Chelsea hero Paul Canoville in hospital after ‘serious decline'
Chelsea icon Paul Canoville has been hospitalised after his physical health suffered 'a serious decline'. Canoville, 63, blazed the trail as Chelsea's first black player and became a cult hero for the club, making over 100 appearances during the 1980s. Post-retirement, he has become renowned for his efforts as a campaigner against racism after suffering abuse as a player. The Paul Canoville Foundation was launched in 2015 with this cause in mind, working to improve the lives of young people in London. The Foundation has today come out to reveal a concerning health update about the former winger. 'It is with a heavy heart that I share an update on the health of our founder, Paul Canoville,' a statement read. 'Paul is currently in hospital due to a serious decline in his physical health, which has also taken a significant toll on his mental well-being. 'As someone who has overcome extraordinary challenges throughout his life, Paul remains determined - but he now needs time, care, and space to recover.' The statement adds that Canoville has not been able to keep up public appearances due to this latest health setback, something which has impacted his income. As such, the Foundation has asked for donations to help support both him and the Foundation. 'His recent absence from school visits and, most heartbreakingly, the Show Racism the Red Card reception at Downing Street earlier this week, has been deeply upsetting for him,' the statement continues. 'We also want to prepare friends and supporters that Paul is very unlikely to attend the premiere of the new documentary about his life tomorrow evening (Thursday) at Regent Street Cinema - something he had been immensely looking forward to. 'Out of respect for his need to rest and heal, we kindly ask that people refrain from contacting Paul directly at this time. 'Any messages of support can be shared as comments on our social posts and we will ensure Paul sees these once well enough. Paul's regular public appearances are an important part of his income. 'While he takes this time away, we're asking for donations to help ease that burden and continue the Foundation's impactful work. 'Thank you for your compassion, your understanding, and your continued support.' You can donate to the Foundation through its JustGiving page.

Cameron Smith's truth bomb for Slater after Queensland coach accused of 'weak' act
Queensland legend Cameron Smith has conceded his old Maroons side would have kicked to Spencer Leniu in State of Origin Game 1 after Paul Gallen accused Billy Slater's side of dodging the confrontation. NSW were utterly dominant in their 18-6 Game 1 victory with Slater's side lucky not to concede more points due to some wayward Blues kicking. The NSW forwards, led by player-of-the-match Payne Haas, bullied the Queensland side and made an early statement with Daly Cherry-Evans unable to kick the Maroons out of danger throughout the clash. And one telling moment during the clash was the Queensland side avoiding the kick-off to Spencer Leniu. Queensland had labelled Leniu as public enemy No.1 ahead of the Suncorp clash with The Courier Mail even going as far to suggest the Maroons players should 'smash this Blues grub'. However, the Queenslanders deliberately avoided Leniu during his introduction to the game with the move backfiring. NSW coach Laurie Daley opted to throw Leniu on with 10 minutes left in the first-half as the Blues were leading 10-0. But instead of kicking to Leniu off the restart, Queensland made a deliberate decision to switch sides and kick to the right. This robbed Leniu of the chance of taking the first hit-up off the kick-off. With Queensland's forwards failing to muscle up during the clash, the Leniu moment was seen as a win for NSW. Coach Slater told Channel Nine that the team opted to change their tactic because Valentine Holmes was out of position when kicking it to the left. However, Gallen wasn't buying this excuse. Speaking on 100% Footy, Gallen asked Queensland legend Smith what his dominant team would have done if Leniu had come on and his side needed a lift. And Smith eventually conceded his team would have made a statement during his era. "I know your mentality. Mal Meninga's went away from him," Gallen said to Smith. And the Queensland great agreed the his famous Origin side would have probably gone out to send a message. "I don't know the mindset of the current footy side. The teams that I played in, we would have kicked off at Spencer," Smith said. "And gone after him a little bit, just to send a message. I didn't think it was as big as an issue that a lot of people made it out to be. But in the teams that I played in we would have kicked to him." Spencer Leniu when he realised Queensland weren't going to kick off to him 😳😂 #stateoforigin — Coach Liam (@tacklingcoach) May 28, 2025 RELATED: Family detail as Craig Bellamy tipped to make shock switch to coach side Nathan Cleary act comes to light after Panthers axe Test player Smith isn't the only Queensland great to have pointed this out. Corey Parker questioned the mentality of the team of the team and felt there might need to be personnel changes to ignite the side. Speaking on SEN Radio, Parker felt the likes of Corey Horsburgh would add more mongrel to the side. 'I'm happy for DCE to stay in the team but I'm making change to other players,' Parker said last week. 'I want Corey Horsburgh in the side, we should have kicked off on Spencer Leniu. If Jaydn Su'A and Horsburgh were in the team and we said to kick off on Leniu, they would have been frothing, eyeballs rolling in the head.' New Zealand international Kieran Foran agreed the Queensland side let themselves down in that moment. 'It would show a mentality from Queensland if they did kick to him,' Foran added. 'Watching the game, watching how NSW just went after Collins, that really set a tone, it was a statement. QLD probably have got to look in there and ask why they didn't do the same thing, why didn't they kick off to Spencer? It can inspire a group and lift one another. NSW did that better than QLD to be honest.' Slater is set to make changes for Game 2 with the biggest talking point around their captain. Calls are growing for Cherry-Evans to be dropped from the Queensland side after a poor Game 1, which saw the 36-year-old struggle with the intensity of the contest. However, Cherry-Evans responded with arguably his best performance in months on the weekend having helped steer the Manly Sea Eagles to a 34-6 win over the Broncos.

Arsenal in talks with Partey over new deal as Jorginho and Sterling depart
LONDON (AP) — Arsenal is in talks with Thomas Partey to extend the midfielder's contract, the club said Wednesday, while confirming the departure of a slew of other players including Jorginho and Raheem Sterling. Partey's contract is due to expire on June 30 and Arsenal said 'discussions are on going.' The Ghana international has been with Arsenal since 2020. Italy midfielder Jorginho, Scotland left back Kieran Tierney, Brazilian goalkeeper Neto and Sterling — at one stage a key player for England — are among those confirmed to be leaving Arsenal. Sterling was only on a season-long loan from Chelsea. Arsenal has just finished second in the Premier League for the third straight season. ___ AP soccer:
