Daniel Cormier predicts Justin Gaethje gets UFC title shot vs. champ Islam Makhachev
Daniel Cormier sees Justin Gaethje sliding into the UFC title picture.
Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev (27-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC) is gearing up for his next title defense after making quick work of short-notice replacement Renato Moicano at UFC 311 in January.
Ilia Topuria says he was promised an immediate lightweight title shot after he vacated his featherweight title, but there's been pushback from Makhachev's team. That's why Cormier thinks Gaethje (26-5 MMA, 9-5 UFC) will end up getting the title shot.
'I honestly believe that's who is going to fight for the belt, I believe it's going to be Justin Gaethje,' Cormier said on his 'Funky and the Champ' show with Ben Askren. 'If I'm team Makhachev, I'm asking for Justin Gaethje because that's a big-name fight, it's the guy that carries a lot of name recognition. I think that's going to be the fight if I'm being honest with you.'
Ben Askren finds it hard to make a case for Gaethje, who was knocked out by ex-featherweight champ Max Holloway at UFC 300, but rebounded with a decision win over Rafael Fiziev at UFC 313.
'He lost to Holloway, and Topuria just put down Holloway in very impressive fashion,' Askren said of Gaethje. 'I don't even think it's a hard argument. I think Topuria is by far the most compelling person.'
Cormier's argument for Makhachev is that two of his four title defenses came over former UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, and how he doesn't want to go down that road again. Askren explained why he doesn't see Cormier's argument as valid.
'Those two featherweights, Holloway has the very, very recent win against Justin Gaethje at lightweight, at which they competed at lightweight, right?' Askren said. 'And then Volkanovski had the very competitive bout with Islam Makhachev. 'So you have both of those guys also competing at lightweight and having relatively good results.'

Kris Moutinho opens up on dark time after UFC release: I was close to 'ending it all'
Kris Moutinho opens up on dark time after UFC release: I was close to 'ending it all' ATLANTA – Kris Moutinho had very dark thoughts after his original stint in the UFC ended. Moutinho (14-6 MMA, 0-2 UFC) made his UFC debut on short notice against former bantamweight champion Sean O'Malley in July 2021. He lost the fight by third-round TKO at UFC 264 but earned a Fight of the Night bonus for his effort, which made him a fan favorte. But Moutinho would receive his walking papers after getting finished by Guido Cannetti in the first round at UFC Fight Night 203. That's when things took a really bad turn for the 32-year-old. "I went through a really bad time with relationships, with everything else," Moutinho told MMA Junkie and other reporters during Wednesday's UFC on ESPN 69 media day. "My life was just a mess. I was very close to ending this thing, ending it all and being done. "I don't want to talk too much about it, but it was a bad time, one of the worst times in my life. I found the girl I'm with now, my beautiful girlfriend. She saved me, saved my life, helped me find God a lot better, and I'm just in a better place." Moutinho has been given a second chance in the UFC after putting together a five-fight winning streak. However, the opportunity will come on short notice once again, and it'll be against undefeated Malcolm Wellmaker (9-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) on Saturday's UFC on ESPN 69 (ESPN, ESPN+) prelims at State Farm Arena. Despite the far-from-ideal circumstances, Moutinho insists he's at peace. "I feel like I'm where God put me, where I'm supposed to be," Moutinho said. "I feel like this is the guy that should have been here in 2021, the guy that is mentally focused, enjoys this stuff again. Then, I was just kind of going through the motions, and I was happy to be here, but I was kind of just happy to be here. I'm not that guy no more. I don't care. I'm coming to kill. I'm coming to knock him out. He has to kill me to get me out of there."

Kamaru Usman on potential Islam Makhachev fight: 'Another blockbuster before I sail off'
Kamaru Usman on potential Islam Makhachev fight: 'Another blockbuster before I sail off' Kamaru Usman is all for Islam Makhachev's move up to the UFC welterweight division. Makhachev (27-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC) vacated his UFC lightweight title and will get an immediate title shot against newly crowned welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena later in the year. Although former champion Usman (20-4 MMA, 15-3 UFC) is trying to re-enter the title picture when he faces Joaquin Buckley (21-6 MMA, 11-4 UFC) in Saturday's UFC on ESPN 69 headliner (ESPN, ESPN+) at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, he sees Makhachev's inclusion in his division as a positive one. "There's a reason this is the marquee division in the sport, almost in all sports, around this weight class, from lightweight to welterweight," Usman told Kevin Iole. "It's the marquee weight class for excitement. I love it. I love Islam coming up. At one point I probably would have been a little annoyed with it, but I'm older and I'm wiser now. "At the same time, I love Islam, and I really care for him. If this was the decision he wanted to make and chose to make, then I'm all for it. As it pertains to me as a fighter, I love it. I believe he's next to challenge for that title. As a champion going up, you absolutely should get that opportunity, if you're willing to vacate the belt like he did. I love it." Della Maddalena (18-2 MMA, 8-0 UFC) snapped Belal Muhammad's 11-fight unbeaten run to claim the welterweight title at UFC 315. He managed to stop the majority of Muhammad's takedowns and hurt him on the feet, a similar game plan he'll likely have to impose against Makhachev. If both Usman and Makhachev emerge victorious in their next fights, "The Nigerian Nightmare" is excited at the possibility of adding another marquee name to his resume. "I think him and Jack, I think that's a fantastic fight," Usman continued. "I don't count Jack out. Jack is very a formidable opponent. I said that even before his last fight. I said this is a guy, if you sleep on him, he will ruin your day. He went out there and he ruined Belal's year. ...JDM is definitely no easy out for anybody. "So, it's not just a shoo-in, Islam is going to come in and get that belt. I do think Islam has the ability to do it, but it's not going to be easy. Fast forward, I mean current pound-for-pound vs. former pound-for-pound, I think that's a blockbuster. That would be a great outing to go out there and get another blockbuster before I sail off."
