Olympic champion Matty Lee retires from diving
Olympic champion Matty Lee has announced his retirement from diving.
Lee won Olympic gold in the men's 10m synchro alongside Tom Daley at the 2020 Tokyo Games, the highlight of a career that brought medals at every major international level.
The 26-year-old Briton, who underwent surgery on his spine in early 2024, announced his decision to retire on Instagram.
'This decision hasn't been easy, but after losing my dad in 2022, I struggled to find the same passion I once had, he was my why. Then came injuries, surgeries, and the realisation that I don't want to be a broken man moving forward.'
Lee made his World Championship debut aged just 17 in 2015. Two years later he won world mixed 10m synchro silver alongside Lois Toulson and then – in the year after his Olympics success – took silver in the men's event at the 2022 worlds alongside Noah Williams.
A European title came alongside Daley in Budapest in May 2021 as the pair warmed up for Tokyo, where they defied the odds to beat China's Cao Yuan and Chen Aisen to gold by 1.2 points.
Also in 2022, Lee and Williams added the Commonwealth Games title to their world silver, but last March Lee underwent a discectomy on the L5/S1 disc in his spine – ruling him out of the Paris Olympics.
In making his announcement, Leeds-born Lee paid tribute to his late father Tim as he thanked family, friends, coaches, team-mates and fans for helping him throughout his career.
'What's next?' he wrote. 'Honestly, I don't know. And that's both terrifying and exciting. But I do know this, there's more to life than diving, and I'm ready for it.'

Welsh star opens new local skatepark in Cardiff
A new 'destination' skatepark has opened in Llanrumney, with Dirty Sanchez' Matthew Pritchard cutting the ribbon at the long awaited facility and taking the first skate. Plans for the project were first announced by Cardiff Council three years ago as part of the council's Skateboard Amenities project that will see the city filled with new skateparks across the city over the next ten years, subject to funding. Work started on the new park in December 2024 and finally opened today - Friday, June 6. The East Side park in Llanrumney, next to the Eastern Leisure Centre, has multiple obstacles including ledges, rails, hubbas, manual pads, stairs, banks as well as a quarter pipe making it both fun and challenging for those looking to learn or hone their skating skills. The local skateboard community worked with consultants, VDZ+A and Newline Skateparks, to design the 1,000m2 skatepark. Never miss a Cardiff story by signing up to our daily newsletter here It has been designed to be suitable for skaters of all ages and abilities, and is built from concrete, providing a higher quality, lower maintenance and lower noise facility than the old timber-framed skatepark it replaces. Dirty Sanchez star and Welsh skateboarder, Matt Pritchard joined skaters to open the facility. He said: "It's what we need in Cardiff. I'm 52 now, and when I first started skateboarding, we had nothing in Cardiff, so to have facilities like this is amazing. "It's really good for the kids as well, especially now that skateboarding is in the Olympics and is being taken seriously. Fair play to Cardiff Council, they've done an amazing job, and it's nice to see them investing in skateboarding in Cardiff." Cabinet member for culture, parks and events, Cllr Jennifer Burke, said: "This is the first skate park to be built as part of our new skateboard strategy and it's already proving to be a real hit with the city's skate community. "The skate scene in Cardiff is really vibrant and diverse – you've got young children and teenagers, all the way through to older skaters who are now introducing their own kids to what is now an Olympic sport. James Norton and Rebecca Adlington take part in 10-hour charity swim
Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington and actor James Norton have taken part in a wild sea swim for a marine conservation charity. On Friday, the two were among those to take the plunge in a 10-hour endurance ocean swim at Joss Bay in Kent, to raise money for the Blue Marine Foundation, a charity committed to addressing overfishing. Ahead of the event, they shared their earliest memories of the sea and pressed the importance of allowing future generations to 'experience the magic of healthy seas'. Ms Adlington told the PA news agency: 'I've always felt a deep connection to water, so when the opportunity came up to support coastal restoration through this event with Talisker and Blue Marine Foundation, it just felt like a natural fit. 'As a swimming challenge, this one stands out because of its direct impact on protecting and preserving marine life, with £150 from every kilometre swum helping to fund essential conservation work.' The two-time gold medal swimmer added: 'I hope people see this event as more than just a challenge, it's a call to action.' A report published by Blue Marine Foundation in July 2024 noted a 92% UK reduction in seagrass meadows and a 95% decline in native oyster reefs over the last century. Happy Valley actor Norton said: 'Like everyone, I'm in awe of the ocean. It's wild, powerful, and under threat. 'Taking a stand is about protecting biodiversity and ensuring future generations can experience the magic of healthy seas.' He added that his family goes by the mantra 'you'll never regret a swim' but admitted he had never been involved with this level of endurance swimming. New government regulations came into force on Friday which give water industry regulator Ofwat the power to retrospectively prevent bonuses paid in cash, shares or long-term incentive schemes to chief executives and chief financial officers for breaches of environmental, customer service or financial standards in a given financial year. Ms Adlington did not have a direct challenge for water companies in the UK but added that the Blue Marine Foundation was committed to coastal regeneration and improving UK waters. Ahead of the event, Norton said: 'My earliest memories of the sea are going on day trips to Scarborough. 'My whole village would cram into a coach and head to the beach for a day of fish and chips, rock and candy floss.' For every kilometre swum by participants at Joss Bay between 7am and 5pm on Friday, Talisker, who are supporting the event, will donate £150 to the foundation.

Host more events to inspire the next generation, says Neita
Daryll Neita has called for the UK to host more world-class sporting events to inspire the next generation. The European Athletics Championships come to the UK for the first time next summer with Alexander Stadium in Birmingham playing host. It will mark the first time that the UK has hosted a standalone major athletics championships since the 2017 World Championships in London, with Neita among more than 100 signatories of an open letter released this week calling for the showpiece event to return to the capital in 2029. Racing in front of a home crowd at Birmingham 2026 is an opportunity that Neita is relishing as she plays her part in trying to give athletics a spotlight in non-Olympic years. "I'm all for inspiring the next generation," she said. "I have an athletics community where I plan sports days and it's super important for me that young kids have the opportunity to be inspired by sport and see it live. "For people who watch us on television, to have the opportunity to come down and see us in person is brilliant. "That's what we need as a sporting country. We need this legacy of putting on top events more often." The past two London Athletics Meets have drawn in sell-out crowds and the 2025 event is no different, which Neita feels is part of a wider boom in interest. "This sport has been growing in the past few years and it's been great to be part of that evolution,' she added. "For so long there was this talk of athletics needing to be picked up and needing help to get more eyes on it, so it's great to see the amount of opportunities that are now coming through. "People are interested in it, we just need the exposure." Neita won 100m European bronze at Munich 2022 before adding 200m silver to her name two years later in Rome. But even with two relays golds from the continental championships in 2018 and 2024, the sprinter is still eager for her first-ever individual major title and feels confident she will finally bring it home in Birmingham. "It feels to be like it's meant to be," she said. "I've done the bronze in the 100m and silver in the 200m, so the only other option is for me to win double gold. "That's how I see it and there's no better place to do it than at home. "That British cheer is definitely what can get me onto the podium again. "I've made an adjustment in terms of my training set up and the plan is that by next summer I will be raring and ready to go. I'm feeling really confident."
