Mind The Gap And Timing Also While Boarding Train
New Delhi: Boarding or alighting from a moving train is a deadly risk. In Delhi alone, this has taken a toll of 216 lives and injured 93 in 27 months. Data released by the Delhi division of Railway Protection Force highlights a troubling pattern of accidents occurring at railway stations, most of them caused by passengers trying to board or exit moving trains.
In 2023, 98 people died and 37 others sustained injuries and the statistics for 2024 are similarly grim — 105 died and 48 were injured. And in the first three months of 2025,13 people lost their lives and eight were injured.
One such tragic incident took place in March , when a 62-year-old man died after being run over while trying to catch a moving train at New Delhi Railway Station. "He was attempting to catch a train to Amritsar," an RPF officer said.
"He was still on the pedestrian bridge footbridge when most of the train had already left the station. He ran to catch the last coach but slipped and fell under the train."
One common reason why people recklessly rushed for their trains was because they arrived at the station just moments before their train's departure. In other cases, individuals alighted during short halts and hurried to get back in when the train moved again.

"For instance, during a two-minute stop, some passengers got off to buy water bottles. The train had started moving when he tried to board again. They slipped and fell," an officer explained.
The policemen noted that travellers, especially those heading to work or attending to urgent matters, often found themselves rushing and taking unnecessary risks. Some passengers even attempt to disembark while the train is approaching the platform.
Accidents also occur when trains are yet to come to a complete halt at the platform but passengers rush to climb into their compartments.
In an effort to curb such incidents and save lives, the railway police launched the Jeevan Raksha operation across various railway stations where RPF personnel risk their own lives to save others. The initiative had some success. In 2023, RPF personnel saved 125 individuals who were in danger of being injured or killed by trains.
In 2024, the force rescued 23 people, and in 2025 so far, two lives have been saved.
Another RPF officer said that awareness drives were being carried out to educate passengers about the dangers of boarding or deboarding from moving trains. "Our personnel regularly inform passengers about such risks. Verbal warnings are issued, and officers are stationed near moving trains on the platforms to physically stop people from attempting to get on or off," the officer claimed.
Patrolling has been intensified during train arrivals and departures to check careless passenger behaviour. "This allows us to react quickly in case someone tries to board a moving train or accidentally falls. Immediate response can often prevent serious injuries or fatalities," the officer said.
Despite these efforts, officials emphasised that the ultimate responsibility lies with the passengers. They urged the public to prioritise safety and avoid taking reckless decisions.

Stampede Case: No action against RCB, DNA till June 12, A-G assures HC as Judge hears pleas for relief
The Karnataka High Court posted for June 12, Thursday, petitions from the Royal Challengers Sports Limited, the franchise of RCB and the event manager DNA Entertainment Network praying for quashing of the FIR filed against their executives in connection with the June 4 stampede outside of Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru that claimed 11 lives and left scores of others injured. Justice SR Krishna Kumar posted the case to hear for interim relief after eliciting an assurance from Advocate General Shashi Kiran Shetty that the government would not take any precipitative action against the petitioners till the matter was heard at the next date. Railways reports spike in cases of vehicles damaging boom barriers at level-crossings
Recurring cases of vehicles hitting boom barriers at railway level crossings in Tiruchi Railway Division is causing concern to the administration as this affects safety besides delaying trains. These cases have been reported despite awareness programmes being conducted regularly by the railways emphasising to the general public the need to strictly adhere to rules at the level-crossing gates and installation of caution boards a few metres away to alert road users. Railway Protection Force sources said over 100 cases of vehicles hitting boom barriers causing damage had been reported in the last 17 months within the Tiruchi Railway Division, which maintains 493 level-crossing gates in 10 districts. Ninety cases were reported during the calendar year 2024 (from January to December) and 39 cases January to May this year. The jurisdictional Railway Protection Force authorities had booked cases against the violators and slapped fine on the guilty. Such cases of vehicles crashing into boom barriers and damaging them have been reported along different broad gauge sections under the Tiruchi Division. However, such cases were reported more along the broad gauge stretches from Sirkazhi to Vaitheeswarankoil, Chidambaram-Puduchathiram and between Kumbakonam and Darasuram. All the three stretches are along the Villupuram-Thanjavur main line section which is a one of the major routes in the limits of the Tiruchi Division. The Railway Protection Force, in association with other departments, regularly conducts awareness campaigns on the precautions to be strictly followed at the level-crossing gates. Wherever there had been increase in the number of such incidents, steps are taken to address the issue and carry out campaigns at regular intervals. Necessary provisions of the Railway Act are invoked against the violators and fine amount imposed and realised from them, said RPF sources.
