Insider details 4 reasons why New York Knicks are in love with idea of Jason Kidd as new head coach

Yahoo18 hours ago

A top NBA insider recently explained why the New York Knicks are so high on the idea of making Jason Kidd their next head coach. Including having the support of top star Jalen Brunson.
It has only been a week since the Knicks fired respected head coach Tom Thibodeau. However, when it comes to such a major franchise, the speculation about his potential replacement has been a notable topic around the league. And Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd appears to be the team's top choice. But why? Especially with championship-winning coaches like Mike Budenholzer and Michael Malone available.

Well, veteran NBA insider Marc Stein tried to shed new light on why the Knicks are so enamored with the one-time New Jersey Nets superstar. Firstly, owner James Dolan is familiar and comfortable with the Hall of Famer. After he played a key role on their 54-win team in 2012-13. But also Kidd interviewed for the Knicks' head coaching job in 2020 before they settled on Thibodeau.
The second reason Stein explained is an important one in today's game, where elite stars are given a surprising amount of influence on coaching hires. 'Knicks star guard Jalen Brunson is widely presumed to be a strong Kidd advocate after they worked so well together for a season in Dallas,' he wrote.

Kidd's first year as head coach in Dallas (2021-22) was when Brunson had the breakout season that helped get the Mavericks to the West Finals and landed him a huge free agent deal from New York that summer.

Another key reason why the Knicks are interested in the 10-time All-Star is that he is one of the few former players who has put together a notable run as a head coach. The NBA insider claims that specific quality has a serious appeal to New York's front office.
Lastly, having played seven seasons during his career in the tri-state area and being used to the New York media also makes Jason Kidd such a strong head coach candidate for the organization.
'Kidd also has considerable familiarity in dealing with the glaring Gotham spotlight as well as the New York media from his time as both a Knick and a Nets player and coach,' Stein wrote. 'That's a hugely important aspect of the job. Given that Thibodeau was so often thrust into the role of team spokesman for a franchise whose executives are extremely media-avoidant.'

Lynx's Napheesa Collier makes bonkers WNBA history in just 1 quarter vs. Storm

The post Lynx's Napheesa Collier makes bonkers WNBA history in just 1 quarter vs. Storm appeared first on ClutchPoints. Minnesota Lynx All-Star Napheesa Collier made bonkers WNBA history, becoming the only player ever to record five steals and two blocks in a single quarter. She pulled off the feat in the opening quarter of Minnesota's 82-77 win over the Seattle Storm at Target Center on Tuesday night. Advertisement The 2024 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year showed exactly why she earned that title. In 37 minutes, Collier collected 10 rebounds, five assists, and 16 points on 7-of-18 shooting. Her suffocating defense powered the Lynx to a 26-11 first-quarter lead. Although the Storm roared back and closed the third quarter at 54-51, the Lynx held firm to seal the win. With the victory, Minnesota improved to a perfect 5-0. Seattle, meanwhile, dropped to 3-2. Collier, a two-time All-WNBA First Team honoree, has been on fire since the start of the season. She's averaging 28.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.2 steals, and 1 block per game. Her all-around play has been key to the Lynx's unbeaten run. Under head coach Cheryl Reeve, the Lynx hold a joint-record four WNBA championships. They share that mark with the Houston Comets and Seattle Storm. Remarkably, all four titles came in the past decade. Last year, the Lynx added the Commissioner's Cup, with Collier named tournament MVP. However, they fell short in the WNBA Finals, losing to the New York Liberty in a winner-take-all Game 5. That win gave New York its first championship since joining the league in 1997. Advertisement Since joining Minnesota in 2019, Collier has built an impressive resume. She boasts four All-Star nods, an All-WNBA Second Team selection, three All-Defensive Team honors, and a Rookie of the Year award. As one of the league's best two-way players, Collier anchors Minnesota's championship push. Last season, she finished second in MVP voting, just behind A'ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces. Early in the season, Collier emerged as a favorite to win the award. The big questions now: Can Collier and the Lynx sustain their hot start and return to the Finals? And will Collier finally win her first MVP award? Up next, the Lynx head to PHX Arena to face the Phoenix Mercury.

WNBA icon Rebecca Lobo makes clear choice for league MVP

The post WNBA icon Rebecca Lobo makes clear choice for league MVP appeared first on ClutchPoints. It's still early in the 2025 WNBA season, but Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier is having the best campaign of her career so far — no small feat for someone on a Hall of Fame trajectory. Advertisement Barring anything unforeseen, the four-time All-Star figures to be a major player in the WNBA MVP conversation when the summer winds down. As it stands, one of her fellow UConn legends, Rebecca Lobo, has her as the clubhouse leader. 'It's early, but right now @PHEEsespieces is leading the @WNBA MVP conversation,' Lobo wrote via X last week. 'Why? See graphic below. (For context: no player has ever led the league in scoring with a 50-40-90 efficiency 7 games into the season.) Research: @jlacroix14 Graphic: @juliana_sherry' Lobo knows what she's talking about. After leading UConn to its first-ever national championship, she played seven seasons in the W. She's since become one of the lead faces of ESPN's women's college basketball and WNBA coverage. Advertisement As for Collier, she's done nothing but make history and reach milestones since the 2025 season started. She notched her 50th career double-double against the Phoenix Mercury last week, and the week before, became the only player ever to record five steals and two blocks in a single quarter. Lynx' Cheryl Reeve calls Napheesa Collier 'best player' in WNBA Paul Rutherford-Imagn Images As the longest-tenured head coach in the WNBA, Cheryl Reeve has guided Collier through her entire career so far. Now that Collier is averaging career-bests almost across the board, Reeve said she's glad people are starting to recognize her star's ability. 'I'm just glad that people are understanding Phee's greatness,' she told the media on Monday. 'How great she is at both ends of the floor. I mean, we're not talking about just putting the ball in the hole. Just a complete player. Best player in the league.' Advertisement While there's still plenty of time for someone to surpass Collier this season, it's hard to argue against Reeve. Collier is the reigning Western Conference Player of the Month and her team is one of two undefeateds left in the WNBA. Reeve also mentioned Collier as an MVP candidate in May, but the vet has remained focused on the task at hand. 'I'm really just focused on team stuff,' Collier said via Sportskeedia. 'We got so close to the championship last year. That's my No. 1 goal. I think all of the other stuff comes after that. I'm just focused on us getting a championship.' Sky's Ariel Atkins defends Angel Reese against ‘irrelevant' non-basketball critiques

The post Sky's Ariel Atkins defends Angel Reese against 'irrelevant' non-basketball critiques appeared first on ClutchPoints. Angel Reese has had a rough start to the 2025 WNBA season alongside her teammates, with the team dropping to 2-6 after another brutal 85-66 loss to the defending champion New York Liberty. However, the Chicago Sky star has also dealt with hardships off the court, as she's gotten more personal scrutiny from both traditional and social media. Advertisement Despite having a standout game and becoming the fastest WNBA player to reach 30 career double-doubles, Reese was hit with a non-basketball question in the Sky's post-game press conference. New teammate Ariel Atkins interrupted to set the record straight on how she noticed Reese being treated. 'The amount of crap that she gets on a day-to-day, and she still shows up,' Atkins started. 'So whatever questions y'all got about our team, basketball-wise, we appreciate it, but all the other nonsense, it's irrelevant. We're here to play basketball and do what we do. 'We're having a hard time right now, at the end of the day. This is a 23-year-old kid who handles herself with grace. Her crown is heavy,' Atkins said definitively. 'So whatever else y'all want to come at her for, the way that she acts, she has to build a wall. She has to have a wall. Because if she doesn't, people will break her down. Not only just because of the way she looks, because of the way she carries herself.' The 28-year-old continued to address the common criticisms that have been increasingly surrounding Reese since the season began. Advertisement 'She doesn't just walk around and act like, 'I'm this, I'm that.' Nah, she knows who she is! And we ain't gonna break her down for that. So, whatever other question y'all got, I'm hoping it's just about basketball,' the seven-year WNBA veteran said conclusively. 'Maybe a box score question? But the kid's crown is heavy. Respect that.' Reese thanked and shared a hug with Atkins after she finished her speech, and she took to X, formerly Twitter, later that night to reiterate her gratitude to the WNBA champion and two-time All-Star. 'Love my vet man,' Reese posted with teary-eyed and heart emojis on a video of Atkins' passionate moment. The Olympic gold medalist has been one of multiple current and former WNBA stars who have spoken out on the discourse around Angel Reese and the league this campaign. Seattle Storm legend Sue Bird recently called out how easily the focus in women's sports can shift away from basketball and the role the media can sometimes play in diverting the topic.
