A recent PwC South Africa report revealed that 59% of South Africans embrace hybrid work, despite employers' efforts to bring them fully back to the office.
While this transformation has redefined how South African businesses function, it has also exposed significant gaps in IT infrastructure and people management. Many businesses struggle with geographically dispersed teams, real-time collaboration, and consistent performance across physical locations.
System fragmentation remains one of the most pressing issues for hybrid teams. Departments use different platforms for communication, customer data, and task tracking, and they often lose, duplicate, or delay information. This lack of integration leads to poor version control and time-consuming processes, ultimately slowing down team achievement.
Without streamlined data management, hybrid teams face difficulty sharing crucial information in real time. This fragmentation of IT systems not only hampers day-to-day workflows but also puts immense pressure on decision-makers.
A Deloitte Africa report shows remote employees face decision-making delays due to ineffective communication channels. Without real-time visibility, hybrid teams struggle to coordinate tasks and stay aligned. Miscommunication, scattered updates, and the absence of centralized workflows hinder outcomes and reduce team efficiency. These inefficiencies have an enormous impact on small businesses because they can easily drain money, time, and momentum.
Beyond processes, hybrid environments also affect company culture. Remote staff often miss out on spontaneous idea sharing and team bonding moments. This isolation can reduce morale, especially among new hires and younger professionals.

Subscriber losses mount for MultiChoice as financial challenges escalate

MultiChoice, a leading entertainment company, has revealed a staggering loss of 2.8 million active linear subscribers over the past two financial years, as it released its results for the year ending March 31, 2025. In the reporting period linear subscribers were down 1.2m, or 8%, to 14.5m active subscribers, with the loss evenly split between South African (0.6m) and Rest of Africa (0.6m). The group said although reflecting an improvement on 2024 trends, "this indicates ongoing broad-based pressure across the group's entire customer base". "The past two financial years have been a period of significant financial disruption for economies, corporates and consumers across sub-Saharan Africa due to challenging macro-economic factors. Combined with the impact of structural industry changes in video entertainment such as the rise of piracy, streaming services and social media, this has materially affected the overall performance of the MultiChoice Group," it said.

Image: Supplied / GCIS President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to meet with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) Summit in Canada this weekend. The meeting will focus on key issues, including the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and US-SA tariffs. Ramaphosa's meeting with Trump comes after South Africa submitted a revised framework proposal to the US, aiming to expand trade and investment relations between the two countries. The US imposed tariffs on South African imports in April, with a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs of 30% against South African exports. The tariffs were part of a broader set of 'liberation day' tariffs imposed by Trump on all US trading partners. However, they were later reduced to a base rate of 10%, with the expectation that countries would use the 90 days to propose solutions addressing the US's trade deficit concerns. During their previous meeting, Ramaphosa emphasised the importance of the US's role in the G20 Summit and invited Trump to attend the G20 Leaders' Summit in Johannesburg later this year. Trump agreed to attend, and Ramaphosa sees this as a positive development for bilateral relations. According to sources close to Ramaphosa, the meeting agenda will include discussions on AGOA, providing duty-free access to the US market for some African products. The agreement is set to expire in September, and South Africa is eager to see it renewed. Ramaphosa will also raise concerns about US-SA tariffs, urging the US not to increase them beyond the current 10% if negotiations on a new trade framework are not concluded by July 9. The sources further said the meeting between Ramaphosa and Trump was significant, given the current state of US-SA trade relations. 'The business sector has expressed concerns about the rise of tariffs, and Ramaphosa is under pressure to come up with answers. A successful meeting could help to ease tensions and pave the way for improved trade relations between the two countries,' the source added. Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya did not respond to questions as to what to expect at the upcoming meeting. However, Ramaphosa, while speaking to journalists on Tuesday after he announced the date for the National Dialogue on various issues affecting the country, confirmed that he would be meeting Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Ramaphosa said he was invited by Carney, who holds the presidency of the G7, and would also use the opportunity to talk about the G20 Summit to be hosted by South Africa in November, where Trump will take over the presidency. 'We're going to use it as a platform to begin to consolidate what we want to achieve in November when the leaders' summit takes place here (in Johannesburg),' he said. Last month, Ramaphosa and his delegation included Minister of Trade and Industry Parks Tau, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen, and International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola. His goals for that meeting included resetting US-SA relations and beginning serious engagement with the US on trade and investment. Despite losing its title as the world's gold capital, South Africa continues to benefit from the rising popularity of gold as a safe haven, with implications for the local economy and currency Image: Ai Despite having lost its crown as the gold capital of the world, South Africa is still indirectly – and psychologically – benefitting from the yellow metal's gain in popularity as a safe haven. As of 12.30pm on Tuesday afternoon, the precious metal was rising towards $3,340 an ounce, although off its $3 500 record high in April, it is still 'holding up,' as Dr Azar Jammine, director and chief economist at Econometrix, said. Gold is 'holding up' as its underlying value is a hedge against economic uncertainty, said Jammine. Speaking with IOL, Jammine noted that gold is still benefiting both the local currency, as well as gold miners. The rand is still flirting around the R17.70 to the dollar level and could drop into the R16 to R16.99 range, according to Old Mutual chief economist, Johann Els. Gold has a long history in South Africa, which was once the world's biggest gold miner, losing that crown to China in 2006. The fact that it is no longer even in the top ten is, as Jammine said, 'very sad'. Gold's history in South Africa dates back to the late 1800s, when a rush saw an effective shanty town developed in what is now Johannesburg. Pilgrims Rest and Barberton are historical sites for mining, with tourists still being able to pan for alluvial gold in Pilgrims Rest in Mpumalanga's Drakensburg area. South Africa cannot claim to be gold's oldest source though, as the Royal Mint said that gold was first smelted in Egypt in 3 600 BC. The metal's history includes the first gold coins being struck in what was then Lydia, Asia Minor, in 600 BC. The Minerals Council of South Africa notes on its website that, even though the Witwatersrand Basin remains the world's largest gold resource, more than half of the South African gold mining industry is 'marginal'. In the 20th century, significant gold mines were established on the West Wits line, and towns like Carletonville and Klerksdorp became vital centres around the renowned gold mines, it added. However, the Council said that the prominence of the gold sector began to decline in the early 21st century as mining operations reached deeper levels to access rich reef patches. Joburg's oldest working mine, incidentally, is at Gold Reef City. Jammine said that South Africa is benefitting from the safe haven appeal of the yellow metal mentally. The price has a psychological value on shares and the currency, said Jammine. He added that the perception is that South Africa is still a major gold producer and, as people think South Africa will have a large benefit from the metal, there is a psychological advantage for the rand and gold mining shares.
