Korea Herald27-02-2025

LS Eco Energy announced Thursday that representatives from Petro Vietnam Technical Service, a subsidiary of Vietnam's state-owned energy group Petro Vietnam, visited LS Cable & System's submarine cable factory in Gangwon Province to discuss potential cooperation.
The visit marks a key step in expanding the company's submarine cable business in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. It plans to collaborate with PTSC and its affiliates and LS Marine Solution to review the production and supply chain for submarine cables.
'Vietnam is rapidly emerging as a renewable energy hub in Southeast Asia, and submarine cables are a key infrastructure component for expanding the renewable energy supply chain,' LS Eco Energy CEO Lee Sang-ho stated. 'We aim to lead the Southeast Asian market alongside LS Marine Solution, leveraging our technology and supply chain capabilities.'
PTSC is currently planning a major project to transmit renewable energy generated from Vietnam's offshore wind farms to Singapore via submarine cables. LS Eco Energy is exploring ways to collaborate on this project, while LS Marine Solution is seeking routes for overseas expansion.
Additionally, LS Marine Solution is considering involvement in submarine optical cable projects connecting North America and Asia. With global demand for submarine communication infrastructure rising, LS Marine Solution plans to establish a business office in Vietnam. It intends to finalize new vessel investments within the year and strengthen cooperation with local businesses.

Nuclear boom propels Doosan to 7th among Korea's largest chaebol groups

Doosan Enerbility eyes global expansion as US, Europe reignite nuclear ambitions Doosan Group, a Korean power generation-to-heavy equipment conglomerate, has shaken up the leaderboard of the country's largest conglomerates as its listed companies, namely Doosan Enerbility, saw their stock prices surge in the first five months of this year on the back of the United States doubling down on nuclear energy. According to the Korea Exchange, the combined market capitalization of Doosan Group's seven listed companies, including Doosan Bobcat, Doosan Enerbility, Doosan Fuel Cell and Doosan Robotics, stood at approximately 47.9 trillion won ($35.2 billion) as of 2:40 p.m. on Thursday. With this, Doosan has found itself sitting in the seventh place on the list of the biggest conglomerates in Korea, led by Samsung, SK, Hyundai Motor and LG. Doosan, which was outside the top 10 standings at the end of last year, saw its rankings go up to the 10th place in December and continued to make its way up the ladder to overtake other conglomerates such as Posco, Kakao and Celltrion. Doosan Enerbility, a power generation equipment and construction firm, played a pivotal role in shooting up the conglomerate's market capitalization. The stock price of Doosan Enerbility soared to reach 45,650 won per share during intraday trading on Thursday, a whopping 160 percent jump from the 17,550 won per share at the end of last year. As Doosan Enerbility's Kospi standings leaped to as high as the 13th last month from the 37th spot at the end of 2024, it accounted for some 80 percent of Doosan Group's 19-trillion-won market cap growth during that period. Doosan Enerbility's surging stock price is now expected to gain even more, as US President Donald Trump signed a series of executive orders to reestablish America as the global leader in nuclear energy last week after repeatedly pledging to revive the country's nuclear energy sector. As the US aims to increase the country's nuclear energy capacity from 100 gigawatt today to 400 GW by 2050 and have 10 new large nuclear reactors with complete designs under construction by 2030, Doosan Enerbility finds itself in a favorable business environment based on its experiences in building nuclear reactors and plants. Hur Min-ho, an analyst at Daishin Securities, noted in a recent report that the US executive orders 'will speed up the entrance' of Korean nuclear power firms in the US, the largest nuclear power plant market in the world. The US is not the only market Doosan Enerbility has set its eyes on. It is also a key member of Korea's consortium led by state-run Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and Korea Electric Power Corp, which is only a few steps away from finalizing a $18 billion nuclear power project with the Czech Republic due to a court injunction blocking the contract signing. '(Doosan Enerbility) has not only supplied key equipment for (the Korean consortium's) Czech project but also delivered nuclear reactors and steam generators to Westinghouse's US- and China-bound AP1000 and is in discussions for supplying equipment to Westinghouse's order for three power plant projects in Poland and two power plant projects in Bulgaria,' said Hur. Doosan Enerbility is also pinning hopes on Kepco's power plant export talks with Vietnam, Saudi Arabia and Turkey along with other countries. Yang Il-woo, an analyst at Samsung Securities, said the International Energy Agency and International Atomic Energy Agency project forecast that the global energy production from nuclear power plants will triple by 2030 with the active implementation of innovative technologies such as small modular reactors. "European countries such as Denmark, Italy and Spain have become favorable toward nuclear power plants. … India plans to triple its nuclear power plant capacity by 2032 while Egypt and Turkey are looking to build new nuclear power plants,' said Yang. 'In terms of nuclear power plants as investment factors, Doosan Enerbility's price-to-earnings ratio will be high.'

KHNP to set up on-site construction office for Czech power plant project

South Korea's state-run Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) will first establish an on-site construction office in the Czech Republic to swiftly commence the nuclear reactor construction project for the European nation, company officials said Thursday, a day after the two sides finalized the deal. KHNP will soon hold a kick-off meeting with Czech state-controlled power company Elektrarna Dukovany II (EDU II) for the project and open an on-site construction office at the Dukovany nuclear power plant, located about 170 kilometers southeast of Prague, according to the officials. A South Korean consortium led by KHNP was named the successful bidder for the estimated US$19.1 billion project last month, but the signing of the deal had been delayed due to an injunction issued by a Czech court following a legal complaint from France's EDF, a losing bidder in the tender. KHNP electronically signed the final agreement with EDU II to build two new nuclear power units at the Dukovany plant late Wednesday, shortly after the Czech Supreme Administrative Court overturned the injunction. The Dukovany deal marks South Korea's first overseas nuclear power plant contract since 2009, when the country secured a deal to build the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates. "This contract is a remarkable achievement that once again proves the technological excellence and reliability of South Korea's nuclear power industry on the global stage," KHNP President Whang Joo-ho said in a press release. "KHNP will do its utmost to enhance the global competitiveness of the domestic nuclear ecosystem, fulfill our responsibility to future generations through safe and sustainable energy, and ensure the successful implementation of the project in close cooperation with the Czech Republic," he added. To speed up the process, KHNP plans to soon sign subcontracts with other members of the consortium. They are KEPCO Engineering & Construction Co., KEPCO Nuclear Fuel Co., KEPCO Plant Service & Engineering Co., Doosan Enerbility Co. and Doosan Engineering & Construction Co, according to KHNP. KEPCO E&C, KEPCO NF and KEPCO KPS, all subsidiaries of South Korea's state-run Korea Electric Power Corp., will be in charge of design, nuclear fuel supply and maintenance in the project, respectively. Doosan Enerbility and Doosan E&C will lead the construction of the nuclear reactors. South Korea plans to deliver two APR-1000 models, which are based on the advanced APR-1400 design employed by the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, but modified to meet local demand, including a reduced capacity, for the Dukovany plant. The two new reactors will be built adjacent to the four existing 510-megawatt units at Dukovany, which have been in operation since the 1980s. The first new unit is expected to begin trial operations in 2036, with the second following approximately two years later. With the project, Seoul is expected to enjoy the upper hand in possible competition for another nuclear power plant project in the Czech Republic.

VINEXPO ASIA 2025 OFFERS CLARITY FOR ASEAN TRADE IN SHIFTING LANDSCAPE

SINGAPORE, June 3, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- In a shifting global landscape, clarity matters. From 27 to 29 May, Vinexpo Asia 2025 gathered 8,998 trade participants at Marina Bay Sands, reinforcing its position as both a business catalyst and a strategic forum for market orientation and collective foresight. The opening ceremony, attended by Singapore's Minister of State (MOS) for Foreign Affairs and Trade & Industry, Gan Siow Huang, and 15 ambassadors, set the tone for an event anchored in economic diplomacy. In her keynote address, MOS Gan underlined Singapore's commitment to " working with like-minded partners around the world" to " uphold free and open trade" — a message that echoes across the exhibition hall. " The wine and spirits industry is at a global turning point," says Rodolphe Lameyse, CEO of Vinexposium. " With so many uncertainties reshaping global trade, Southeast Asia emerges as a new consumption continent. This is no time for solo moves — it's about playing as a team. And Vinexpo Asia offers precisely the field for that. Our responsibility is clear: bring structure, perspective, and clarity." Vinexpo Asia 2025 underscored Southeast Asia's strengthening position as a dynamic and collective force in the global wine and spirits trade. From Thailand to Vietnam, Malaysia to Indonesia and the Philippines, the ASEAN bloc demonstrated a shared momentum driven by demographic growth and economic ambition. The presence of ambassadors and institutional representatives throughout the show further reinforced the regional cohesion and international relevance of the event. As MOS Gan noted in her address, the region is " home to over 600 million people and a young, rising middle class, and is expected to become the world's fourth-largest economy by 2030." She also highlighted that " alcohol beverage revenue in Southeast Asia is projected to grow by about 10% from 2023 to 2027". This confirms the region's shift from emerging to essential. As a regional trade hub, Singapore provides an ideal environment to gather Southeast Asian buying power in one place. With 4,253 meetings scheduled, Vinexpo Asia confirmed its role as an engine for qualified business encounters. The 2025 edition stood out for the intensity and quality of exchanges facilitated by Vinexposium's business matching platform — a tool widely praised by exhibitors for its efficiency. Buyers came from over 60 countries, with a particularly strong showing from Southeast Asia. Local professionals from Singapore were joined by decision-makers from Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines — underscoring the region's centrality to the show. " It's always very exciting to be at Vinexpo Asia, it's an annual activity for us. We meet our partners and explore new brands to introduce in Malaysia. Being here speeds up the process," says Wilson Khor, Marketing Brand Manager at Luen Heng F&B. Among the exhibitors, national and regional pavilions from France, Italy, China, the USA and Australia drew sustained attention. For many, the show delivered concrete commercial outcomes. " Vinexpo Asia 2025 has proven to be an exceptional platform for Italian wines. The quality of the crowd—comprised of highly knowledgeable buyers, distributors, and industry leaders, was truly impressive,", affirms Giorgio Calveri, Director of the Italian Trade Agency (ITA) in Singapore. " We met the Asian importers we work with and confirmed some orders. We also met potential distributors from Malaysia and Cambodia, which are countries we are not represented in," explains Vivien Gay, Director of International Sales at Silver Oak Winery (United States). Beyond the show floor, Singapore's vibrant gastronomic scene provided an ideal backdrop for after-hours networking, a natural extension of Vinexpo Asia's blend of business, intelligence and hospitality. GUIDING THE TRADE THROUGH COMPLEXITY That same spirit of openness and dialogue continued at Vinexpo Academy — the event's strategic compass, where over 30 conferences and masterclasses addressed the forces transforming the industry, from shifting consumption patterns to emerging distribution models and new regional players. " Vinexpo Academy is the number one reason I attend Vinexposium events," shares Nimmi Malhotra, Wine Communicator. " Vinexpo Asia is a world-class ideas forum — a space for thought leadership and intellectual growth." The second issue of Voice of the Industry, Vinexposium's editorial publication, was launched onsite with a sharp focus on Asia. Distributed throughout the show, it provided expert analysis, data-driven foresight, and field-based observations. Meanwhile, four episodes of the Voice by Vinexposium podcast were recorded live in Singapore, covering key themes such as the reinvention of Southeast Asia's distribution models, the rise of premium spirits, and how identity and collectability are redefining brand strategies. Episodes will be released post-event. " In a world of shifting alliances and uncertain flows, Vinexposium stands as a trusted third party for the global drinks trade — a beacon where producers, buyers, and policymakers can connect, exchange, and build long-term strategies," concludes Rodolphe Lameyse, CEO of Vinexposium." And following our DNA, w e do business with taste, heart and soul," he adds. This strategic momentum continues in 2026, as Vinexpo Asia returns to Hong Kong from 26 to 28 May, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center (HKCEC). Alternating between Singapore and Hong Kong, the event ensures a consistent presence across two distinct ecosystems, ASEAN and Greater China — each with its own dynamics and opportunities.
