Heading to JIA? Parking options limited after fire sweeps through airport parking garage
As flight operations at Jacksonville International Airport returned to some semblance of normal May 17, travelers were told that "all on-airport parking is currently full" in the aftermath of the previous day's fast-moving parking garage fire.
JAX told travelers via X, formerly Twitter, that they "should find alternate means of transportation to the terminal, park at off-airport lots, or get dropped off at the terminal."
The Jacksonville Aviation Authority (JAA) said the Hourly Garage is "closed indefinitely to vehicles and pedestrians due to structural damage." Vehicles won't be allowed to enter or exit the facility until further notice, according to a JAA news release.
The airport's Daily Garage and Daily Surface Lot are closed to incoming vehicles. However, passengers with vehicles already in the Daily Garage and Daily Surface Lot can exit those two facilities, JAA said.

In addition, travelers with flights over the next few days, weeks and months were encouraged to seek alternatives to on-site airport parking. Those alternatives included parking facilities along Airport Road, alternate means of transportation to the airport such as Uber, Lyft or taxi; or getting picked up or dropped off at the terminal, according to the news release.
JAA also said travelers parked in the Hourly Garage can go to the JIA website and sign up to get periodic updates, when available, about the status of airport parking facilities.
To sign up, travelers will be asked to provide contact information as well as the license plate number of their vehicle, JAA said.
Meanwhile, flight operations were getting back to a normal schedule. As of 10:35 a.m. May 17, a half-dozen departures were listed as canceled. No arrivals were canceled, according to the JIA website.

Cunard's Queen Elizabeth arrives in Seattle for summer of Alaska cruises
Cunard's Queen Elizabeth arrived in Seattle on June 12, where the ship will homeport for Alaska sailings for the first time. After its summer Alaska season, Queen Elizabeth will do another first -- a full season of Caribbean sailings from Miami, beginning in October. The roundtrip Seattle itineraries are between seven and 11 nights. Roundtrip cruises are convenient for U.S. guests, said Liz Fettes, Cunard's senior vice president of commercial North America. "We have such a good amount of guests that come from California and from the West Coast, so I think the whole travel with ease, travel from your backyard for Cunard, it really goes in alignment with that," Fettes said. Port of Seattle director Steve Metruck called it an honor to have Queen Elizabeth homeporting in the city for the first time. "This partnership marks a major milestone in our work to expand economic activity and to support local jobs through cruise, and we look forward to advancing together our shared vision for sustainability and responsible tourism," he said in a press release. The Alaska sailings will include lectures through Cunard's partnership with the Royal Canadian Geographical Society as well as 11 speakers from Alaska, including historians, photographers and a dance group. The ship's maiden season in the Caribbean that will follow marks the first time Cunard is dedicating a ship to the region for a full season. "We know how vital it is to not only have Caribbean voyages, but be in the cruise capital of the world," Fettes said. "Miami is the heart of cruising." Cunard completed a makeover of Queen Elizabeth on March 14, which included revitalizations of dining venues and the introduction the Harper's Bazaar Wellness at Sea Program. The program offers various physical treatments, workshops and nutritional programming. "It's got a full list of healthy cuisine options, including plant-based menus," Fettes said. "And they're forward-thinking plant-based menus, versus it being a secondary option of having a vegan or veggie component."

This Airline Abruptly Shut Down Leaving Caribbean-bound Travelers Completely Stranded—What to Know
Travelers visiting the Caribbean should carefully review their upcoming travel plans. Regional airline Silver Airways, which operated local flights through the region, has abruptly shut down all operations. 'We regret to inform you that we are ceasing operations as of today, June 11, 2025,' the airline shared in an Instagram post directed to customers. For passengers who have a scheduled Silver Airways flight, the airline says they should not go to the airport, and credit card refunds will be processed directly to travel agencies and individual credit card holders. Silver Airways announced on Dec. 30, 2024 that it had "voluntarily filed for Chapter 11" bankruptcy protection, and said that all tickets would remain valid. During that process, the airline says it tried finding a buyer, but ultimately had to close. 'Silver entered into a transaction to sell its assets to another airline holding company, who unfortunately has determined to not continue Silver's flight operations in Florida, the Bahamas and the Caribbean,' the airline added in its post to customers. Travelers shared frustration, sharing they were unaware that Silver Airways was facing financial difficulties, and booked a ticket for an upcoming trip, even checking in for the flight successfully the evening before the shutdown. 'No email. No text,' the traveler shared in the social media thread on Reddit. 'I was very much one of those people who showed up at the airport and waited by the gate and realized that no one was there. Insane.' Other travelers shared previous frustration with the airline, saying they were stranded in the Bahamas. "Sad day," one traveler shared in a comment on the social media thread about the closure. "I feel bad for all the employees." The airline operated an extensive route network connecting Florida, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and other Caribbean islands. Frequent visitors to the area may be familiar with Seaborne Airlines, which Silver Airways acquired in 2018. For travelers facing a rebooking situation, many airlines service the route network that Silver maintained. For example, for travelers visiting St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands (STT), American Airlines, Cape Air, JetBlue, Spirit, and United Airlines provide flights to the island.
