Comelec: DQ, candidacy cancellation for senators, solons resolved before June 30
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is aiming to resolve all disqualification and cancellation of candidacy cases involving bets for national positions and legislative districts before the end of next month.
"'Yung tungkol sa disqualification cases, cancellation of candidacy involving national positions tulad ng senador, party-list, at legislative district, ang timeline natin, bago mag-June 30, dapat ma-resolve namin," Comelec Chairman George Garcia said in an interview on Super Radyo dzBB.
(Our timeline is to resolve before June 30 disqualification and cancellation of candidacy cases involving national positions like senators, party-list representatives, as well as legislative district congressmen.)
The poll body chief said the Comelec is processing thousands of pending cases.
"Medyo napakadami po ang mga tinatanggap nating disqualification case, mga pending na kaso na nire-resolve natin," Garcia said.
(We have received numerous disqualification cases. We are resolving numerous pending cases.)
"Asahan na sa mga susunod na araw, may mga ilalabas pa tayong desisyon. Tulad nung mga nakaraang araw, may mga inilabas tayong desisyon kaugnay sa disqualification case ng mga kandidato," he said.
(We will be releasing decisions on these cases in the coming days. Like what we did in the past, we came out with decisions related to disqualification cases of several candidates.)
Garcia said that even if a candidate has been proclaimed already or lost in the polls, the Comelec will still issue a decision.
"Ang isang kasong disqualification ay may dalawang mukha. Puwedeng disqualification case na pagtatanggal na kandidato o election offense o kasong kriminal. Maaaring makaligtas sila sa disqualification pero hindi sila makakaligtas sa election offense," Garcia said.
(A disqualification case has two faces: removal from public office, or an election offense or criminal case. They may escape disqualification but they may not get off the hook from an election offense.)
As for election protests, the Comelec chairman said the poll body's jurisdiction only covers local positions such as "governor, vice governor, sangguniang panlalawigan, city mayor, city vice mayor, at sangguniang panlungsod."
"Yung election protests, hanggang kahapon, dumagsa 'yung pagpa-file ng kaso sa amin. 'Yung 10-day period to file protest, mandatory period 'yun. Walang extension 'yun," Garcia said.
(Until yesterday, we received a high volume of election protests. Our 10-day period to file a protest is mandatory and has no extension.) — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Comelec 1st Division lifts proclamation suspension vs Isabela vice mayoral bet
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) First Division has lifted the suspension of the proclamation of lawyer Jeryll Harold Respicio, who won the vice-mayoralty race in the town of Reina Mercedes, Isabela, in Eleksyon 2025. According to a decision dated June 2, the poll body division ordered the reconvening of the municipal board of canvassers within five days for the proclamation of Respicio. 'After due deliberation and in consonance with the thrust of the Government to deliver basic and vital services but without prejudice to the resolution of this matter on the merits, the Order of the Commission (First Division) dated May 12, 2025, insofar as the Respondent Jeryll Harold Paz Respicio is concerned, is hereby lifted, effective immediately,' the ruling reads. 'The Municipal Board of Canvassers of Reina Mercedes, Province of Isabela, are directed to reconvene within five days from the receipt of this order for the purpose of proceeding with the proclamation of Respondent as the winning candidate for the position of Vice Mayor in the Municipality of Reina Mercedes, Province of Isabela,' it added. It can be recalled the Comelec en banc has ordered the suspension of proclamation of 19 candidates for Eleksyon 2025, including Respicio, pending the resolution of the charges they are facing with the poll body. In February, the poll body, through Task Force Katotohanan, Katapatan at Katarungan (KKK) sa Halalan, filed cybercrime charges against Respicio over a series of social media videos allegedly claiming he can manipulate the results of Eleksyon 2025. A disqualification case was also lodged against him. Respicio, for his part, filed a petition before the Supreme Court, questioning the Comelec's move to suspend his proclamation. —AOL, GMA Integrated News

Comelec affirms disqualification of Cagayan governor Mamba in 2022 polls
With just one month remaining before the terms of current local leaders expire, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has affirmed that Cagayan Governor Manuel Mamba was disqualified from running in the 2022 elections and allowed Vice Governor Melvin Vargas Jr. to take his place. The poll body, sitting en banc, stood by the decision of its First Division in April 2024 to disqualify Mamba after he, along with Mabel Mamba and Francisco Mamba, who were candidates for governor, vice governor, and 3rd district representative of Cagayan province, respectively, provided financial aid, scholarship grants, and various transport vehicles to the constituents of Cagayan province using public funds during the 45-day spending ban. The First Division dismissed the petition filed by Victorio Casuay against Mabel Mamba and Francisco Mamba for being moot, as they failed to win their election bids. However, it granted the disqualification case against Mamba after he was found in violation of Section 261 (v) of the Omnibus Election Code and Comelec Resolution No. 10747, which prohibits the release, disbursement, or expenditure of public funds for any and all kinds of public works from March 25 to May 8, 2022. Acting on Mamba's appeal, the Comelec en banc said Mamba's duty as governor ''does not grant him unrestrained discretion in the exercise of his powers.'' ''Public officials, regardless of their position, are bound to act within the confines of the law and are subject to the limitations and restrictions imposed by applicable statutes and regulations. The mere desire to fulfill one's duties does not justify actions taken in violation of legal mandates," the resolution said. Mamba will become vice governor on June 30, the day his term as governor ends, following his victory in the May 2025 midterm elections. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/VBL, GMA Integrated News
