Michigan couple released after nearly a month in Mexican prison over payment dispute with timeshare company

A Michigan couple was released Thursday after spending nearly a month in a Mexican prison over a payment dispute with a timeshare company, according to Michael Gordon, a spokesperson for Michigan Rep. Tom Barrett's office.
Paul Akeo, a 58-year-old Navy veteran, and his wife Christy, 60, were taken into custody shortly after their plane landed in Cancun on March 4, according to their family.
Prosecutors in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, where Cancun is located, accused the Akeos of defrauding a hospitality company.
The case stems from a 2021 timeshare agreement between the Akeos and Palace Elite, a subsidiary of The Palace Company, John Manly, an attorney for the Akeo family, previously told CNN.
The couple's family has said the allegations against them are false. Through their attorneys, the Akeos say they successfully disputed charges with their credit card from a resort company they claim breached their contract by failing to provide services.
The couple is traveling back to the US and are expected to land in Michigan shortly before midnight, Gordon said.
Manly also confirmed that the couple has been released and were heading home Thursday. He thanked Congressman Barrett, calling him a 'hero in my book,' as well as Adam Boehler and President Donald Trump.
'President Trump, I know he personally got involved with this and wanted them home, so I give him a lot of credit,' Manly said to CNN Thursday night. 'No American should have to endure what these people have endured. But for these three men, I think they'd still be sitting there.'
A spokesperson for The Palace Company did not immediately respond to questions about the status of the case Thursday following the Akeos' release.
Manly told CNN in a March statement that the couple was being 'held captive in a hell hole of a Mexican maximum-security prison.'
Barrett decried the prison's 'horrific conditions' on X after he visited the couple there on Wednesday.
Lindsey Hull previously told CNN she was concerned about her parents' health in prison.
'Their lives are in danger. Their health is declining. We need to get these people home,' Hull said, referring to her parents. 'We just don't have another option. They're not going to be sitting in prison indefinitely.'
The US State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the couple's release. A State Department spokesperson previously told CNN it's 'aware of reports of the detention of two U.S. citizens in Mexico' but declined to offer specifics.
Lindsey Hull said last month her parents were taken into custody and told arrest warrants had been issued for them in Mexico after a criminal complaint was filed by The Palace Company alleging fraud.
'We're assuming it has something to do with the timeshare with Palace Resorts,' she recalled her stepfather telling her in a call the day her parents were arrested.
Prosecutors in Mexico allege in a March 15 statement that in 2022, the Akeos canceled 13 credit card payments to a hotel chain totaling more than $116,500. Prosecutors did not elaborate on possible evidence but said the activity constitutes fraud.
Through their attorneys, the Akeos say Palace failed to provide promised services a few months into their timeshare contract. The couple then filed a complaint with their credit card company seeking a refund of nearly $117,000 in Palace payments.
The couple argued the resort company breached their contract. Manly said in a statement last week the Akeos were held 'because they successfully disputed Palace' [sic] charges and failure to deliver services with American Express, criticized the Company on Facebook and alerted others who felt wronged by Palace.'
Manly added the company was retaliating against the couple for challenging the charges.
A spokesperson for The Palace Company and attorneys for the Akeos both provided CNN with documentation showing an extended dispute about the couple's use of membership benefits and what could be considered breaches of contract.
The Palace spokesperson told CNN in statements last week that they filed a complaint with Mexican authorities in August 2023 after the Akeos 'fraudulently disputed legitimate credit card charges and publicly encouraged others to do the same.'
'The Akeos began disputing their membership charges with their credit card companies,' Palace said in a statement last week. 'These disputes – despite relating to services they had actively used – were granted,' the company said in a statement.
Palace claims the couple later took to Facebook and 'bragged about these chargebacks and encouraged others to follow suit.'
Last September, attorneys for Palace sent a cease-and-desist letter to Christy Akeo claiming that her Facebook posts were unlawful because she had instructed members on how to end their agreements 'using illegal and fraudulent means,' according to a copy of the letter the company provided to CNN.
Separately, in announcing the fraud charges last month, Mexican prosecutors pointed to social media posts, alleging Christy Akeo used them 'to inform how said fraud was committed against the hotel chain.'
Palace said it has also filed a related civil suit seeking financial damages and that 'all of its actions are in full accordance with Mexican law.'
'The bottom line is this is a civil dispute which can be easily litigated,' Manly told CNN in a Friday statement. 'Palace has no right to force a settlement by having the Akeos arrested and thrown into a dangerous Mexican prison.'
Hull previously told CNN her family received no notice of criminal charges that she is aware of and said her mother did take to social media to share her negative experience with fellow Palace patrons. However, she's baffled at why social media activity may have contributed to the arrest.
'My mom was very clear about that in this Facebook group where people were seeking information on what to do when you get in these memberships,' Hull said. 'If there's 8,000 people dealing with the same thing, and the same disappointments with Palace Resorts, and how they treat their members, maybe you should look in the mirror and make a change.'

Nearly 200 House members signed onto a bipartisan letter this week to express support for Job Corps after the Department of Labor recently announced it would soon be pausing operations at centers nationwide. In the letter to Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer, the lawmakers express support 'for the continuation of the Job Corps program,' while noting it remains funded through government funding legislation that passed earlier this year. 'Nearly 20,000 young people utilize Job Corps to learn skills for in-demand vocational and technical job training,' the letter said. 'Job Corps is one of the few national programs that specifically targets the 16-24-year-old population that is neither working, nor in school, and provides them with a direct pathway into employment openings in industries such as manufacturing and shipbuilding.' Job Corps, established as part of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, is a free residential education and job training program for low-income people between 16 and 24 years of age. In an announcement explaining the Labor Department's decision to suspend operations at Job Corps centers, Chavez-DeRemer said the program was found to no longer achieve 'the intended outcomes that students deserve,' citing what she described as 'a startling number of serious incident reports and our in-depth fiscal analysis.' 'We remain committed to ensuring all participants are supported through this transition and connected with the resources they need to succeed as we evaluate the program's possibilities.' The department said it will begin a 'phased pause' initiating 'an orderly transition for students, staff, and local communities.' The pause will occur by June 30, the office said. The move was met with swift backlash from lawmakers, including Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Susan Collins (R-Maine), who defended the program in a statement expressing strong opposition to the department's move to pause operations. 'Serving nearly 500 students in Maine, the Loring Job Corps Center and the Penobscot Job Corps Center have become important pillars of support for some of our most disadvantaged young adults,' Collins said at the time. In the new letter sent to the secretary Thursday, the group of lawmakers said by 'filling job openings, Job Corps ensures that young people become productive members of the American workforce.' 'No other program takes homeless youth and turns them into the welders, electricians, shipbuilders, carpenters, nurses, mechanics, and vocational workers of the future,' the letter said. The letter came a day after a federal judge temporarily blocked the administration from suspending operations at Job Corps centers as critics argue the move is illegal. 'The Department of Labor is working closely with the Department of Justice to evaluate and comply with the temporary restraining order,' the agency said in a statement to The Hill on Friday. Jun. 6—ESKO — Tribal courts on reservations nationwide often rely on practices derived from the American legal system. For Esko's Megan Treuer, chief judge for the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa, these practices can overlook the nuances of tribal culture and, consequently, fail to deliver effective justice. The Bush Foundation announced Tuesday, June 6, that Treuer is the recipient of a $150,000 two-year fellowship. The funds will allow her to further incorporate traditional Ojibwe practice into her tribal court by immersing herself in the Ojibwe language and culture, and travel across the world to mentor under global Indigenous leaders. "We don't have a separation of our way of life, our ceremonial practices, or language and justice," she said. The Bush Foundation aims to identify and support leaders in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota by providing monetary assistance to grow their capacity and knowledge to be even more effective community leaders, according to Adora Land, grant-making director with the Bush Fellowship. "Megan was someone who we identified for the work that she's doing," Land said. "(It) would be really impactful (for Treuer to) have a fellowship in this moment." A member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, Treuer has worked in tribal justice for about 20 years and served as a judge for the past 12. Through her fellowship, Treuer will focus on how to "fully indigenize" the tribal justice system by reexamining how justice is delivered in Indian country and revitalizing cultural justice practices that reflect how the communities have traditionally taken care of each other. Bois Forte is one of two tribal nations in Minnesota with criminal jurisdiction, the other being the Red Lake Nation. Most of Treuer's casework is criminal and child protection. Treuer believes that implementing Indigenous practices that reconnect legal jurisdiction to culture will result in lower recidivism rates and better outcomes. For example, she said that if a young offender partakes in a ceremony instead of being sent to jail, it could yield better long-term outcomes. But to do that, Treuer believes she first needs to reacquaint herself with and immerse herself in her own culture and language. Treuer's top priority with her fellowship is reacquainting herself with the Ojibwe language, which she admits she knew better as a teenager. She plans to take Ojibwe language courses and immerse herself where the language is frequently spoken, such as tribal ceremonies. "It's hard to authentically deliver Anishinaabe justice when you don't have good command of the language," she said. Additionally, Treuer plans to travel to seek mentorship from leaders of Indigenous justice globally. She plans to go to New Zealand, which is governed by the Treaty of Waitangi, the country's founding document between the British Crown and the island's native Maori population, which grants significant rights and recognition to its Indigenous population. Treuer cited one of her mentors, Paul Day, the recently retired chief judge of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, as a source of inspiration for the future of Indigenous law. She said he would often perform ceremonies in the Ojibwe language during court proceedings, such as a family being reunited or a child being adopted. Treuer believes it is her responsibility to follow Day's legacy. "Now that he's retired, and a number of other trailblazers are retiring or moving on, I feel it's incumbent on myself to learn what my predecessors used to do," she said.

Opinion - How long can America's colleges and universities survive Trump's ‘chaos tax'?

The House proposed tax on college endowments has drawn considerable attention. Critics have rightly noted that it would effectively tax student scholarships as well as undermine donor intent, and lacks a clear public policy rationale. While this tax targets only the wealthiest institutions, every college and university in the country is paying a different kind of price — what I call a 'chaos tax.' This refers to the unfunded time, energy and expense required to respond to the administration's attacks on higher education, along with its onslaught of confusing policy proposals and demands. That the federal government would so recklessly jeopardize the future of American colleges and universities is mind-boggling. When my organization surveyed and interviewed hundreds of college presidents two years ago, they reported that the issues that mattered the most to them were tied to improving the education offered to students. Among their top priorities: fostering a climate for free expression, strengthening the college-to-career pipeline, and integrating new technologies. This year, college presidents tell us that the bulk of their time is taken up with responding to executive orders, protecting the rights of students, and responding to negative perceptions of higher ed. In both the near past and the present, many were also focused on the financial stability of their institutions. But the current policy climate has made this an even more pressing worry. College presidents now express concern that their institutions face an existential threat. Each time the federal government issues a threat or demand, institutions must pause to parse and interpret it. Each time funding is withheld or a grant is cancelled, institutions have to realign their already stressed budgets and make difficult decisions. Many executive orders have been paused by judges due to their lack of clarity or their lack of alignment with federal law or the Constitution. But whether they stand or fall, the toll on campus leaders — and the students they serve — is intense. If our largest universities are struggling to respond, imagine what this season of attack is doing to the many smaller and leaner institutions. To give just one example, the recent threat to disenroll Harvard's international students — a threat currently on hold thanks to a judicial ruling — has sent shock waves throughout all of higher education. Nationally, more than a million college and university students are from countries outside the U.S. For decades, American colleges and universities have welcomed them, seeing opportunities for enhanced peer-to-peer global learning, a way to keep tuition down for domestic students, and a chance to share the good news about American democracy and freedom to learn. In the wake of unprecedented arrests, sudden cancelling of visas and now the threat of disenrollment, international student applications have dropped dramatically across the board. Current international students are panicked about their future and unsure if they will be able to return after the summer. For many years, American higher education has been the envy of the world and one of our most successful exports. The international students who flock here pay top dollar to receive a world-class education, globally lauded credentials, and a deeper appreciation for the American way of life. In this case, the balance of trade is widely in our favor. The loss of international students means a less effective and robust education for all American students. Without revenue from international students, American students will have to pay more. And international enrollment is but a single target of chaotic orders and policy. With more of their college leadership investing time in navigating the many unforced errors of the current administration, American students will see less time spent on meeting their educational needs and fewer opportunities to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and other important fields. That the federal government would recklessly endanger the future of so many American colleges and universities is vexing. What are our goals as a nation? Are we looking to create well-paying jobs and enhance American prosperity? Preserve the blessings of a free society? Improve health and life expectancy for more Americans? No country has been able to achieve these aims without significant investment. It is not just the elites that are bearing the burden of this chaos. The local religious college, the small comprehensive university that educates nurses and teachers, community colleges, the land grant public institution, the state branch campus — all of them are vulnerable to the same threatened withdrawal of federal support. Collectively, American higher education is being weakened and hollowed out. Our capacity for scientific innovation is being hobbled. Our pathways out of poverty are being pruned. Our future is being mortgaged. We need to insist on a sensible policy agenda for higher education — one that is preparing the country for the impact of AI and positioning our graduates to serve their communities and lead in their professions. Students, alumni and families who hope for a bright future for their children must join higher ed leaders and insist on an end to the chaos tax.
