Art Rooney supported original tush-push ban — but will Steelers vote for Packers revision?
The Steelers could decide the fate of the dreaded tush-push made famous by the Philadelphia Eagles — all thanks to the Packers' revised proposal.
The Packers' first attempt at banning the rule change failed, but many argued that it was the language of the proposal that was the issue — which Green Bay altered to potentially entice more votes to ban the play. Back in April, owners decided to postpone the vote until the NFL Spring League Meeting — a two-day event from May 20 to 21.
Steelers President Art Rooney explained that Pittsburgh supported the original language of the Packers' proposal — eliminating the ability to push a QB on a QB sneak — but will he support the alteration in Green Bay's revised ban?
"In the Packers' new revision, which will be voted on this Tuesday and Wednesday, pushing and pulling any ball carrier would be banned — just like the NFL had it back in 2005. If other owners opposed the original ban due to language concerns, this change should certainly alleviate that.
The change would need 24 of 32 owners to vote in favor of the ban. While the original proposal was reportedly split 16–16, there's no guarantee Pittsburgh will support the broader rule — even if the majority of the league might.

Steelers See Tom Brady Comparison With Aaron Rodgers
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Pittsburgh Steelers and Aaron Rodgers have officially agreed to terms on a one-year contract for the 2025 NFL season. It was a move that had long been expected, but took a long time to work out. Rodgers was dealing with some personal issues throughout the offseason. He openly stated that he wanted to get those issues taken care of before committing to a team. Now, he's all-in with the Steelers. Following the move to officially sign with Pittsburgh, there are a lot of questions surrounding what to expect from the team. Some expect a good year from Rodgers, while others don't think the future Hall of Fame quarterback will be able to make the kind of impact the team hopes. Aaron Rodgers #8 of the New York Jets looks to throw a pass during pregame warmups prior to an NFL football game against the Buffalo Bills at MetLife Stadium on September 11, 2023 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. More Photo bySpeaking of what the team is hoping for, an intriguing take has been shared from ESPN analyst Booger McFarland. Read more: Steelers Could Make Huge Splash With Former Aaron Rodgers Teammate He shared that the Steelers are hoping to see a Tom Brady like impact from Rodgers. When Brady signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following an illustrious tenure with the New England Patriots, he brought a Super Bowl to his new team. Can Rodgers do the same? "Make no mistake about this: they're not bringing in Aaron Rodgers here to go 9-8," McFarland said. "They're not bringing Aaron Rodgers in there to win one playoff game. When you have Minkah Fitzpatrick and Cam Heyward and T.J. Watt, you're going to geet a 41-year-old quarterback, who's a Hall of Fame quarterback, to see if he can have some similar effect that Tom Brady had in Tampa when he took them to a Super Bowl." McFarland did share later that he doesn't think Pittsburgh has enough, even after signing Rodgers, to win a Super Bowl. However, that is their goal with the move. This is the Steelers going all-in on trying to contend. They're doing everything they can to give themselves a chance to win it all. Read more: Steelers' Aaron Rodgers Has Chance at Massive NFL Milestone Last season with the New York Jets, Rodgers played well. The team as a whole did not, but Rodgers completed 63 percent of his pass attempts for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. It will be interesting to see what kind of impact Rodgers has on Pittsburgh this season. More than likely, it will be his farewell tour to the NFL before riding off into the sunset of retirement. Hopefully, he can put together a strong season and help lead the Steelers on a deep run in the postseason. For more Pittsburgh Steelers and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Steelers star linebacker TJ Watt skips the start of mandatory minicamp
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Aaron Rodgers might be ready to take the practice field for the Pittsburgh Steelers. T.J. Watt is not. The star outside linebacker skipped the start of mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. Watt likely is eyeing a new deal as he enters the final year of his current contract. The seven-time Pro Bowler and 2021 NFL Defensive Player of the Year signed a four-year extension in September 2021 that was scheduled to pay him $112 million and made him the highest-paid defender in the league at the time. That number has been eclipsed several times over the last four years, including by Cleveland star Myles Garrett, who signed a deal in March that made him the most well-compensated non-quarterback in the league at $40 million a season. The decision to skip minicamp is a change from Watt's approach in 2021, when he did a 'hold in' during both minicamp and training camp before agreeing to a contract on the eve of the regular season. 'We expect him back at some point,' defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said Tuesday. 'We don't get caught up (in that) ... He's going to be in good shape (whenever he arrives).' Watt tied an NFL record by registering 22 1/2 sacks after signing the extension in 2021. He led the league in sacks again in 2023, though that number dipped to 11 1/2 last season, Watt's fewest in a year in which he didn't miss extended time because of injury since he was a rookie in 2017. Austin believes Watt's absence will provide opportunities for younger players like third-year outside linebacker Nick Herbig and rookie Jack Sawyer. Maybe, but neither has Watt's game-changing resume. Watt, who turns 31 in October, is the linchpin of a defense that has helped keep the Steelers in contention despite heavy churn at quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger's retirement in January 2022. Rodgers will get his shot after agreeing to a one-year deal last week. The four-time NFL MVP was at the team facility on Tuesday and is expected to be on the field when afternoon practice begins. ___ AP NFL:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Linked to $84M 2-Time Pro Bowl Cornerback Jaire Alexander
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Linked to $84M 2-Time Pro Bowl Cornerback Jaire Alexander originally appeared on Athlon Sports. A bombshell was dropped on the NFL world on Monday when league insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Green Bay Packers were releasing two-time All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander. Advertisement 'The #Packers are releasing star CB Jaire Alexander today, sources say,' Rapoport wrote on his official X account. 'The #Packers and Jaire Alexander agreed to explore a potential trade this spring, while a restructured contract was also discussed. In the end, Green Bay and Alexander move on with a clean break.' The question for the Buccaneers is obvious. Would Alexander fit in a Tampa Bay secondary that needs to show drastic improvement from last season? The answer is simple ... and complicated. The Bucs spent their second- and third-round draft picks on cornerbacks. Benjamin Morrison and Jacob Parrish are expected to be contributors next season. But will they have the same impact that a two-time Pro Bowl veteran would have? Probably not. Advertisement Alexander is just 28 and still has a lot of football left in him. His departure from the Packers wasn't performance-related, but due to a hefty $25 million cap hit for 2025. The former Louisville Cardinals defender has dealt with injuries recently, however. Over the past two years, Alexander has played in just 14 total regular-season games due to numerous injuries, including groin, back, shoulder and knee issues. He missed the Packers' final eight games of 2024, including their Wild Card round loss to the Eagles. When he's been healthy, Alexander has been one of the best at his position. Across seven playoff games, he's posted 28 tackles, three interceptions and five pass breakups.
