, Asifa Ahmed, 38, is thought to have touched back down in the country today after flying back from the Middle East. Devastated neighbours today said they 'don't know how' Mrs Ahmed will deal with the grief of losing both her husband and her 'sweet, lovely little girl', Manahil. One said: 'Everyone knew her and the rest of the family; they'd lived here over a decade and were very nice people. We're praying the other sister pulls through. What's happened is awful news.' Former neighbours Andy Boys, 30, and Mehvish Iqbal, 29, lay floral tributes outside the fire damaged house, which has the doorway boarded up after firefighters wrenched off the front door to gain entry into the blazing building. Mr Iqbal said: 'My son used to play outside with her little girl, the one that has passed away. It is just awful. 'To know that the mother is away in Mecca and she is coming back to this, I don't know how she is going to deal with it mentally. The girls are lovely little girls, I pray that her older sister pulls through.' Mr Boys added: 'They were lovely neighbours, we lived next door.' Ali Arshad, a borough councillor in Heckmondwike, said the full community was in shock, adding: 'The lady had gone to perform Hajj. It should have been a joyous time for her, now we're looking at a tragedy for the whole family.' West Yorkshire Police said it is still investigating the cause of the fire, but Darren O'Donovan, a councillor for Dewsbury West and chairman of the fire authority, said the blaze may have been started by a tumble dryer. Mr O'Donovan said: 'It's clearly a tragic event for the family and people that live in that neighbourhood. 'My thoughts and condolences go out to the family and those affected by this. We believe that the fire started about an hour before the 999 call came in.' He said early indications suggested 'the fire started in the kitchen area and its ignition source was a tumble dryer.' 'There are a number of tumble dryers that have been recalled by a number of manufacturers,' he added. 'That's the tragedy: this was just a local family on a very regular street in Heckmondwike and a tragic accident has taken place. 'I think the community is rallying and pulling together to support other members of the family and friends that are affected by this.' Another neighbour recalled witnessing the fire tear through the property and said it 'seemed to go on forever'. They said: 'I heard sirens on Sunday morning and then looked out to see the smoke and the emergency crews doing CPR on the dad and kids. It seemed to go on forever, it was horrendous.' He said the children attended Crossley Fields Junior and Infant School. Councillor Viv Kendrick, who represents the Heckmondwike ward, said she was 'horrified' after the incident. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said it sent four crews to tackle the blaze, which was reported at around 6am. Detective Inspector Paul Greatorex, of West Yorkshire Police, said: 'We are continuing to work with colleagues at the fire service to investigate this dreadfully sad incident, which has resulted in a father and daughter losing their lives. 'Extensive inquiries have been ongoing since yesterday and we have been working to locate and support relatives of the victims both here and outside of the UK at what is clearly an awful time for the family. 'While our inquiries remain ongoing, we do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances regarding the cause of the fire and will be preparing a file for the coroner in due course. 'Our support for the family involved clearly also still continues.' Cllr O'Donovan said that the fire and rescue service would have an increased presence in the neighbourhood over the next few days to speak with neighbours about fire prevention measures. He encouraged people to check they had working smoke alarms, a night-time routine which included turning off electrical equipment and closing internal doors and to check the recall lists for tumble dryers from brands including Hoover, Haier, Candy, Lamona, Capel, Baumatic, Montpellier and Iberna.
