
LG Innotek launches world's first 5G satellite communication vehicle module
LG Innotek said Wednesday it has developed the world's first third-generation 5G communication modules for vehicles that supports the 5G New Radio Non-Terrestrial Network, enabling high-speed data transmission, which is expected to accelerate the advancement of autonomous driving.
The latest module supports 5G NR-NTN, a mobile communication network that operates on low Earth orbit satellites, allowing real-time transmission of large volumes of data. It serves as a key component for software-defined vehicles and autonomous driving.
Existing 5G modules for vehicles have been limited by a narrow bandwidth of around 0.2 megahertz, making it difficult to transmit the large volumes of data required for autonomous and connected cars.
In contrast, LG Innnotek's new module boasts a wider bandwidth of around 30 megahertz, allowing data to transfer hundreds of times faster while dramatically reducing latency to a few hundred milliseconds, the company explained.
When equipped in a vehicle, the module enables fast, uninterrupted transmission and reception of large volumes of data, including voice, images and video, anytime and anywhere.
This means cars can have seamless communication even in remote areas such as deserts or mountains or during natural disasters. In emergency situations, the module allows rapid transmission of distress signals and vehicle status information, helping the driver to be safely rescued.
LG Innotek plans to mass produce the latest module by the first quarter of next year, with goal to expand its footprint in the global automotive connectivity market. The firm is currently promoting the product to carmakers in North America and Japan.
'Vehicle communication modules, along with automotive lighting, will be the core to LG Innotek's auto parts business,' said Yoo Byaeng-kuk, head of the automotive components business unit. 'We will continue to introduce innovative components that deliver differentiated customer value and grow this vehicle communication module business into a multitrillion-won business.'

Hanwha offloads Eutelsat stake as Starlink rival seeks new investors
South Korea's Hanwha Systems said on Thursday it was selling its entire 5.4 percent stake in Eutelsat for 77.6 million euros ($88.5 million), as the Franco-British satellite operator seeks new investors. Eutelsat has garnered unprecedented attention this year from governments looking for home-grown alternatives to SpaceX's Starlink for satellite internet connectivity. The company is working on a new financing plan to fund the second generation of its low Earth orbit (LEO) OneWeb satellites and to fulfil commitments to the European Union's IRIS² project. It has piled up hundreds of millions of euros in losses, particularly from its waning video business, while its 2023 acquisition of OneWeb has yet to yield the results it had hoped for due to competition and delayed deployment of technology. Finance chief Christophe Caudrelier said in May that Eutelsat was looking for capital investors. Hanwha's shares were offered at 3.00 euros ($3.42) apiece, representing a 13.9 percent discount to Eutelsat's closing price of 3.48 euros on Wednesday, a term sheet from bookrunner Citi showed. It also marks a steep 70.5 percent loss on Hanwha's initial $300 million investment made in OneWeb in 2021, with the stake now valued at just $88.5 million. Eutelsat's Paris-listed shares fell 14.8 percent by 0920 GMT. Only 21 percent of Eutelsat's shares are publicly traded, making the stock prone to sharp price swings. However, the yield on its 2029 9.75 percent bond fell to 7.71 percent, showing a positive shift in bondholder confidence. Hanwha said the sale, which was set to be concluded on Thursday, was not driven by an investment perspective but by a strategic shift to focus more on its core business operations. "This decision reflects a long-term strategy to concentrate on defense-related satellites and military communications, rather than on civilian satellite operations and services," Hanwha said in a statement to Reuters. A representative for the South Korean company resigned from Eutelsat's board in April, signalling its diminishing involvement with the satellite operator. Major overhaul When asked by Reuters, Eutelsat said none of the other shareholders had expressed interest in selling their shares. A company spokesperson declined to comment on media reports saying France may raise its stake in the group. Bloomberg News and The Telegraph have reported that France is considering doubling its stake in Eutelsat and is in talks to raise 1.5 billion euros. Eutelsat is also reshuffling its upper echelons. In a surprise move last month, it appointed Jean-François Fallacher as its new CEO and it is looking for a new chairperson after the current one announced his departure in February. Hanwha became a shareholder in OneWeb before it merged with Eutelsat, and it is one of OneWeb's distributors in South Korea as part of an agreement signed in 2023 with the aim of securing LEO communications for the government and providing internet access to underserved areas. Last week, South Korea's Science Ministry granted licenses to Starlink and Eutelsat OneWeb to operate in the country, with services expected to be launched soon.

Starlink to bring satellite network service to S. Korea
US Space firm SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service is set to launch in South Korea following approval from government authorities last week. The rollout will mark the beginning of low Earth orbit, or LEO, satellite networks in the country, offering high-speed connectivity in remote and unreachable areas. Seoul's Ministry of Science and ICT has approved the California-based company's cross-border supply agreement, along with similar deals involving Hanwha Systems and KT Sat, which are resellers of the UK-based Eutelsat-OneWeb, another low-orbit service provider. In Korea, foreign companies are required to sign a supply agreement with domestic telecommunication operators to offer satellite services locally. Starlink's local partner, SK Telink, said it plans to begin the service as soon as the final regulatory step is cleared — the conformity assessment of antennas it uses to receive satellite signals. Unlike conventional mobile networks, where smartphones communicate directly with base stations on the ground, current LEO satellite communication services rely on antennas to receive signals from satellites. The high-speed, low-latency internet service is expected to be particularly helpful for aircraft and maritime vessels, where internet access is limited. 'When low-orbit satellite telecommunication services launch in Korea, high-speed wifi networks will be available in airplanes and vessels," said ICT Minister Yoo Sang-im. "For sailors on long voyages, the ability to stream video and make video calls will significantly improve life on board." SK Telink said it will expand its product lineup to include maritime and aviation-specific packages, as well as packages for public institutions. The company will also collaborate with local governments to build disaster-response communication networks in remote islands, mountainous regions and other areas where telecom infrastructure is difficult to establish, or where conventional networks are vulnerable during emergencies, the company said. SpaceX launched its subsidiary Starlink Korea LLC here in 2023. Industry experts expect the service could begin as early as next month. The commercialization of LEO satellite communications is also expected to accelerate the country's transition into the next-generation 6G era, experts say. The 6G network is expected to significantly increase the number of connected devices per person. The advancement of autonomous vehicles, urban air mobility and virtual reality will require ultra-low latency and ultra-high-speed communication networks. Satellite connectivity is also expected to supplement terrestrial infrastructure, helping to meet the surging demand for data.

S. Korea approves domestic operations of Starlink, OneWeb satellite internet services
South Korea has approved requests from US space firm SpaceX and Britain's OneWeb to launch their satellite internet services in the country, the science ministry said Friday. The government approved three separate cross-border supply agreements: one between SpaceX and Starlink Korea; a second between Hanwha Systems Co. and OneWeb; and a third between KT Sat and OneWeb, the Ministry of Science and ICT said in a press release. To advance its Starlink service, SpaceX has established a local subsidiary, Starlink Korea. "The approval comes after reviewing three key factors: the potential for stable service provision, the expected impact on the domestic telecommunications market and consumer protection," the ministry said. Local frequencies became available for Starlink and OneWeb following a recent revision to the Radio Waves Act. As for the launch timeline, the ministry said services could begin as early as June or later this year. Starlink offers high-speed, low-latency internet service worldwide via a constellation of low Earth orbit satellites. Under South Korean law, foreign companies must sign a supply agreement with a domestic telecommunications operator to offer communications network services in the country. Once implemented, LEO satellite communication services will enable high-speed internet access in areas with traditionally poor connectivity as well as on ships and aircraft, where only low-speed satellite connections are currently available, the ministry said. The maritime sector, in particular, is expected to benefit significantly. Crews on long-haul voyages will gain access to over-the-top media services and video calls, marking a major improvement in seafarers' welfare and communication options. To compete with early movers, South Korea announced plans last year to launch two domestically developed LEO satellites using sixth-generation communication technology by 2030. LEO satellites, orbiting between 300 and 1,500 kilometers above Earth, can provide high-speed, low-latency communication due to their proximity to the planet, compared with geostationary satellites. The government plans to invest a total of 320 billion won ($234 million) over six years through 2030 in the development project.
