Mum who abused son so badly he had to have his legs amputated to be freed early from prison
A mother who abused her child so badly he had to have his legs amputated is to be released early from prison.
Jody Simpson and Anthony Smith were both jailed for 10 years in 2018 for torturing their son, Tony Hudgell, who is now 10.
He was just 41 days old when he was assaulted by the pair and left untreated and in agony for 10 days.
The attack caused multiple fractures, dislocations and blunt trauma to the face, leading to organ failure, toxic shock and sepsis.
The damage meant both his legs had to be amputated.
Simpson was due to be released on licence at the halfway point of her prison sentence in August 2022.
However, then justice secretary Dominic Raab referred her case to the Parole Board and her release was put on hold.
A spokesperson for the Parole Board on Wednesday confirmed Simpson was set to be released.
Paula Hudgell, Tony's adoptive mother, criticised the decision in a social media post.
"Tony has life long injuries every day he suffers due to her hands," she wrote on X.
Tony's case led to a public outcry and calls for child abusers to be given life behind bars.
Tory MP Tom Tugendhat, who led a campaign for the changes, which are also known as Tony's Law, said on X: "I'm backing Tony as he faces the early release of his abuser - his birth mum.
"Tony lives every day with the pain caused by her crimes as a baby. We must do more to protect children like him."
Tony has since gone on to be a successful fundraiser for charity - for which he has been honoured by the Royal Family.
A statement from the Parole Board said: "We can confirm that a panel of the Parole Board has directed the release of Jody Simpson following an oral hearing.
"Parole Board decisions are solely focused on what risk a prisoner could represent to the public if released and whether that risk is manageable in the community.
"A panel will carefully examine a huge range of evidence, including details of the original crime, and any evidence of behaviour change, as well as explore the harm done and impact the crime has had on the victims."
It added: "Parole reviews are undertaken thoroughly and with extreme care. Protecting the public is our number one priority."
A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: "This was a horrific crime that saw Tony Hudgell mercilessly tortured by his birth parents and our thoughts remain with him and his loved ones.
"Now that the independent Parole Board has directed her release, Jody Simpson will be subject to strict supervision and licence conditions. She faces an immediate return to prison if she breaks the rules."

Ilyas Akhtar, from Slough, has also been accused of two counts of arson, against a family activity centre and an ice rink, and carrying out a bomb hoax at an Asda supermarket. This is the shocking moment a lorry driver is caught driving with no hands on the wheel while he rolls a cigarette. The careless driver was captured on film as part of Gloucestershire Police's Operation Tramline on the M25. Up to 58 drivers were stopped for offences that included not wearing seatbelts, using a phone behind the wheel, alongside pulling trailers with insecure loads. Under the road safety initiative, undercover officers drove in an unmarked HGV lorry between May 6 and May 8, recording and i dentifying a number of traffic offences. These officers then intercepted the offending vehicle, pulling it over and dealing with the driver. Alongside capturing the careless cigarette-roller, officers also pulled over a tow truck that was found to have several major defects which included no brakes, cuts in tyres, bald tyres, cracked suspension springs and an insecure load. A prohibition notice was issued to the driver as the vehicle was not roadworthy and could have put other motorists at risk. Two motorists were also pulled over for towing vehicles while in the third lane of the motorway which is not permitted. The offences were handled under the Traffic Offence Reports and summons. These can potentially result in a fine of £100 for failing to wear a seatbelt, £200 and six penalty points for using a handheld mobile device and a £300 fine for driving a vehicle in contravention of a prohibition. Penalties for driving whilst disqualified can also lead to a fine of up to £5,000 and up to six months' imprisonment. Sergeant Matt Firth from the Roads Policing Unit said: 'Reducing the numbers of people killed or seriously injured on our roads continues to be a priority for Gloucestershire Constabulary. 'We will continue to run these operations to detect and deter those who choose to drive in this manner remembering that any of us or our loved ones could be impacted by such behaviours whilst using the county's roads.' Nigel Farage's bust-up with Zia Yusuf is only the latest in a string of extraordinary sackings, resignations and break-ups in his political career. Mr Yusuf, the former Reform UK chairman, quit on Thursday following a disagreement over a Reform MP's call for a burka ban. But Mr Farage has fallen out with multiple senior figures in the party and its predecessors, Ukip and the Brexit Party. Godfrey Bloom Nigel Farage was forced to suspend the Ukip party whip from economist Godfrey Bloom after he described women at a party conference in 2013 as 'sluts'. Mr Bloom also hit journalist Michael Crick over the head with the conference brochure. Mr Farage, furious that one of his conference speeches had been overshadowed, said: 'We can't put up with it. We can't have any one individual, however fun or flamboyant or entertaining or amusing they are, we cannot have any one individual destroying Ukip's national conference and that is what he's done today.' Douglas Carswell Douglas Carswell was Ukip's first MP after defecting from the Conservatives in 2014. After he accused Mr Farage in an interview of acting like a 'messiah', Mr Lowe lost the party whip and was reported to police over allegations he had physically threatened Zia Yusuf, then party chairman. Mr Lowe said at the time: 'I am 67 years old, and I have a 67-year-long unblemished record with the law. These are false allegations, designed to maliciously smear my name and ruin my reputation after I dared to bruise [Nigel] Farage's ego.'
