The absence of star player and captain Christian Pulisic has been the main topic of conversation in the days leading up to the tournament.
AC Milan's Pulisic, and a number of other key players from European teams, opted out of the continental tournament in order to rest and recover after the arduous 2024-2025 club season.
Meanwhile, soccer's biggest names like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are playing for their national teams, leading legendary USMNT forward Landon Donovan to admit on Sunday that "some of our guys who are on vacation not wanting to play in Gold Cup, it's pissing me off.'

Pulisic and his girlfriend, American golfer Alexa Melton, gave their clear takes on the controversy just hours before USMNT took on Switzerland on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old, who has 32 goals and 18 assists in 76 appearances for the United States, posted a series of photos with his loved ones enjoying some downtime with a telling caption: "Just what the doctor ordered."
Melton also commented on the post, which featured her in the first photo of the slideshow. Her comment matched Pulisic's matter-of-fact tone, suggesting that a vacation is exactly what Pulisic deserved after the long club season.
"Much needed vitamin D," Melton said in the comments.
Pulisic has not spoken on the record about his decision to skip the Gold Cup, which was initiated by the player and his camp, according to U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker.

However, he and Melton's words on Tuesday were not the first social media activity to catch attention during his absence from the national team. Pulisic liked a public post from his dad, Mark Pulisic, on Monday that called out Donovan for his criticism.

Cam Skattebo's Lack of Pro Football History Knowledge Is Shockingly Bad

Cam Skattebo's Lack of Pro Football History Knowledge Is Shockingly Bad originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Former Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo has gone viral for all the wrong reasons. In a Barstool Sports video that appeared on X, Skattebo was looking at photos of some of the NFL's greatest players on his phone and was asked to identify each by name. Advertisement Shockingly, the New York Giants rookie was 'scatterbrained' as he could not identify two Pro Football Hall of Famers: Calvin Johnson and Brett Favre. Johnson was later identified only after Skattebo received hints. In addition, Skattebo was unable to identify former Saints great Marques Colston, but was able to name Seahawks Legion of Boom safety Kam Chancellor. It is a good thing Skattebo was not looking at photos of ex-Giants running backs that came before him. How embarrassing would it be not to know your team's backfield history and recognize Tiki Barber, Joe Morris or Ottis Anderson? A fourth-round pick out of Arizona State, Skattebo took college football by storm last season, rushing for over 1,700 yards and a whopping 21 TDs. Skattebo's effectiveness inside the red zone is the reason he is fighting for a spot on the Giants roster. Advertisement Let us hope Skattebo learns the Giants playbook better than he knows NFL history. Vikings Make Announcement About Key Player Return After Long Injury Absence

Vikings Make Announcement About Key Player Return After Long Injury Absence originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Minnesota Vikings lost a key piece of their offense in Week 8 of the 2024 NFL season. Left tackle Christian Darrisaw, the team's first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, had only missed a handful of games in his young career up until that point. Advertisement Unfortunately, during the Vikings' 30-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 8, Darrisaw suffered a serious knee injury, tearing his ACL and MCL, which would sideline him for the remainder of the season. However, the Vikings received a huge update concerning their starting offensive tackle as a post to social media showed Darrisaw back at practice and participating in individual drills. At the time of the Virginia Tech alumnus' placement onto injured reserve, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell noted that "he's clearly one of our offensive pillars that we have leaned on a lot, and it's going to be a significant loss. But we've all got to do a little bit more." Advertisement Over his first three seasons in the NFL, Darrisaw played in 41 games, but his injury-shortened 2024 only allowed him to play in seven contests. In that limited timeframe, Darrisaw graded 81.4 on Pro Football Focus, ranking 11th out of 140 tackles. Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O' Hanisch-Imagn Images In July 2024, Darrisaw signed a massive contract extension, linking him to the Vikings through the 2029 season. The deal added four years at $104 million to his existing contract. Based on annual average salary, the 26-year-old is the fourth-highest-paid tackle. Minnesota is in the first day of mandatory minicamp and will extend to June 12. From June 16 to 18, the Vikings will reconvene for voluntary organized team activities. Advertisement Related: J.J. Colin Cowherd Doesn't Hold Back on Aaron Rodgers Signing With Steelers

Colin Cowherd Doesn't Hold Back on Aaron Rodgers Signing With Steelers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After months of waiting, the Pittsburgh Steelers got their quarterback for the 2025 NFL season. Last week, Aaron Rodgers agreed to terms with the Steelers on a one-year contract worth $13.65 million. Since then, the speculation about how Rodgers will fare in the Steel City has been a major talking point by sports pundits. Advertisement On Wednesday, Colin Cowherd delivered his diagnosis of how he believes the Rodgers-Steelers partnership will play out during his show, "The Herd." "I think it's pretty clear it's going to be pretty bumpy. I think I'm doing Aaron a solid by (predicting a) 9-8 (record). My guess it could be 7-10," said Cowherd. Cowherd then began to list off elite quarterbacks from recent years who have switched teams late in their careers and categorized them into two camps: successful and unsuccessful. "Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Matthew Stafford, Philip Rivers went to Indy, Aaron Rodgers with the Jets, Russell Wilson, Kirk Cousins, Matt Ryan and Cam Newton. Let's put them in two camps, one being successful. Brady won a Super Bowl. Stafford won a Super Bowl. Peyton Manning won a Super Bowl. Philip Rivers had a shockingly good year in his last year in the NFL in Indianapolis. Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (8).© Philip G. Pavely-Imagn Images "And then you have the other camp, the less successful camp," Cowherd continued. "The truth is if you have a defensive coach as an old quarterback who's past your prime. It's going to be turbulent. It's not going to be pretty. This is going to be hard." Advertisement Rodgers joined his Steelers teammates on Tuesday on the first day of mandatory minicamp, which runs for three days and concludes on Thursday. The 41-year-old quarterback told the media signing with Pittsburgh was "best for my soul" and pointed to head coach Mike Tomlin as a big reason for joining the Steelers. Rodgers finished last year with the New York Jets by passing for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. The Steelers averaged 192.0 passing yards per game in 2024, ranking 27th, and allowed 49 sacks, tied for the ninth-most.
