3 killed, 50 injured in Puri Rath Yatra; Odisha CM orders probe

At least three people were killed and 50 others were injured in a stampede that broke out at the Gundicha temple in Puri district of Odisha on Sunday morning during the ongoing Rath Yatra festivities, officials said, adding that chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi has ordered an inquiry into the incident and offered ex gratia of ₹25 lakh each to families of the deceased. Thousands of devotees thronged the procession of the chariots of Lord Balabhadra, Goddess Subhadra and Lord Jagannath in Puri, Odisha. (AP)
The incident took place around 4am when several devotees converged near the temple, 3km away from the main Jagannath temple, to witness the Rath Yatra festivities. Witnesses said that a crush was triggered after two trucks carrying Charamala wood for rituals entered the Saradhabal, a consecrated sandy open space in front of Gundicha temple, where a crowd of 1,500 devotees were waiting to catch a glimpse for the deities on charities to be unveiled.
'People just fell over each other in a matter of seconds and many fell unconscious. I rushed to the information centre seeking help, but they could not do anything,' said Biswajit Das, husband of deceased Pravati Das, who was part of the crowd in Saradhabali. 'Even ambulance was stationed at least a kilometre away.'
'When the trucks carrying charmala wood entered Saradhabali, the devotees who had assembled near the chariots of Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra surged towards the chariot of Lord Jagannath. As the area was too small, people started running in a disorganised way. Many fell down and were trampled upon,' said a district official requesting anonymity.
At least three people were killed and 50 others were injured in the incident, said Puri district collector Sidharth Shankar Swain. Six have been critically injured and are being treated in ICU. The deceased have been identified as Basanti Sahu (36) of Bolagarh, and Premakant Mohanty (80) and Pravati Das of Balipatna (42), of Khordha district, officials said.
Another witnessAshwasana said that the crowd swelled after temple authorities shut the gates of the chariot at midnight, depriving many devotees an opportunity to see the deities through the night. 'Usually, the gates are not closed after the deities reach the Gundicha temple on chariots,' she said. 'This year for no reason, they stopped it after midnight and it led to surge in crowd who were anxious to see the deities.'
Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed grief over the incident and directed authorities to initiate action against those responsible. 'Personally, my government and I seek forgiveness from all Jagannath devotees. We express our condolences to the families of those devotees whose lives were lost at Saradhabali and pray to Mahaprabhu Jagannath to grant them the strength to bear this profound sorrow,' he said in a post on X in Odia. 'This negligence is unforgivable. An immediate investigation into the security lapses will be conducted, and I have directed that necessary steps be taken to initiate exemplary action against those responsible.'
The chief minister's office later announced ex gratia of ₹25 lakh each for the kin of the deceased. An administrative inquiry under the supervision of the state development commissioner was also ordered to probe the stampede.
As part of punitive measures following the incident, the state government ordered the transfer of collector Swain and superintendent of police Vineet Agarwal, alongside suspension of deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Bishnu Pati and commandant Ajay Padhi.
Higher education department secretary Aravind Agrawal was given charge of supervising the ongoing Rath Yatra festival in Puri, with additional director general of police (modernisation) Soumendra Priyadarshi handling the security for the event, according to orders issued by the state government.
'The chief minister said that the Rath Yatra of Mahaprabhu is the pride and glory of our Odia nation. Any negligence will not be tolerated in this. Action will be taken against all those responsible,' the CMO said in a post on X.
The incident came two days after at least 600 people fell ill on Friday as a crowd of over a million people converged on the temple town for the annual Rath Yatra amid extreme heat which was exacerbated by humidity.
The opposition, led by Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief and former CM Naveen Patnaik, criticised the government over the alleged lack of state machinery to manage the crowd.
'Eyewitnesses report that the initial response to this horrific tragedy came from the devotees' relatives, with no government machinery present to manage the surging crowds, highlighting a shocking lapse in duty,' Patnaik said in a post on X. 'While I refrain from accusing the government of criminal negligence, their blatant callousness has undeniably contributed to this tragedy.'
Senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandh and Mallikarjun Kharge also condoled the deaths in the stampede, saying the incident was a reminder about the need for crowd control management.
'This tragedy is a serious warning – for such large events, security arrangements and crowd management preparations must be taken seriously and thoroughly reviewed. Protecting lives is paramount, and no lapses in this responsibility are acceptable,' Gandhi said on X.
Kharge, meanwhile, said those responsible for this tragedy must be held accountable under the law. 'The negligence and mismanagement that led to this tragedy are inexcusable,' he said on X. 'The state government and authorities must conduct a thorough investigation into the grave lapses that caused this incident. Ensuring public safety and effective crowd management is paramount, especially during pre-planned festivities.'

Accusers praise NFL's investigation into the sexual misconduct after Justin Tucker accepts suspension amid

The NFL's investigation in the Justin Tucker sexual misconduct is praised by the accusers' attorneys (Image via AP) In one of the most unsettling developments of the 2025 NFL offseason, former Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker accepted a 10-game suspension in response to sexual misconduct accusations brought forward by 16 women. Though Tucker has chosen not to publicly defend himself or undergo a disciplinary hearing, the decision has left many asking why—especially given the serious nature of the allegations and the NFL 's reportedly extensive investigation. NFL interviewed 15 of 16 accusers in a process called 'thorough and thoughtful' by attorneys Attorneys Michael Belsky and Catherine Dickinson, representing several of the accusers, publicly praised the NFL's handling of the case during a press conference, highlighting the league's detailed inquiry. 'There was an opening here for an early discussion between Mr. Tucker and the victims and the NFL,' Belsky stated. 'There was a way that this could have happened and gone down in a way that was different than how it did. Unfortunately, Mr. Tucker dug in with his denials, and we are where we are today.' According to reports from NBC Sports and The Athletic, the NFL initially proposed a longer suspension but gave Tucker the option to accept a 10-game ban to resolve the matter quietly. Tucker and his agent, Rob Roche, ultimately chose the latter. 'In order to put this difficult episode behind him and get back on the field as soon as possible, we have advised Justin to accept this resolution and close this matter,' said Roche. He emphasized that Tucker's character should not be defined by the accusations. 'The people who know Justin best know his character and understand that while he remains fully committed to excellence as a football player, he is deeply dedicated to his most important lifetime roles as a father, husband, and friend. ' Still, the decision to accept the suspension without challenge has fueled public speculation about the strength of the evidence and Tucker's silence. For many, including the accusers and their legal team, the NFL's investigative effort was a long-awaited recognition of their experiences. "Administrative lapse, callousness": BJD's Mohanty demands resignation of Odisha Law Minister over Puri stampede

Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], July 1 (ANI): Biiju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Lenin Mohanty on Monday lashed out at the 'administrative lapse and callousness' of the concerned authorities which led to the stampede during the Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra a day earlier on June 29 and demanded the resignation of State Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan. The BJP leader said that the officials and ministers concerned with the law and order situation during the Rath Yatra were absent during the stampede. Speaking to ANI, Mohanty said, 'We are extremely sad for the incident that has happened. This is the land of Lord Jagannath and people love to come to that place. During the annual rath yatra, a stampede took place on Sunday due to administrative lapse and callousness.' 'A team of 5 ministers was constituted, they were not there when the stampede took place, nor were the officials. When the stampede happened, these five ministers and the top-level officers were not there. An apology is not sufficient. Immediately after that, the real culprit should be punished. They just transferred the collector and DSP,' he said. Adding further, he said, 'The real culprit is the law minister (Prithviraj Harichandan). He always boasts high but has very low performance. He should take moral responsibility and he should resign...' Karnataka Congress MLC BK Hariprasad also reacted to the stampede and said, 'The BJP always tries to take political advantage of every situation. The Rath Yatra, which has been ongoing for thousands of years, has never experienced anything like this before. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has the entire responsibility, and he should resign immediately...' Meanwhile, as an administrative inquiry began into the Puri stampede, Development Commissioner Cum Additional Chief Secretary of Odisha, Anu Garg, spoke to mediapersons and said, '... 30 days are given in which we have to tell the reason behind this unfortunate incident and what measures can be taken so nothing like this happens in the future. We will speak with everyone and review all possible footage. What SOPs were there, and what were followed? After checking everything, the report will be submitted to the gov...' Earlier on Sunday, Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan described the stampede that occurred during the annual Puri Rath Yatra as 'very unfortunate' and said appropriate action will be taken after the completion of an investigation. Three devotees lost their lives and several others were injured during the crowd surge at the world-famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath in Puri. 'The incident is very unfortunate. The state government has taken strict action and a senior officer will investigate the incident... We will take action once we get the report of the investigation,' Harichandan told reporters. He added, 'Mahaprabhu, with his wish, gives darshan to his devotees... Tomorrow, the devotees will have the opportunity to offer prayers... I prayed to Mahaprabhu for the well-being of everyone.' Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the incident and announced a financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh to the families of each of the deceased devotees. He also assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible and pledged to prevent such tragedies in the future. 'Rath Yatra is a source of pride for Odisha,' the Chief Minister said, adding that the safety and sanctity of the festival would be safeguarded at all costs. 'The chariots in the Rath Yatra reached Shree Gundicha Temple on June 28, and as per tradition, they visited their birthplace the next day. Unique and mesmerising rituals were conducted today very smoothly... We acknowledge the support and cooperation of the devotees... The important ritual will be the Sandhya Darshan on July 4. We request all the devotees to cooperate and follow the given instructions,' he said. The annual Rath Yatra is a significant religious event in Odisha, drawing lakhs of devotees from across the country. The recent stampede has cast a shadow over the celebrations, prompting authorities to review crowd management and ensure stricter safety protocols in the coming days. (ANI)

Boulder community mourns loss of Karen Diamond, after fatal antisemitic attack

AP Memorial for victims of an attack outside of the Boulder County, Colorado (AP Photo/David Zalubowski) Karen Diamond, an 82-year-old beloved member of Boulder's Jewish community, Colorado, has died from injuries suffered during a brutal antisemitic attack earlier this month, officials confirmed Monday. Diamond was hospitalized with severe burns and trauma after being targeted in a firebombing on Boulder's Pearl Street Mall on June 1, where she and others were peacefully protesting to raise awareness for Israeli hostages held in Gaza. According to prosecutors, the attacker, identified as Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 46, allegedly threw two Molotov cocktails into the crowd while shouting pro-Palestinian slogans, including 'Free Palestine.' Court documents reveal Soliman had brought 16 more incendiary devices to the scene and disguised himself as a gardener to get close to the marchers. The attack left 13 people physically injured, with at least eight requiring hospitalization, and a total of 29 victims have now been identified by authorities. Diamond succumbed to her injuries on June 25 after weeks in intensive care. Her death has led prosecutors to upgrade charges against Soliman to first-degree murder, in addition to existing attempted murder and federal hate crime charges. Although Colorado abolished the death penalty in 2020, federal prosecutors could still pursue capital charges due to the hate crime element. Diamond was privately laid to rest, with her family and members of Boulder's Congregation Bonai Shalom mourning her loss. Rabbi Marc Soloway described the pain as 'horrific,' while Jonathan Lev, executive director of the Boulder Jewish Community Center, called her 'a cherished member of our community, someone whose warmth and generosity left a lasting impact on all who knew her'. The Anti-Defamation League and Jewish Federations of North America expressed deep sorrow, warning that the attack reflects a broader and troubling rise in antisemitic violence across the United States. District Attorney Michael Dougherty pledged to fight for justice for Diamond and all victims, stating, 'This horrific attack has now claimed the life of an innocent person who was beloved by her family and friends. Our hearts are with the Diamond family during this incredibly difficult time'.The Boulder community continues to rally in support of the victims and to stand against hate.
