Telangana government confers Gaddar Film Award 2024 on ‘Mana Cinema… First Reel' as Best Film Book

Hans India6 days ago

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has selected the book 'Mana Cinema… First Reel', authored by Dr Rentala Jayadeva, for the Best Film Book category under the Gaddar Film Awards – 2024. The award was announced on Thursday by a jury of experts at a press conference held in Hyderabad.
The book, published by EMESCO, examines the early history of South Indian cinema, with a particular focus on Telugu films. Based on over two decades of research, the work includes documentation from archival newspapers, photographs, and film advertisements dating back nearly a century.
According to the jury, Mana Cinema… First Reel was recognised for its in-depth research into lesser-known aspects of early Indian cinema, including developments from the silent film era to the advent of talkies.
One section of the book revisits the 1931 film Kalidas, commonly cited as Tamil cinema's first talkie. Dr Jayadeva presents findings suggesting that a significant portion of the film was in Telugu, and argues that it should be acknowledged accordingly in Telugu cinema history.
The book also covers the production, distribution, and exhibition practices of early Indian films, and discusses the first full-length Telugu talkie Bhakta Prahlada. Dr Jayadeva's earlier research on this film had led to revisions in the officially recognised date of Telugu Cinema Day, now marked on 6 February.
Dr Jayadeva is a senior journalist and film critic with more than three decades of experience. He previously received the Nandi Award in 2011 for Best Film Critic. His current recognition under the Gaddar Film Awards highlights continued interest in historical research on Telugu cinema.
The Gaddar Film Awards, named after the late revolutionary balladeer Gaddar, were introduced by the Telangana government to honour contributions to cinema across various categories.

At long last: on the IPL, Royal Challengers Bengaluru's win

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) played the Indian Premier League's (IPL) inaugural game on April 18, 2008. It was a night that, however, belonged to rival Kolkata Knight Riders with Brendon McCullum's unbeaten 158 putting the match well beyond the host in its backyard at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. In the subsequent editions, the franchise with a fiercely loyal fan base, promised much, delivered little and had three runner-up finishes to show. Finally, the ghosts of the past were laid to rest when Rajat Patidar's men claimed the title with a six-run victory over Punjab Kings in the summit clash at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium on Tuesday night. RCB's triumph in the IPL's 18th edition was also a tribute to Virat Kohli's longevity. He has been with the squad since its first game in 2008. In a unit that featured stars such as Rahul Dravid, AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle and Ross Taylor in the past, Kohli has been the forever spine. The young lad has grown into a patriarch, and he has achieved enough and more with the Indian team, both as player and captain, but a missing IPL trophy, always rankled him. Finally that aberration has been corrected and there was no mistaking the relief and joy that coursed through him on a surreal June night. Patidar's assurance, Kohli's experience, spinner Krunal Pandya's choking spells, and Josh Hazlewood's sharp pace, all combined well while many others dished out cameos to keep RCB in the hunt through the latest IPL. Even if the cup proved elusive, Punjab Kings did remarkably well, especially its captain Shreyas Iyer; he will have a larger role with the Indian ODI team whenever Rohit Sharma and Kohli bid adieu to that format. Among the rest, Mumbai Indians, after a lukewarm start, surged back and found a berth in the play-offs, one that also featured Gujarat Titans. If the IPL was all about RCB's redemption song and Punjab Kings' chutzpah, equally, it mirrored the decline of a pedigreed outfit, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), which finished last. An ageing M.S. Dhoni could not stem the rot and former champion CSK will have to rebuild afresh in the coming editions. Having commenced on March 22, the IPL stretched interminably and a break caused by the Pahalgam terror attack and the resultant Operation Sindoor, forced a change in schedule. The IPL also highlighted talented players such as young Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Sai Sudharsan. As a sporting brand, the league is formidable but, as Kohli said, Tests are five levels above in quality and, hopefully, modern players will respect this reality.

Thug Life advance booking: Kamal Haasan's film to open with ₹12.46 cr, 2 lakh+ tickets sold despite Karnataka blockage

Thug Life advance booking: Kamal Haasan's film Thug Life is ready to debut on Thursday despite no show across Karnataka. The actor recently found himself at the centre of a controversy, which led to the film being blocked from release in the state. However, the film is set to see a decent opening day. However, missing out on the Karnataka circuit is undoubtedly going to cost Kamal Haasan who is also jointly backing the film. According to film industry tracker Sacnilk, Thug Life has collected a gross of ₹ 5.02 crore from ticket sales in all languages. The film will be out in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu languages. It will also be available in IMAX 2D format. Considering all formats, Kamal Haasan's film has so far sold 2,95,456 tickets for 10,678 shows across India, excluding Karnataka. Considering blocked seats, Thug Life is set to see a massive opening with ₹ 12.46 crore gross earnings. The film is set to clash with Sajid Nadiawala's Housefull 5 which has now generated way less money from advance booking. The movie is likely to premiere with ₹ 5.67 crore gross earnings. While Karnataka is out of the picture for Thug Life, states like Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, followed by Gujarat, top the list with maximum revenue from the advance booking for the first day in all versions. Thug Life is a gangster action drama film, directed by Mani Ratnam. It is co-written by Kamal Haasan, who is also jointly producing the film under his banner Raaj Kamal Films International. Madras Talkies and Red Giant Movies are also backing the film. Besides Kamal Haasan, it also features Silambarasan, Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal, Rohit Saraf and Baburaj. The film marks the reunion of Haasan and Ratnam after they collaborated on their 1987 film, Nayakan. The film landed in controversy after Haasan said, "Kannada was born out of Tamil' during the film event. Predicting the fate of the film amid the row, film trade insider Ramesh Bala posted on X, formerly Twitter, 'The anticipation is huge for the biggest film of the year #ThugLife. The promotional material impressed everyone. We can expect, solid action and Phenomenal performances from leads #KamalHaasan, #SilambarasanTR, #Trisha, #JojuGeorge & others. With themes rumored to explore action, identity, and rebellion, #ThugLife is expected to be more than just a commercial entertainer. Excited for tomorrow.'
