Freedom Flotilla Coalition says aid vessel approaching Gaza-bound ship left
(Reuters) -A vessel that was approaching Freedom Flotilla Coalition's Gaza-bound charity ship the Madleen has left, the coalition said early on Monday, after an alarm was sounded on the ship warning of a possible interception.
Hours earlier, the Israeli Defence Minister Israeli Katz said he told the military to stop the boat carrying activists including Sweden's Greta Thunberg and a symbolic quantity of aid, including rice and baby formula, to Gaza in defiance of an Israeli blockade.
The coalition posted on its Telegram account a voice memo of Thiago Avila, one of the activists onboard, saying "we have been surrounded by many lights all at once; they were circling our boat but in the end they kept going their own way."
Operated by the pro-Palestinian Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the British-flagged Madleen boat is currently off the Egyptian coast, heading slowly towards the Gaza Strip, which is besieged by Israel.

The ship set sail from Sicily with its 12 activist passengers a week ago, The Associated Press reports. Per CNN's report, FFC posted a photograph on Telegram earlier on Monday local time, which depicted members of the crew wearing lifejackets on the boat while their hands were in the air, the image did not include any Israel Defense Force soldiers. The coalition also posted, 'Alarms are sounding. Drones overhead' before it said the ship was intercepted. Israel has said it would stop the boat before it reached its destination. 'I have instructed the IDF to ensure that the 'Madleen' flotilla does not reach Gaza,' Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a statement on Sunday via CNN. Israel's Foreign Ministry has painted the voyage as a 'media gimmick' and called it a 'celebrities yacht.' Referring to the humanitarian aid ship a 'selfie yacht,' Israel's Foreign Ministry wrote on social platform X that 'The passengers are expected to return to their home countries' and posted video of what appear to be Israeli military members distributing sandwiches and water to the activists. Following nearly three months of fully blocking humanitarian aid to Gaza, Israel recently began allowing some aid to enter. However, United Nations and others including Pope Leo XIV have warned of mass starvation in Gaza if Israel does not fully lift its blockade and end its military campaign. Japan confirms China's aircraft carrier sailed east of Iwo Jima for first time
TOKYO (Reuters) -The Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning sailed through waters east of the island of Iwo Jima in the Pacific Ocean for the first time, Japan's top government spokesperson said on Monday. Japan would strengthen surveillance and gather necessary information, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told a regular press briefing in Tokyo. Japan has also sent "an appropriate message" to China, Hayashi said without elaborating. Iwo Jima is located 1,000 km (620 miles) south of Tokyo. A statement by Japan's Joint Staff showed over the weekend that the Liaoning, accompanied by some other ships, sailed in the sea within Japan's exclusive economic zone near Minamitorishima, a remote island east of Iwo Jima. Japan had also confirmed fighter jets and helicopters taking off and landing from Liaoning in the waters southeast of Iwo Jima on Sunday.
