Taking improv competitions into the workplace
culture arts 39 minutes ago
For most people, the concept of getting up on stage for improvisation is the stuff of nightmares, let alone doing it at work with your colleagues. But Covert Theatre's founder and artistic director Wade Jackson has been making it his mission to take the fear out of improv and focus on the connection. He started doing improv at university in the '90s and has been taking theatre into corporate spaces for 32 years. Five years ago, despite being in the height of the pandemic, he started Office Comedy Clash; an inter-office improv competition. Wade is also an author, speaker and high performance coach and speaks to Culture 101 about taking theatre into workplaces, encouraging senior leaders and executives to play and not be afraid to show their humanity.

At the Movies for 8 June 2025
Simon Morris finds himself confused by flashbacks, dream sequences - and Wes Anderson's convoluted story structures. He sets out through the thickets of The Phoenician Scheme, Bring her back and New Zealand road-movie Kōkā. The Phoenician Scheme opens on the fabulously wealthy Zsa Zsa Korda setting out to make even more money, with the help of his daughter, a novice nun, and a Swedish tutor called Bjorn. Directed by Wes Anderson, it stars Benicio del Toro, Michael Cera, Scarlett Johanssen, Willem Dafoe, Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Ayoade, Tom Hanks and Bill Murray as God. Kōkā sees an ailing Maori matriarch and an angry delinquent form an unlikely team as they take a journey away from past traumas towards healing and reconciliation. A first feature by writer-director Kath Akuhata-Brown. Bring her back is a stylish Australian horror, in which two teen siblings are fostered by a woman who turns out to have her own issues. Can partially-sighted Piper get through an unexpected ordeal? Starring Sally Hawkins (The shape of water), it's directed by brothers Danny and Michael Philippu (Talk to me). Boxing: David Nyika to fight journeyman after brutal knockdown
Australian Jai Opetaia knocks down opponent David Nyika of New Zealand during the Ring Magazine and IBF World Cruiserweight title fight in Gold Coast, 2025. Photo: AAP / New Zealand boxer David Nyika is set to step back in the ring for his first fight since his brutal loss to Jai Opetaia. The Olympic bronze medallist and two-time Commonwealth Games champion will take on Kiwi journeyman Nik Charalampous in Sydney next month. The fight is part of the undercard to the Sonny Bill Williams-Paul Gallen fight on 16 July . Nyika, 29, was knocked out by Australian Opetaia in the fourth round of their IBF world cruiserweight title fight in January. It was his first defeat in his brief professional career. "I'm ready," said Nyika. "My journey restarts here. "Fair play to Jai, he was the better fighter on the night. But true champions get back up again when they get knocked down - and I have no doubt I am going to be world champion." Veteran boxer Charalampous has a 23-6-2 record. "I think Nyika is an overrated pretty boy," Charalampous said. "One of us went 10 rounds with Jai Opetaia, the other got stopped. I'm ready to go hard!"

At just 18, Brando set out to walk the entire coastline of New Zealand. That was just the beginning. Since then, he's skied across Greenland, kayaked solo around Vancouver Island, and biked through the Australian Outback-pushing himself to the edge of human endurance. But Wildboy isn't just about physical feats-it's about mental resilience, personal transformation, and embracing difference.
