5 skiers found dead on Swiss mountain near Zermatt

ZERMATT : Five skiers have been found dead on a Swiss mountain close to the luxury ski resort of Zermatt, after emergency services were alerted to some abandoned skis at 4,000m, the prosecutors' office in Canton Valais said today.
Skiers notified the authorities yesterday afternoon about the skis found on the slopes of the Rimpfischhorn mountain, east of Zermatt and south of the village of Saas Fee.
Rescue workers found the bodies near the Adlergletscher glacier after air and ground searches in the area in southwest Switzerland near the border with Italy, the prosecutor's office said.
Local airline Air Zermatt said that three of the bodies were found on the debris of an avalanche a few hundred metres below where the skis were spotted.
The other two were discovered higher up the 4,199m-high mountain, it added.

The airline's aircraft are deployed for search missions and other emergencies.
The identities of the five have not been established yet, and an investigation has been launched into what caused the accident, Valais prosecutors said in a statement.
Zermatt is one of Switzerland's premier Alpine resorts, visited by affluent British and other European skiers.

'Limited client information', such as names, e-mail addresses and countries, had been obtained, Cartier said in the email. 'The affected information did not include any passwords, credit card details or other banking information,' it said, noting it had since contained the issue. The company said it had further enhanced the protection of its systems and data, as well as informed the relevant authorities, and was also working with 'leading external cybersecurity experts'. Cartier did not respond to a request for comment. Julius Cerniauskas, CEO of web intelligence firm Oxylabs, said the breach showed no brand is safe from cybercrime. 'Attackers are becoming more opportunistic and sophisticated, targeting brands that hold valuable customer data, not just credit card numbers,' he said. US lingerie company Victoria's Secret today disclosed that a security incident relating to its information technology systems had forced it to temporarily shut down its website for a few days last week. Victoria's Secret said the breach did not impact its financial results for the first quarter or cause a material disruption to its operations, but warned that its second quarter could be hit by the additional expenses incurred following the incident. British retailer Marks & Spencer said last month a 'highly sophisticated and targeted' cyberattack in April will cost it about £300 million in lost profits. Fashion brand The North Face, owned by VF Corporation, has also emailed some customers, saying it discovered a 'small-scale' attack in April this year. The company told customers the hackers used 'credential stuffing', trying usernames and passwords stolen from another data breach in the hope customers have reused the credentials across multiple accounts, the BBC said today. VF Corp did not respond to a Reuters request for comment. London department store Harrods also said last month hackers had attempted to break into its systems, following incidents at Marks & Spencer, and the Co-op Group.

Morning drama in Sarawak town as 55-year-old climbs hotel roof, rescued unharmed
BELAGA, June 2 — A 55-year-old man was successfully rescued from the rooftop of a hotel here on Sunday morning, following a swift and coordinated response by emergency personnel. According to Bintulu Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) zone chief Wan Kamarudin Wan Ahmad, the incident occurred at Hotel Sing Soon Huat along Jalan Pasar. The man had reportedly climbed onto the hotel roof, which prompted members of the public to alert Bomba to the situation. A rescue team was immediately despatched to the scene after Bomba received a distress call at 8.53am. 'Rescue personnel managed to safely calm and persuade the man to come down without harm,' Wan Kamarudin said. The individual was later handed over to the police for further action. Rock collapse at Indonesia quarry kills at least 10, search for missing continues
JAKARTA, May 31 — At least 10 people in Indonesia's West Java were killed and six injured yesterday following a rock collapse at a quarry, the disaster agency said, with search efforts ongoing to find people buried beneath the rubble. The collapse took place in Cirebon in West Java, where television footage showed excavators working to move huge rocks and personnel moving bags containing bodies to an ambulance. Kompas TV earlier said about 10 people were missing. The national disaster management agency said heavy machinery, including three excavators, were also buried under rocks and operations would continue on Saturday. It gave no estimate on the number of people missing.
