Valkyries hold off Sparks to improve to 2-1 led by French rookies Leite, Salaün
LOS ANGLES — Head coach Natalie Nakase said before Friday's game that the Golden State Valkyries offense was built to be 'next person up' every game. Without Tiffany Hayes, that was Carla Leite and Janelle Salaün.
In the 82-73 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks, the Valkyries used 30 bench points, breakout games from French rookies Leite (19 points, plus-17 in 23 minutes) and Salaün (18 points, eight rebounds) and an explosive second quarter while Hayes was sidelined with a nose injury she suffered in Wednesday's win over Washington.
After the Valkyries allowed Los Angeles guard Kelsey Plum to score 37 in their season-opening loss a week ago, they held her to 16 points on 6-for-18 shooting. Golden State (2-1) led by as many as 20 but had to stave off a late comeback bid as it scored just 12 in the fourth quarter. The expansion team came away with its first road win, and first winning streak, in franchise history.
The Sparks (1-2) went on a 19-2 run in the first quarter fueled by three 3-pointers from Odyssey Sims but the Valkyries responded with a 35-8 tear that stretched into the second quarter, where Los Angeles did not score for the first 7:24 and totaled nine points in the frame. The Valkyries led 49-35 at halftime.
After a relatively clean first half of just five turnovers, the Valkyries gave the ball away 12 times in the second half after the Sparks defense started aggressively pressing the Golden State ballhandlers. The Valkyries made just two baskets in the fourth, but Sparks' turnovers proved costly too with 18 total. Five of those came from Veronica Burton steals, a career-high.

A game after the Valkyries started 0-for-17 from deep, Salaün knocked down a trey on the first possession, setting the tone for a far better shooting performance.
Leite added nine points in the third quarter as the Valkyries expanded their lead to 20. Kate Martin, who had been scoreless through two games, knocked down two 3-pointers and the Valkyries shot 9-for-29 from range overall. Kayla Thornton picked up a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Dearica Hamby led the Sparks with 25 points.
The Valkyries will head to Brooklyn for two games against the New York Liberty next week.

Angels Make Kyle Hendricks Statement After 100th Career Win
Angels Make Kyle Hendricks Statement After 100th Career Win originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Angels edged out the Seattle Mariners 5-4 on Friday, improving to 29-33 on the season. With the win, the Angels now sit in third place in the American League West, just three games behind the second-place Mariners. Advertisement Kyle Hendricks took the mound for Los Angeles and delivered a solid outing, going six innings while allowing four earned runs. More importantly, the win marked a significant milestone, the 100th win of his major league career. The Angels posted a congratulatory message for their veteran pitcher, saying: "Congratulations to Kyle Hendricks on recording his 100th career win!" The 35-year-old right-hander now holds a 3-6 record with a 5.40 ERA this season. His last win came on May 20 against the Athletics. Los Angeles rallied from a 4-3 deficit in the fifth inning. Chris Taylor tied the game with a double that drove in Jo Adell, then Nolan Schanuel followed with a single to bring Taylor home and give the Angels the lead. Advertisement Hendricks' journey to 100 wins started when he was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the eighth round of the 2011 MLB Draft. He was traded in 2012 and made his big-league debut on July 10, 2014, with the Chicago Cubs. He played for the Cubs through the 2024 season, helping them win the 2016 World Series while leading the league in ERA that season. Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks (28). Jonathan Hui-Imagn Images Hendricks has four seasons with 11 or more wins, topped by the 16 he collected in 2016. He's coming off a rough final year with the Cubs, finishing 4-12 with a 5.92 ERA. The Angels will wrap up their weekend series against the Mariners on Sunday before hosting the Athletics for a three-game set starting Monday night. Dodgers Make Unexpected Teoscar Hernández Decision Before Cardinals Game
Dodgers Make Unexpected Teoscar Hernández Decision Before Cardinals Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's not often you turn on a Los Angeles Dodgers game and don't see two-time All-Star Teoscar Hernández manning right field. Advertisement Consider Saturday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals an exception, then. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts sat the struggling Hernández and instead gave second-year outfielder Andy Pages the start in right field. The surging Hyeseong Kim, who tallied a .404 average and .994 OPS in his first 52 at-bats, replaced Pages in center and hit ninth. Hernández has been a mainstay in the lineup, starting 48 of the Dodgers' 54 games. Don't worry, Dodgers fans: Hernández is healthy; he's just enjoying a much-needed rest day. Hernández only has two hits in his last 27 at-bats, striking out 11 times in that span. Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Teoscar HernándezJonathan Hui-Imagn Images Funnily enough, the official X/Twitter account used Hernández to promote Saturday's Dodgers-Cardinals game. Oops. Advertisement It's been a solid season for the 32-year-old, who entered Saturday hitting .272 with 10 home runs, 43 RBI, 15 doubles, and a .802 OPS in 205 plate appearances. However, Hernández's power numbers are down from last year's 10 homers and 32 doubles. We'll see if the off day allows him to reset and resume crushing homers for the defending champions. The inconsistent Dodgers are 38-26 and hold a one-game lead over the San Diego Padres in the NL West. Dodgers Make Unfortunate Tony Gonsolin Announcement Before Cardinals Game
Dodgers Make Unfortunate Tony Gonsolin Announcement Before Cardinals Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After previously battling a back injury, Los Angeles Dodgers veteran Tony Gonsolin heard three of the worst possible words that any pitcher wants to hear. Advertisement Right elbow discomfort. Any report involving an elbow is never good news for a pitcher, and it landed Gonsolin on the 15-day injured list Saturday afternoon. The move comes three days after Gonsolin allowed three runs (two earned) in a 6-1 loss to the New York Mets on Wednesday. The Dodgers did not immediately announce who would replace Gonsolin in the rotation. However, the Dodgers activated relievers Michael Kopech (shoulder) and Kirby Yates (hamstring) ahead of their afternoon showdown with the St. Louis Cardinals. Gonsolin, who missed the season's first month with a back ailment, is 3-2 with a 5.00 ERA and 38-18 K-BB ratio over 36 innings. Unfortunately for the 31-year-old, he and the Dodgers know elbow issues all too well; he missed the end of 2023 and all of last year following Tommy John surgery. Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Tony GonsolinJayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images Gonsolin's injury is the latest blow to an already-decimated Dodgers pitching rotation. Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow are on the 60-day IL with shoulder injuries. Roki Sasaki is also recovering from a shoulder injury, although he's only on the 15-day injured list. Advertisement Clayton Kershaw has only managed 15 2 / 3 innings in four starts, and Dustin May's 4.09 ERA in 11 starts isn't especially impressive. At least Yoshinobu Yamamoto owns a 2.39 ERA and 1.8 bWAR in his 67 2/3 innings. We'll see if the Dodgers look to the trade market in the coming weeks. New York Yankees veteran Marcus Stroman certainly makes sense, especially given his insistence that he wants to start. However, Stroman is still on the IL with a left knee injury. The inconsistent Dodgers are 38-26 and hold a one-game lead over the San Diego Padres in the NL West.
