INTUC worker brutally attacked at Thiruvananthapuram's Vellarada
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A headload worker affiliated with the Congress-affliliated INTUC sustained severe injuries in his private parts after he was attacked using a metal hook allegedly by trade union members belonging to the leftist parties at Vellarada on Sunday.
Varghese, 56, of Perekonam in Vellarada police station limits was attacked by two people, who are affiliated with the CITU and AITUC unions, the police said.
The accused, who are still on the run, used a hook that was used to lift sacks in the market to attack Varghese. They attacked Varghese in his groin area. The police said the victim's scrotum got ruptured in the attack and the testicles came out. Varghese was soon rushed to hospital. However, his condition worsened and later the doctors surgically removed one of the testicles as infection spread to that area while undergoing treatment.
The police said the incident occurred at Perekonam, but claimed the incident was not politically motivated.
'The injured and the attackers belonged to INTUC till sometime back. Later they left the outfit and joined other unions. The attack is however not political. The three were drunk and it was in the melee that the man was injured,' said a police officer. The police said the victim initially was unaware how he was attacked. 'He did not know which weapon was used on him. He was attacked from behind and we concluded that he was attacked using a hook being used by union workers to move the sacks,' the cop added.

NIA to probe ex-Bajrang Dal leader's murder in Karnataka
The Centre has handed over the probe into the murder of former Bajrang Dal member Suhas Shetty in Karnataka last month to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), officials aware of the matter said on Sunday. The ministry of home affairs (MHA), in its notification dated June 7, ordered the central agency to investigate the case, citing implications on national security and the need to uncover a larger conspiracy. 'The Central Government is of the opinion that a Scheduled Offence under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, has been committed... and it is required to be investigated by the National Investigation Agency in accordance with the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008,' the notification said. According to police, Suhas was travelling with five of his associates near Kinnikambla in Bajpe area of Mangaluru on the night of May 1 when their vehicle was intercepted by five-six assailants, who then dragged the 30-year-old out of the vehicle and hacked him to death. The incident triggered communal tensions in the region, prompting authorities to impose prohibitory orders under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). So far, twelve people have been arrested in connection with Shetty's murder. The Centre's decision comes a month after the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Karnataka demanded an NIA inquiry into the incident, with the party accusing the Congress-led state government of 'going soft' on the issue. 'Why is the Congress government unwilling to hand over the case to the NIA? What are they afraid of?' BJP lawmaker Captain Brijesh Chowta said on May 5, after the Congress dismissed the murder as a case of personal rivalry. When asked about NIA taking over the probe, chief minister Siddaramaiah, on Sunday, said, 'I have asked DG and IGP MA Saleem to seek legal advice from the advocate general.' In its notification, the MHA said that the murder appeared to be a targeted killing carried out in public to create fear, allegedly by members of the now-banned Popular Front of India (PFI). 'In this case, sections 10 r/w 41, 13, 15, 17, 18 & 20 of UA(P) Act, 1967 are attracted, as it is related to targeted killing of an individual in public view with the intention to create terror in the minds of people and the accused persons involved in the case are allegedly members of Popular Front of India (PFI), an unlawful association,' the order read.

NIA to take up ‘Hindu worker' Suhas Shetty murder case
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Saturday announced that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) will take over the probe into the murder of Suhas Shetty, a Karnataka Bajrang Dal leader and the prime accused in the 2022 murder of 23-year-old Mohammed Fazil. Shetty was killed in Mangaluru on May 1 by a group of men. The decision to hand over the case to the NIA follows repeated demands from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had earlier petitioned Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot regarding the matter. The BJP had accused the Congress-led Karnataka government of being soft on the perpetrators. Suhas Shetty's mother, Sulochana Shetty, had also called for the case to be transferred to the NIA. She had alleged deliberate mishandling of the probe at the state level. Suhas Shetty was killed near Kinnipadavu Cross within the Bajpe police station limits while travelling with five associates. Their vehicle was intercepted by attackers reportedly using a Swift car and a pickup truck. The assailants used lethal weapons to assault Suhas Shetty, inflicting fatal injuries. The Mangaluru city police have so far arrested 12 persons in connection with the murder. Suhas Shetty had previously been named the main accused in the murder of Mohammed Fazil, an MBA graduate who was killed by masked men in Surathkal on July 28, 2022. Fazil's murder was allegedly carried out as retaliation for the killing of BJP Yuva Morcha worker Praveen Nettaru. According to the police at the time, Suhas Shetty and five others had planned the attack, aiming to 'kill someone' to avenge Nettaru's death. Suhas Shetty had five criminal cases registered against him – four in Mangaluru city and one in the Dakshina Kannada district. He was accused of murder, robbery, and criminal intimidation, among others. On Sunday, Leader of Opposition R Ashoka welcomed the move of the MHA and thanked Union Home Minister Amit Shah. 'We thank Amit Shah for handing over the Mangaluru Hindu worker and brother Suhas Shetty murder case to NIA,' he said. 'There is a big religious fanatic force in the coastal region engaging in murder, communal riots. We had demanded that the Governor hand over the case to the NIA. This is a good development and a win for the BJP,' Ashoka added.

Stadium stampede: Ktk Opposition Leader demands Special Assembly Session, Rs 1 Cr Compensation
Bengaluru, June 8 (UNI) Karnataka Opposition Leader R Ashok on Sunday demanded a special session of the Assembly to deliberate on the Chinnaswamy stadium stampede. Addressing a press conference here, Ashok said the House should also discuss the Congress-led government's failures that cost 11 lives ahead of IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations on Wednesday. 'Three separate inquiries have been ordered – which one is genuine? We demand a judicial probe headed by a sitting High Court judge,' he insisted. Ashok also called for enhanced compensation for the victims' families. 'If the government is truly not at fault, it should give Rs 1 crore per family. As opposition leaders, we will contribute our one month's salary to the families,' he announced. Dismissing the justification for such a grand event, Ashok added, 'Winning a trophy is not new. Other states have won before. But no other CM has ever used such events for cheap publicity.' He accused the state government of flouting police instructions and thereby breaking the law, which led to the stampede. Ashok alleged that the tragedy could have been averted had Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar not been engrossed in a power tussle. 'Instead of mourning the loss of innocent students, they were chasing a trophy. The police had informed the government of a casualty by noon, and yet the programme went on even after eight children had died. This shows how stone-hearted the government is,' he charged. Ashok cited a letter dated June 4, from the Vidhana Soudha police to the Chief Secretary, warning that the programme was being hastily organised, with inadequate staff and serious security concerns. The letter had recommended cancelling the event, yet the government proceeded, he alleged. He further stated that police had clearly instructed against the participation of department staff and their families, but the directive was ignored. 'CCTV deployment was skipped, drones were flown despite prohibition, and the stage – which was to accommodate only 20–30 people – ended up hosting over 200, including 11 players,' he said. Ashok pointed out that while the event was officially listed as a government function, CM Siddaramaiah later disowned it, claiming it was not a government-organised event.
