Ford, Chow set to speak at joint announcement in Toronto on Tuesday

CBC5 hours ago

Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow will be speaking at a news conference on Tuesday morning in Toronto, the premier's office said.
They will be joined by Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria, and Minister of Infrastructure Kinga Surma, spokesperson Hannah Jensen said.
The conference is expected to be related to transit. It is set to begin at 8:45 a.m.
This comes after Ford returned from a meeting in Boston on Monday, along with four other Canadian premiers, to discuss trade with some northeastern U.S. governors.
The governors and premiers discussed the impacts of U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs and how U.S. and Canadian leaders "can continue to work together to maintain economic relations that benefit local businesses and residents," according to a news release ahead of the event from the host, Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey.
Speaking to reports Monday afternoon, Ford said he's spoken to leaders from around the world who are "dumbfounded" by Trump's rhetoric.

Data analytics startup Coralogix doubles valuation to over US$1 billion in latest funding round

In this stock photo, a person is seen typing on a computer keyboard. (Pexels) Data analytics platform Coralogix nearly doubled its valuation to over US$1 billion in its latest funding round, co-founder and CEO Ariel Assaraf told Reuters in an interview, as artificial intelligence-driven enterprise offerings continue to pique investor delight. Coralogix raised US$115 million in a round led by California-based venture growth firm NewView Capital, the startup said on Tuesday. Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) and venture firm NextEquity also participated in the round. The fundraise comes three years after Coralogix's previous external funding in 2022, where it raised US$142 million. Valuations have faced downward pressure since then, as investors continue to sit on dry powder amid elevated interest rates and geopolitical tensions. Enterprise software-as-a-service startups, however, have endured a wider slowdown in venture capital funding, with an AI gold-rush pushing SaaS financing to record US$58 billion in the first quarter, according to PitchBook. Coralogix's revenue increased seven times since 2022, Assaraf told Reuters. The company, however, is yet to be profitable, with nearly 75 per cent of its revenue in 2024 going towards research and development, according to Assaraf. 'Successful companies in our space always invest a large portion of their revenue in R&D and were very late to become profitable,' Assaraf added, noting a similar pathway across peers Datadog and Splunk. Startups are integrating AI-driven agents across IT development and operations as enterprises increasingly ask for all-in-one platforms to oversee their entire cloud infrastructure and processes. Coralogix expanded into AI observability with the acquisition of Aporia in December 2024. The company is aggressively looking to expand its AI talent pool, Assaraf said. 'If there's a strategic acquisition of a company with a specific, very talented pool of people around AI, we will make those acquisitions, even if they're not small,' he told Reuters. On Tuesday, Coralogix also unveiled its new AI agent 'olly,' aiming to simplify data monitoring via a conversational platform. Industry leaders have hailed AI-based agents as a transformative use case of the technology. --- Reporting by Arasu Kannagi Basil and Ateev Bhandari in Bengaluru; Editing by Alan Barona.

Once the Eau Claire YMCA, Calgary's new athletic club opens this month

The space once occupied by Calgary's Eau Claire YMCA is now home to a different fitness facility – and this one has a Nordic spa. The iconic building, located in the 100 block of Third Street S.W., was vacated in 2021 when the YMCA said it was no longer financially viable to keep the location open. Now, it's home to the brand-new members-only Eau Claire Athletic Club. Chief operating officer Alix Williams says while the original structure has been transformed, they tried to preserve certain features like the four-storey floating staircase, the skylight, the six-lane lap pool, squash courts and the running track. 'We're honouring that legacy while ushering in a bold new chapter—one defined by purpose, care and an unparalleled range of fitness, wellbeing and social club amenities unlike anything Calgary has seen before,' she said. One of the new additions is an expansive Nordic spa, which has saunas, hot and cold pools, light therapy and a dry float tank. Eau Claire Athletic Club Inside Calgary's Eau Claire Athletic Club. Members will also get access to a heated rooftop wellness patio, as well as a rooftop fitness patio overlooking Eau Claire Plaza. The club has on-site child-care services, a coffee shop (Brooklynn's Café) and a dining area (The Exchange). Eau Claire Athletic Club Inside Calgary's Eau Claire Athletic Club. (ECAC handout) 'From urban professionals to young families, our members are seeking more than amenities; they're looking for meaningful spaces to connect, recharge and thrive,' said Williams. 'We wanted to create a place where wellness isn't just about working out, it's about how people connect, recharge and feel at home in the city.' 'It's not a gym. It's a club, and there's a difference.' Eau Claire Athletic Club Inside Calgary's Eau Claire Athletic Club. (ECAC handout) Mark Garner, executive director of the Calgary Downtown Association, says projects like the Eau Claire Athletic Club 'raise the bar' for recreation, wellness and lifestyle in downtown Calgary. 'It's the kind of space that inspires pride — not just from its members, but from the entire downtown community as a new hub of urban vitality in Calgary,' he said. (ECAC handout) According to the club's website, the 'initiation fee' for an individual membership is $15,000 for a non-equity member and $35,000 for an equity member. A successful partnership to deliver 1,000 affordable housing units across the province

QUÉBEC, June 17, 2025 /CNW/ - The governments of Canada and Quebec, together with Desjardins, have announced the construction of 1,000 new affordable housing units over the next three years. These housing units will be created as part of the Desjardins Affordable Housing Initiative, a partnership launched in 2022 that will now enable the delivery of over 3,000 affordable housing units by 2028. Funding for these 1,000 new units totals nearly $184 million. This funding comes in part from the $900 million in federal funding provided to Quebec through the Canada-Quebec Agreement under the Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF), as well as from the additional $900 million in funding announced by Quebec in its fall 2023 economic update. For its part, Desjardins is committed to granting community developers nearly $50 million in mortgage financing or patient capital. With its one-stop-shop model and extensive network of Desjardins caisses and business centers, Desjardins is able to support housing cooperatives, community organizations, and municipal stakeholders in identifying and qualifying projects to accelerate the creation of affordable housing. Concrete results on the ground As of May 31, 2025, nine buildings, totaling 1,198 housing units, were already welcoming tenants, and an additional 908 units were under construction. The projects are spread across 14 regions of Quebec. Launched in 2022 through an innovative partnership between the Quebec government and Desjardins, the Desjardins Affordable Housing Initiative initially aimed to create 1,000 affordable housing units by the end of 2025. Thanks to the expertise of its Affordable Housing team, Desjardins quickly exceed the initial target of this first agreement, increasing it to over 2,000 units. This second agreement, signed with the Quebec government in partnership with the Canadian government, confirms Desjardins' leadership in tackling the housing crisis. In just six years, this partnership will make more than 3,000 affordable housing units available across the province and ensure their affordability for at least 35 years. Quotes: "The partnership with Desjardins is delivering tangible results, and I am very proud of it. This proves that by working together—with the Canadian government, municipalities, and housing organizations—we are able to quickly provide affordable, high-quality housing for the Quebecers who need it most. We are innovating, thinking outside the box, and sparing no effort in addressing the housing crisis. Our government is determined to do things differently, to build more and better." France-Élaine Duranceau, Quebec Minister Responsible for Housing "Our government is committed to implementing a series of measures to help double the rate of residential construction across the country. We will make housing more affordable by leveraging the power of public-private cooperation. Our collaboration with the Quebec government and Desjardins will bring us closer to our goal, ensuring that Quebecers have access to more affordable housing." The Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure "The structuring partnership with Desjardins has proven its full value on the ground. It reinforces SHQ's housing efforts by enabling us to work hand in hand with our partners to provide more affordable housing to those who need it most—families, seniors, and individuals—across Quebec." Jean Martel, President and CEO of the Société d'habitation du Québec "The housing crisis requires strong, rapid, and coordinated responses. This renewed partnership demonstrates that, together, we can deliver concrete results on a large scale, with a real impact on people's lives. At Desjardins, we see access to affordable housing as an essential lever for building stronger, fairer, and more human communities. By adding 1,000 affordable housing units to our roadmap, we continue our commitment to supporting families, workers, and living environments across Quebec."
