Jaipur: Members of the Valmiki community staged a protest at Shaheed Smarak in Jaipur, Tuesday, demanding immediate resumption of the stalled recruitment process for 30,000 sanitation workers.
Angered by the Rajasthan govt's decision to halt the drive, the protesters warned of a state-wide "Stop Work – No Broom" strike starting Aug 15, threatening to disrupt municipal services and private sanitation work across the state. The protesters submitted an 11-point charter of demands, urging the government to prioritise the Valmiki community—traditionally employed in sanitation—through formal recruitment rules and notifications.
Citing a Supreme Court judgment dated Aug 1, 2024, the protesters also demanded internal reservation within the Scheduled Castes category, seeking a 50% share for Valmikis. Other key demands include resolution of court cases linked to the 2012 and 2018 recruitment batches, implementation of Rs 695 as the minimum daily wage, abolition of contract systems in departments such as schools and hospitals, and filling of permanent vacant posts.

They also called for easing compassionate appointment norms, extending retirement benefits, providing jobs to dependents of workers with chronic illnesses, and giving preference to widows and divorced women in recruitment. Additionally, the community demanded a permanent office for the All India Safai Mazdoor Congress in Jaipur and quarterly meetings with the Urban Governance Department.

'We don't have money, and neither does Siddaramaiah': Empty-coffer remarks embarrass Karnataka govt; home minister G Parameshwara says it was only in jest

BENGALURU/BAGALKOT: A tongue-in-cheek remark by Karnataka home minister G Parameshwara about shortage of funds in the state govt has triggered a political firestorm and social-media frenzy, after a video of his speech in North Karnataka's Badami went viral. This prompted Parameshwara to issue a clarification on Tuesday, insisting his comments in jest had been misconstrued as a suggestion that the Congress govt was facing a financial crunch. Speaking at the inauguration of a fire station in Badami Monday evening, Parameshwara urged local Congress MLA BB Chimmankatti to think big and push for a Rs 1,000-crore development plan for the region, once the capital of the Chalukya dynasty. HM clarifies there's no financial distress The home minister doubled down on the point for comic effect. "After providing rice, lentils, and oil, the funds are depleted," he quipped, before gesturing to excise minister RB Timmapur and adding with a grin, "The 'enne' (liquor or excise) minister is right here," drawing peals of laughter from the crowd. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo While the humorous tone elicited chuckles at the event, the viral clip has since ignited serious political chatter and left the govt red-faced. The minister said on Tuesday: "I have not said like that, who said there is no money? I have defended the govt, saying we have presented a record budget... as someone said things jokingly during the speech, I reacted in a similar fashion, that's all." Reiterating the fiscal strength of the state, the minister said, "A sum of Rs 22,000 crore has been allocated for irrigation in the budget. Allocations have been made for the five guarantee schemes, and instructions have been made to prepare an action plan for Rs 50 crore in every constituency." He added, "I'm now saying officially that there is no financial distress in our govt. I'm saying it very clearly. Sometimes, there may be a delay in the release of funds, as DPR and estimates have to be prepared before releasing money. There may be some delay in that; other than that, there is nothing else." Despite the explanation, Parameshwara's remark - "We don't have the money, and neither does Siddaramaiah" - continues to dominate discussions, with political opponents questioning the fiscal health of the state and the delivery of five welfare guarantees.

All funds for Sanskrit, only crocodile tears for Tamil, says CM Stalin

CHENNAI: Pointing to a news report which said the funds allotted for the promotion of Sanskrit was manifold higher than Tamil and other classical languages, Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday blamed the BJP-led union government for allotting all funds for Sanskrit while feigning love for Tamil. Citing the report written based on information obtained under the RTI Act, Stalin, in a post on X, said, 'Sanskrit gets the crores; Tamil and other South Indian languages get nothing but crocodile tears.' According to the report, between 2014–15 and 2024–25, the union government spent Rs 2,532.59 crore on promoting Sanskrit, while only Rs 147.56 crore in total for the promotion of the other five classical languages combined, including Tamil. The allocation for Tamil alone was Rs 113.48 crore, the report said. Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, who spoke to reporters on Tuesday, said, 'They (centre) have continuously accorded more importance and more funds to the northern language (referring to Sanskrit).' He said that late CM M Karunanidhi secured classical language status for Tamil so that it would receive due importance. However, Tamil and other classical languages have not received the importance given to the 'northern' language, he added. 'This clearly offers answers for why Tamil Nadu should rally under one umbrella,' he said, referring to 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu', the DMK's membership campaign.

"53 pc projects of Central Govt see delay of more than 3 years": AAP

New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday alleged that the BJP government and Delhi LG VK Saxena have turned governance into a 'laughing stock' by weaponising routine project delays as alleged corruption. AAP questioned why no CBI inquiries have been launched into the '10-year delay' of the Bullet Train project or the 'fact that 53 per cent of Central Government infrastructure projects face delays exceeding three years and massive cost overruns'. The party underscored the 'absurdity' of sanctioning a probe against a former Delhi minister, Satyendar Jain, who had 'no involvement with the projects in question', and pointed out the 'logical fallacy of blaming ministers' when every officer involved in such works reports 'directly' to the LG. 'If this is the new definition of corruption, then dozens of Union Ministers should face CBI action every week,' AAP said, calling the entire exercise a politically motivated farce. In a statement, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) pointed out that the BJP Government and its Lieutenant Governor (LG) have turned governance into a 'perpetual joke'. 'They are wasting taxpayers' hard-earned money on frivolous investigations. How can anyone imagine that a delay in an infrastructure project would be called corruption--especially at the level of Ministers? If this is the yardstick for registering corruption cases, then dozens of cases should be filed every day against Central Government Ministers,' the party stated. The AAP noted, 'As of March 2023, 56.3% of Central Government projects monitored by MoSPI were delayed, with an average time overrun of more than three years. By July 2023, 809 projects were reported delayed, with a cumulative cost escalation of over Rs 4.65 lakh crore. The original cost of 835 delayed projects (as of January 2023) was Rs 10.88 lakh crore, which escalated to 14.07 lakh crore--a cost overrun of nearly Rs 3.2 lakh crore. Will the CBI register cases against the respective Central Government Ministers?' The party also questioned the execution of the flagship Bullet Train project--the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) 'By July 2022, expenditure had reached Rs 28,442 crore, with revised estimates placing the final cost at Rs 2 lakh crore--an 85% escalation from the original Rs 1.08 lakh crore. That's a Rs 92,000 crore increase. This, too, is a case of delay and cost escalation that has nearly doubled the initial budget. Will the CBI register a corruption case against that Minister?' the AAP questioned. 'As per Central Government data, common causes for delays in projects include delayed regulatory approvals, land acquisition issues, financial constraints, contractor non-performance, environmental clearances, and bureaucratic inefficiencies. Can corruption cases be registered against Ministers for these reasons?' AAP stated. (ANI)
